Highland Park celebrates July 4 with return of a remembrance ceremony and parade

Chicago Tribune5 days ago
This year's July 4 events in Highland Park included the return of a morning indoor remembrance ceremony, held this time at The Moraine, and the 11 a.m. parade on the same route as last year's parade.
The parade's newer route takes an alternate route to Central Avenue and diverts from the Port Clinton Square block, where seven people were killed and many were injured at the parade on July 4, 2022.
The deceased victims are Katie Goldstein of Highland Park, Irina McCarthy of Highland Park, Kevin Michael McCarthy of Highland Park, Stephen Straus of Highland Park, Jacki Lovi Sundheim of Highland Park, Nicolás Toledo of Morelos, Mexico and Eduardo Uvaldo of Waukegan.
Bobby Crimo of Highwood was convicted of the crimes this past spring.
The 2025 parade stepped off on Laurel Avenue and First Street and included 37 parade entries. The parade concluded at Sunset Woods Park after about an hour, under cloudy to sunny skies and a mid-70-degree range of weather.
The City of Highland Park and the Park District of Highland Park presented the community-focused parade with a theme of the 'Dream Team.'
'What a great morning celebrating Highland Park's team spirit,' said Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering.
'We are so fortunate to live in a community that is exceptionally engaged and supportive.'
Lake County State's Attorney Eric Rinehart also walked the parade route with elected officials.
'Let's all be safe,' Rinehart said to people on Independence Day.
Rinehart encouraged all to, 'think about those that have been impacted by the parade three years ago.
'Hope everyone has a great, safe, and meaningful day,' Rinehart added.

CNN, MSNBC skip on-air coverage of July 4 armed attack on ICE agents at Texas facility

Americans who rely on watching CNN or MSNBC for information would be in the dark about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents being ambushed at the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, on Independence Day. A heavily armed group lured two unarmed ICE agents into a parking lot on the evening of July 4 by firing a barrage of fireworks at their door and spray-painting graffiti on their personal cars with the words "traitor" and "Ice Pig," which agents could see from the cameras inside. At around the same time, a police officer responded to their 911 call for two men firing rounds from a nearby tree line, and an officer was hit in the neck, which forced the agents to take cover. Police also found seven suspects in black military fatigues wandering in a field 300 yards away, some of whom were covered in mud from trying to escape on foot. They also had weapons, vests and radios. But CNN and MSNBC didn't devote any airtime to the incident, Mediaite was first to report. "Should that not strike you as unusual, imagine this scenario: 11 members of a right-wing militia group open fire on an FBI field office on a major holiday, and a responding police officer is shot in the neck," Isaac Schorr wrote for Mediaite. The city of "Alvarado" and the term "Prairieland Detention Center" weren't mentioned on CNN or MSNBC between July 4-10, according to a search of transcripts using Grabien Media. CNN and MSNBC did not comment on the record when asked why the attack on ICE agents was ignored on air. July 4 was marked by two other major developments; the devastating flash floods in central Texas and President Donald Trump signing the "big, beautiful bill" into law. The tragedy in Texas and fallout from the catastrophic flooding has dominated the news cycle for the past week. However, the outlets have covered numerous other topics in addition to the floods over the past week, such as the Department of Justice's memo on Jeffrey Epstein, the Trump administration's tariff and immigration policies, and the criminal investigations into former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey. While the networks ignored the attack on-air, CNN did cover it online. A July 7 criminal complaint filed by the U.S. District Court Northern District of Texas alleges that assailants shot 20 to 30 rounds from an AR-15-style rifle before it jammed, causing it to malfunction. Court records alleged extensive planning went into the attack on ICE agents, as well as the discovery of anti-government literature in an apartment tied to a suspect, including literature entitled "Organising for Attack! Insurrectionary Anarchy." Twelve individuals have been charged for their roles in the attack. Acting U.S. Attorney Nancy E. Larson said the attack was not a "peaceful protest." "This was an ambush on federal and local law enforcement officers. This increasing trend of violence against law enforcement will not be tolerated in the Northern District of Texas. Those who use violence against law enforcement officers will be found and prosecuted using the toughest criminal statutes and penalties available," Larson said in a statement. The Alvarado police officer who was shot in the neck outside the ICE facility during the attack is expected to survive.

Immigration raids at Anaheim car washes prompts a family's fight for their father

Gilberto Gomez-Garcia's family begged him not to report to the Anaheim Car Wash for work on the eve of Independence Day. Scenes of car washes being raided by federal immigration agents across Southern California had instilled fear that the family's patriarch, an undocumented immigrant from Colima, Mexico, would not be safe. Gomez-Garcia's family made preparations beforehand and rehearsed what he should do in the event of a raid. They cautioned him not to answer any questions from Immigration and Customs Enforcement or any other federal agent. Gomez-Garcia, an Anaheim father of three, insisted that he would be able to outrun any raid. All the while, President Donald Trump's federal immigration crackdown continued at area swap meets, outside of Home Depot stores and at public parks. 'My father mentioned that he had a dream the night before that ICE took him,' said Andrea Gomez, his daughter. 'That dream, unfortunately, turned into a real-life nightmare.' Gomez-Garcia headed to work on July 3 at around 9:30 a.m., a routine he kept for more than 20 years. Less than an hour into his shift, federal immigration agents raided the car wash and apprehended at least three people. Cellphone video from a bystander captured a federal agent arresting Gomez-Garcia at his workplace. Placed in an unmarked car, Garcia-Gomez suffered an injury when a bystander hurled an object and shattered the tinted window next to his passenger seat. Federal agents eventually took him to a hospital to treat the resulting eye injury. That same day, U.S. Border Patrol agents had raided Euclid Hand Car Wash in Anaheim, which shut the business down for the rest of the long Fourth of July weekend. According to Anaheim officials, agents with Border Patrol, ICE and Homeland Security Investigations carried out another enforcement action at Euclid Hand Car Wash on Wednesday that led to the arrest of two people. Spokespersons for U.S. Customs and Border Protections and ICE did not respond to TimesOC requests for comment by press deadline. Word of the latest raid spread to 'carwasheros' in the city, who feared they could be next, and signaled how such businesses have been repeatedly targeted since immigration raids ramped up in June. 'Car washes are easy access,' said Flor Melendrez, executive director of the CLEAN Car Wash Worker Center. 'They're out in the open. It is hard to tell what is and what isn't private property. That is a major reason why car washes have been so impacted by these raids.' Melendrez said that car wash raids are also quick work for federal immigration agents, with enforcement actions typically lasting just five to 10 minutes. CLEAN has compiled a list of at least 56 car wash businesses raided throughout Southern California through Wednesday. With Euclid Hand Car Wash's most recent raid added, masked federal agents have arrested approximately 112 workers, according to the group's tally. Some car wash businesses have been raided more than four times in recent weeks. 'This isn't about public safety,' said Anaheim Councilmember Carlos Leon. 'Folks are being targeted at their jobs where they are working hard to provide for their families. It's something that, unfortunately, we've seen happen in the city. But the raids aren't helping anybody in the community feel safer.' Gomez-Garcia, according to his daughter, received a call about a car wash raid in Anaheim a few minutes before his own arrest, but he decided to keep working. Andrea spoke to her father the day after his arrest. Immigration authorities held him at an ICE detention facility in downtown Los Angeles. Since Garcia-Gomez has diabetes, high blood pressure and suffers from seizures, ICE allowed his family to drop off prescription medications, protein shakes and a warm jacket. Through the holiday weekend, Andrea organized a GoFundMe page that has collected more than $18,000 in donations. The Gomez family also held a car wash on June 6 to raise additional funds. While the Gomez family has received a lot of support from the community, others took the fundraising car wash as an opportunity to yell, 'You don't belong here' and 'Go back to Mexico.' The hateful comments disappointed Andrea, but won't deter the family from rallying around Gomez-Garcia. On Monday, Andrea visited her father at the ICE detention facility. She said he still wore the same blue shirt he was wearing when federal agents took him into custody. She reported that his eye looked swollen from the injury. 'We only had about five minutes to talk to him,' she said. 'We told him everything that our family has been doing for him, what our community was doing for him, and that he isn't alone.' Family members advised him not to sign any self-deportation papers. Gomez-Garcia responded by saying he felt like a slave in detention. Since then, Gomez-Garcia has been transferred to the Adelanto ICE Detention Center, where he reports better conditions. His family recently met with an attorney. 'We want to fight his case because he's no criminal,' she said. 'He's a really hard-working man who came here to give us a better life.'

NYC woman haunted by horrifying July 4th rape on Coney Island — where she says bystanders laughed and filmed ‘like it was a movie'

A Brooklyn woman said she was raped by a stranger while boozing it up on Coney Island on the Fourth of July — while bystanders laughed and shot video 'like it was a movie.' Melissa Harris, 25, told The Post she was at the Brooklyn beach to meet a pal who never showed up — so she stayed to celebrate the holiday with a group of strangers into the early morning. That's when things took a horrible turn, Harris said. 4 Brooklyn woman Melissa Harris says she was raped on Coney Island while attending a July 4th celebration last week. Paul Martinka 'All of a sudden, this dude came out of nowhere,' she said Thursday. 'I kept looking at him. Is he drunk? I don't know. It was a lot on my mind when that person was approaching me because he was a complete and total stranger. 'He was holding on to me. Every time I pushed him off, he grabbed me harder,' Harris said. 'He grabbed me harder. He had strength.' She said she fell onto a mat on the ground and he jumped on her, sexually assaulting her while she screamed for help. 'There were people around,' Harris recalled. 'I started hearing people laughing. They sat across and watched like it was a movie.' At one point during her ordeal, the light from a golf cart — presumably driven by beach security — shone on the group during the attack, but simply drove off and left her behind, she said. 4 Harris claims bystanders laughed and filmed her 'like a movie' during the horrifying assault. Paul Martinka 4 A screenshot from a video of people standing around a bonfire during the alleged rape. Melasia Harris But the nightmare didn't end there. Harris said after she broke free the creep followed her, threw her into a nearby fence and raped her, all while she called for help. 'People were there,' she said. 'He had my face in the sand. He had my face in the bushes. I was screaming.' Bizarrely, she said her attacker then followed her to the West 8th subway station and sat next to her, 'like we were a couple.' When she was finally able to break away from the man, she ran home and said she was later taken to the hospital by ambulance, where a rape kit was done. According to police, a rape was reported at the southeast corner of Boardwalk West and Stillwell Avenue around 3 a.m. on Saturday — the same time Harris said the attack occurred. The attacker was described as a man in his 20s, who remains on the loose, according to an NYPD spokesperson. For Harris, it was a horrific turn in what started out as a 'super good night' when she arrived at the beach around 11 p.m. on Independence Day — even though she missed the fireworks. 4 The alleged attacker followed Harris to the subway when she finally escaped and left for home. Paul Martinka Now, she remains haunted by the vicious assault — and was back at the hospital Thursday after suffering a panic attack. 'I'm not having a good time,' Harris said. 'Every day I wake up at 6 a.m. on the dot. I have panic attacks. 'I feel crazy every single day, like I'm still there,' she added. She said she's sharing the story in the hopes it will help police nab the brute.
