UAE, Serbian Presidents hold talks in Abu Dhabi
The UAE and Serbia are taking their partnership to new heights following a high-level meeting in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.
UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan welcomed Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić at Qasr Al Watan, where the two leaders discussed ways to strengthen bilateral ties across key sectors.
Their talks focused on expanding cooperation in areas such as the economy, investment, renewable energy, food security and development.
They also exchanged views on regional and global issues, stressing the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, and efforts to restore peace and stability in the Middle East.
The meeting reaffirmed both nations' commitment to building sustainable economic partnerships, aligned with the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement that came into effect last month.

Sultan chairs meeting on higher education strategy
His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, chaired the second meeting of the permanent executive committee of the Sharjah Council for Higher Education and Scientific Research (SCHESR) on Tuesday morning at the University City. Sheikh Sultan welcomed the committee members and emphasised the council's role in the coming years, following his directives to correct administrative concepts, improve university governance, and implement strategic planning. The committee discussed various topics and future plans, including the council's work report, organisational structure, strategy, subcommittees, academic staff promotion and evaluation criteria, as well as research and innovation affairs. The committee also reviewed university admission conditions, the diversity of academic programmes, and main and specialised fields to ensure they meet labour market demands and students' interests. Sheikh Sultan approved the preliminary budget for the remaining period of the year, amounting to Dhs18 million, alongside endorsing the council's new logo and headquarters at the University City. He directed the committee to oversee scholarship affairs in Sharjah's higher education institutions, adopting governance frameworks and coordinating between universities and scholarship providers—governmental, semi-governmental, and private. New scholarship standards for postgraduate studies were approved, similar to those for bachelor's degrees. Sharjah students registered with the emirate and with a monthly income below Dhs50,000 will receive full scholarships, while those with higher incomes will benefit from 50% fee grants. Full scholarships will continue for groups such as children of imams and students with disabilities, funded by the Emiri Diwan. Universities and academies will offer special discounts to other categories like high achievers in academics, sports, research, and other fields. The meeting was attended by Dr Mansour Bin Nasar, Head of the Sharjah Government Legal Department and committee rapporteur; Dr. Muhadditha Al Hashemi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Private Education Authority; Professor Hamid Majoul Al Nuaimi, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah and Director of Sharjah Academy for Space Sciences and Astronomy; and Dr Mohammed Yousuf Baniyas, Adviser for Higher Education at Sharjah Private Education Authority. Separately, Sheikh Sultan issued an Emiri Decree regarding the transfer, promotion, and appointment of a Secretary-General for the SCHESR. According to the Decree, Dr Aisha Mohammed Obeid Boukhater Al Shamsi, Director of the Admissions and Registration Department at the University of Sharjah, is transferred to SCHESR, promoted to the rank of Director-General under the Special Jobs System in the Government of Sharjah, and appointed as Secretary-General of the Council. Recently, Sheikh Sultan emphasised the significant role of universities in advancing society. He highlighted the importance of the SCHESR, which was established specifically to assist universities and academies in the emirate in continuing the journey of higher education, which began in 1997 with the establishment of the University of Sharjah and the American University of Sharjah. The Council continues to provide the best sciences to its students, based on the latest educational and pedagogical curricula. Sheikh Sultan spoke about various important issues concerning universities and academic institutions. He emphasised how closely he monitors all aspects of higher education because he believes that science plays a crucial role in the lives of individuals and society as a whole. The Ruler of Sharjah pointed out that science is a double-edged sword; while it has the power to create and improve, it can also be used in harmful ways. Sheikh Sultan emphasised the importance of setting up academic institutions the right way from the very beginning. He reflected on how universities were first established in Sharjah, highlighting the need for skilled professionals to guide this process, which enables these institutions to start strong. VP hails measures taken to combat money laundering
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, has chaired a Cabinet meeting held at Qasr Al Watan in Abu Dhabi. 'The Cabinet approved during the meeting the restructuring of the Higher Committee Overseeing the National Strategy on Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism under the chairmanship of Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Over the years, the Committee has made strides in advancing national policies and strengthening measures to combat money laundering and terrorism financing across the country,' Sheikh Mohammed said. 'The Committee will continue its work to ensure the UAE remains a global leader combating money laundering and terrorism financing, an oasis of safety and security, and an ideal business environment for entrepreneurs and investors across all sectors,' he added. Sheikh Mohammed said, 'We also approved the establishment of the National Maritime Navigation Center, which will operate under the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure. Sheikh Mohammed concluded, 'We approved the 2024 Annual Report of the Higher Commission for Free Trade Negotiations.' The UAE Cabinet reviewed the 2025 Global Competitiveness Ranking results, published by the IMD World Competitiveness Center in Lausanne, Switzerland. This year, the UAE is ranked among the top five globally, scoring 96.09 out of 100 points.' The 2025 edition also introduced five new indicators: food waste, environmental performance, freely elected government, passport mobility, and media bias. This year, the UAE made significant progress in the business efficiency pillar, rising seven spots to rank third globally. It also maintained a strong standing globally in economic performance and government efficiency, ranking second and fourth, respectively. The UAE also ranked second globally in social cohesion, flexibility of residency laws, and government policy adaptability, while securing third globally in graduates in sciences, leverage of digital tools and technology, and healthcare infrastructure. The Cabinet reviewed the 2024 report of the Higher Commission for Free Trade Negotiations. The report highlighted the signing and conclusion of negotiations for 27 Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPAs) with various countries, of which eight have already come into effect. These agreements drove the UAE's foreign trade volume to an unprecedented Dhs5.23 trillion in 2024, according to the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The UAE's non-oil exports reached a historic milestone, exceeding Dhs440 billion in 2023, marking a 16.3% growth compared to 2022 and a remarkable 83% increase from 2019. The Cabinet reviewed the year 2024 achievements of the Emirates Council for Balanced Development. Highlights included the completion of major projects in Qidfa, such as the waterfront development, Palm Walk, and cycling tracks. Strategic projects were also initiated in Masfout, including Marble Park, a Ladies' Club, Friday Market, and restoration of Al Sharia and Al Falaj areas as cultural landmarks. The Council also launched the 'UAE Villages Councils' programme, creating ten integrated community councils and distinct digital branding for each village under the initiative 'Jothoor' (Roots) to empower female artisans in the UAE. Several cultural festivals and local market initiatives were organised, attracting over 206,000 visitors, supporting 171 families, and engaging 790 volunteers. The Cabinet reviewed the achievements of the fourth edition of the 'Make it in the Emirates' platform (2025). This initiative attracted over 122,000 visitors and participants, facilitated Dhs168 billion in potential procurement agreements to localise the manufacturing of 4,800 products. The Cabinet reviewed during the meeting a report on the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme, which highlighted the federal government housing decisions issued during the first half of 2025. The total number of decisions issued during that period reached 1,838, with a total value exceeding Dhs1.25 billion. UAE, Serbian Presidents discuss strengthening bilateral ties
