Ilya Sutskever to lead Safe Superintelligence after Meta poaches CEO Gross in AI talent war
Gross has joined Meta Platforms to lead its AI products division, sources told Reuters.
The development comes as tech giants such as Meta Platforms aggressively chase high-profile acquisitions and offer multi-million-dollar pay packages to attract top talent in the race to lead the next wave of artificial intelligence.
Meta had also attempted to recruit Sutskever and acquire SSI, which was most recently valued at $32 billion, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.
"You might have heard rumors of companies looking to acquire us. We are flattered by their attention but are focused on seeing our work through," Sutskever said in a post on X. SSI raised $1 billion in cash last year to build advanced AI systems designed to safely exceed human intelligence.
Sutskever has previously served as OpenAI's chief scientist. He left the ChatGPT maker, which he co-founded, after his involvement in Sam Altman's dramatic firing and rehiring in November 2023.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has launched a new division, Meta Superintelligence Labs, to unify the company's AI efforts, following setbacks with its Llama 4 model and key staff departures.
The unit will be led by former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and ex-GitHub chief Nat Friedman, after Meta invested $14.3 billion in Scale and ramped up efforts to recruit top AI talent.
Gross and Friedman are known to be close, having co-founded the venture capital firm NFDG — named after their initials. The firm has backed high-profile startups including Safe Superintelligence, Perplexity and Figma.
Apple acquired Gross's startup, Cue, in 2013 for its predictive search and AI technology, after which Gross joined the iPhone maker as a director, overseeing machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Foxconn second quarter revenue rises 15.82% on year
Taiwan's Foxconn , the world's largest contract electronics maker, reported record second-quarter revenue on strong demand for artificial intelligence products but cautioned about geopolitical and exchange rate headwinds. Revenue for Apple 's biggest iPhone assembler jumped 15.82% year-on-year to T$1.797 trillion, Foxconn said in a statement on Saturday, beating the T$1.7896 trillion LSEG SmartEstimate, which gives greater weight to forecasts from analysts who are more consistently accurate. Robust AI demand led to strong revenue growth for its cloud and networking products division, said Foxconn, whose customers include AI chip firm Nvidia. Smart consumer electronics, which includes iPhones, posted 'flattish' year-on-year revenue growth affected by exchange rates, it said. June revenue roses 10.09% on year to T$540.237 billion, a record high for that month. Foxconn said it anticipates growth in this quarter from the previous three months and from the same period last year but cautioned about potential risks to growth. "The impact of evolving global political and economic conditions and exchange rate changes will need continued close monitoring," it said without elaborating. U.S. President Donald Trump said he had signed letters to 12 countries outlining the various tariff levels they would face on goods they export to the United States, with the "take it or leave it" offers to be sent out on Monday. The Chinese city of Zhengzhou is home to the world's largest iPhone manufacturing facility, operated by Foxconn. The company, formally called Hon Hai Precision Industry, does not provide numerical forecasts. It will report full second quarter earnings on August 14. Foxconn's shares jumped 76% last year, far outperforming the 28.5% rise for the Taiwan market, but are down 12.5% so far this year, reflecting broader pressure on tech stocks rattled by Trump's tumultuous trade policy. The stock closed down 1.83% on Friday ahead of the revenue data release, compared with a 0.73% drop for the benchmark index.

iPhone 17 Pro Max to feature the biggest battery ever? Fresh leak hints at major upgrades
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is without a doubt the most awaited smartphone right now. While several smartphone brands are leaning towards slimmer phones, Apple seems to be going the opposite way. A user named Instant Digital on the Chinese microblogging site Weibo has revealed some details about Apple's upcoming flagship device. Based on the latest leak, the iPhone 17 Pro Max could sport a 5,000mAh battery, which is bigger than the one on the iPhone 16 Pro Max, making it the biggest ever battery on an iPhone. This means Apple could opt for a bulky design for its top-of-the-line phone, prioritising what the users want the most – extended battery life. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is likely to have a thickness of 8.725 mm, up from 8.25 mm on the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Although the size difference may seem minute, the increased thickness might allow Apple to pack in a much bigger battery. Reportedly, the new device will also offer battery life of up to 35 hours. This can also be attributed to the A19 Pro chip's efficiency gains, which means that the iPhone 17 Pro could last longer than the current Pro Max model. The iPhone 17 Pro is anticipated to have the same size as its predecessors, which means the upcoming phone may have the same battery capacity as the current gen model. Moreover, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are likely to have 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch OLED panels, which is the same size as their predecessors. Regarding the Pro models, Apple may be considering switching from titanium to aluminium in order to increase durability. According to reports, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max would include a horizontally aligned camera island that spans the width of the phone. It is anticipated that other models in the series will also adopt the redesigned camera island.
