Former Indian coach
Ravi Shastri
criticised India's bowling performance during the second day of the final Test against England at The Oval, as England dominated the proceedings reaching 109/1 at lunch. After India managed to add only 20 runs to their overnight score before being dismissed for 224, England's opening pair of
Ben Duckett
and
Zak Crawley
put on an impressive 92-run partnership.
India's morning started poorly as they lost their remaining wickets quickly, adding just 20 runs to their total. Gus Atkinson was the standout bowler for England, claiming a five-wicket haul with figures of 5/33, while
Josh Tongue
supported well with 3/57.

The English openers then took control, scoring at nearly seven runs per over. Crawley remained unbeaten on 52 off 43 balls with 12 fours, while Ollie Pope was batting on 12. Duckett contributed a quick 43 off 38 balls, including five fours and two sixes.
Gus Atkinson press conference: On Shubman Gill run out, Chris Woakes injury and good score
"The game has moved forward and India have been blown away. They lost four wickets for 20 runs, and then England scored so quickly," Shastri said on Sky Sports. "That is alarming for India, so they will sit down and say, 'let us focus on where we want to bowl'. The batters will try different things, but India needs to stick to a line and length and build pressure at both ends, not try too many things."
Former England captain
Ricky Ponting
observed that England "could not have asked for much more."

He added, "The disappointing thing from India's point of view is how much the ball has done, and they have not been able to use that at all. We have watched England be front-foot and take the game forward over the last four or five years and they have done that perfectly today. They have scored at almost seven runs an over."

Who was the standout bowler in the first innings for England?
Gus Atkinson
Josh Tongue
Ponting further noted the Indian bowling strategy's shortcomings. "They also have not bowled enough bouncers, something we talked about in the last game [at Emirates Old Trafford].
They have not pushed the batters back and got them thinking," he said.
Earlier in the match, after England won the toss and bowled first, India struggled at 153/6. The highest partnership came between Karun Nair, who scored 57 off 109 balls with eight fours, and Washington Sundar, who made 26 off 55 balls with three fours, adding 58 runs together.
The duo's partnership proved to be the most substantial contribution to India's innings before they were eventually bowled out for 224. At lunch on Day 2, England had reached 109/1, with Crawley and Pope at the crease.

India in 'continuous dialogue' phase with IOC on 2036 bid: Sports Ministry

India's bid to host the 2036 Olympics is in the 'Continuous Dialogue' phase with the International Olympic Committee's Future Host Commission, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya told the Lok Sabha on Monday (August 11, 2025). In response to a query from Aam Aadmi Party's MP from Sangrur, Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, Mr. Mandaviya said the entire bidding process is being handled by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). "IOA has submitted a letter of intent to IOC. The bid is now in the 'Continuous Dialogue' phase with the Future Host Commission of IOC," the Minister stated in the lower house. The Minister, however, did not respond to Mr. Hayer's specific query of whether India is bidding to host the Olympics across multiple venues. Mr. Hayer asked if the proposed plan includes Hockey in Bhubaneswar, Rowing in Bhopal, Canoeing/Kayaking in Pune and Cricket in Mumbai. "Bidding to host the Olympic Games in India is the responsibility of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and allotment of hosting rights for the Olympics is done by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) through a detailed host selection process," Mr. Mandaviya stated. Although a host city has not been proposed by India officially, the Gujarat government has been at the forefront and its Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi was part of an Indian delegation that visited IOC headquarters in Lausanne to discuss the bid last month. The 'Continuous Dialogue' phase involves a feasibility assessment by the IOC of the interested party's preparedness. However, as of now, the host selection process has been "paused" by new IOC President Kirsty Coventry. Ms. Coventry, an Olympic gold-winning former swimmer who is the first woman and the first African President of the IOC, said the consensus among the members, during her maiden Executive Board meeting in June, was to reassess the process. Earlier, a decision on India's bid was expected next year. India is also facing competition from the likes of Qatar and Turkey, who are also in the 2036 race. "There was an overwhelming support from the IOC members for a pause to be done and a review of the future host election process and we will be setting up a working group to look into this," the 41-year-old Ms. Coventry had said in July. Mr. Coventry said the executive board members felt that the experience of already decided future hosts -- Los Angles (2028 Summer Games), Brisbane (2032 Summer Games), French Alps (2030 Winter Games) -- need to be studied before proceeding on future proposals. India's poor record in doping is an issue for the IOC, which has sought corrective measures by the IOA. The IOA has set up a panel to address doping in Indian sports after being rebuked by the IOC. Mandaviya addresses state of Indian football Mr. Mandaviya also faced a question on the pitiable state of Indian football. While the national men's team has been hurtling from one setback to another, domestic football is also in doldrums after the top-tier Indian Super League was placed on hold due to technical issues. Congress' Adoor Prakash, who represents the Attingal constituency in Kerala, asked whether the Government "noted the declining situation of Indian football" and that the team has slipped to the lowest FIFA ranking in the last nine years. He also sought a lowdown on the measures being undertaken to revive the sport. The Minister placed the onus on the All India Football Federation and blamed the poor rankings on the "dynamic" of the process to determine them. "Rankings of football teams are dynamic and influenced by match results, strength of opposition, and frequency of matches. "The Sports Authority of India (SAI), an autonomous body under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, regularly engages with the AIFF to review the performance and overall development of the sport and provides its advice accordingly," he stated. "At present, a total of 500 athletes are being trained in football discipline," he added.

Madras High Court orders commencement of trial

The Madras High Court on Monday (August 11, 2025) ordered the commencement of trial in a 10-year-old defamation suit filed by former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni seeking ₹100 crore in damages from Zee Media Corporation, journalist Sudhir Chaudhary, retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer G. Sampath Kumar, and News Nation Network for having dragged his name in to the IPL betting scam. Justice C.V. Karthikeyan also appointed an advocate commissioner to record the evidence of Mr. Dhoni on mutually convenient premises, to all the parties involved and their counsel, in Chennai. The advocate commissioner was appointed as Mr. Dhoni's personal appearance at the High Court, for the examination in chief as well as cross-examination by the defendants, might lead to chaos due to him being a celebrity. The orders were passed after senior counsel P.R. Raman submitted an affidavit sworn by Mr. Dhoni expressing his intent to proceed with the trial in the defamation suit pending since 2014. The cricketer said that he would be available for examination as well as cross-examination between October 20, 2025, and December 10, 2025, and that the venue and specific dates could be fixed on the basis of mutual convenience. 'The above request is made with the intent to avoid any undue delay (in disposal of the suit pending in the High Court for over a decade) and to support the fair, just, and speedy adjudication of the suit. I state that I shall extend my full co-operation with the Advocate Commissioner and comply with all directions issued by this honourable court regarding the trial and the recording of evidence,' the affidavit read. When Mr. Raman, assisted by advocate Sandesh Saravanan, requested the court to consider appointing a retired district judge as an advocate commissioner for recording evidence, Justice Karthikeyan said that he would pick a name from a list maintained by the High Court. He also stated that the defamation suit would be listed for hearing before the court after the completion of recording of evidence in full. The trial in the suit had got delayed for over 10 years because of multiple applications taken out by the parties seeking one relief or another. In December 2023, a Division Bench of Justices S.S. Sundar (since retired) and Sunder Mohan had convicted the retired IPS officer of criminal contempt of court and sentenced him to 15 days of simple imprisonment. However, the Supreme Court stayed the punishment in 2024. Mr. Dhoni had filed the contempt plea against the retired IPS officer for having made contumacious remarks against the Supreme Court as well as the High Court while defending the defamation suit. In July 2022, the then Advocate General R. Shunmugasundaram had granted permission to the cricketer to proceed with the contempt plea, after being satisfied that the remarks made by Mr. Kumar, in his written statement to the suit, amounted to scandalising court proceedings.
