Rishabh Pant must save risky shots for IPL, Test cricket needs discipline: Engineer

India Today20-07-2025
Former wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer has advised Rishabh Pant to save his risky shots for the IPL (Indian Premier League) and bat in a disciplined manner in Tests. Pant has been in marvellous form in the ongoing Test series against England, being the second-highest run scorer of the series so far.The southpaw has left England bowlers frustrated with his audacious strokeplay as he's not been afraid to charge down the track against the seamers. Pant's bravado has left everyone on the edge of their seats as he's redefined batting in the longest format.advertisementHowever, Farokh Engineer feels that the India star should be showing a lot more discipline at the crease and save his big shots for the IPL.
'Absolutely. Save those (risky shots) for IPL. Test cricket demands discipline. From a number three or four, you expect them to play proper cricket, get big scores, and build innings. Rishabh has scored centuries in both innings of a Test, which is remarkable. So yes, he could play purely as a batsman, especially with England's strong bowling lineup, now including Jofra Archer and Atkinson,' Engineer told RevSportz.Furthermore, Engineer said that Pant can also play as a pure batter in the fourth Test in Manchester and needs to be more responsible in crucial moments.'For the runs he's scored, yes, he can play as a pure batter. But Rishabh is unpredictable. Whatever comes to his mind, he does it. I joked with him about his shot selection, and he just laughed—said he does what feels right in the moment. He has the confidence and has gotten away with it often. But he needs to be more responsible in crucial moments, like right before lunch or at the end of a day's play. Still, he's immensely talented. He invents his own shots, and thankfully, helmets allow that now. In our time, we wouldn't have had any teeth left,' he added.Pant injured his finger while wicketkeeping on Day 1 of the third Test and didn't don the gloves for the rest of the match, with Dhruv Jurel filling in his place behind the stumps as a substitute wicketkeeper. Hence, Pant's participation in the fourth Test remains in doubt.India's assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate has hinted at playing Pant as a pure batter, given his prolific form and the importance of the fourth Test. Trailing by 1-2 in the five-match series, India might be tempted to play Pant at any cost with the series on the line.- EndsMust Watch

IPL player trade and transfer: Full list of biggest deals in Indian Premier League history

The Indian Premier League (IPL) player trade deals and transfers have always spurred interest and curiosity, for the logic and reasoning behind certain player movements from franchises may not always find sound backing from the team's fan base. Throughout the course of the last 16 years, the IPL has seen several player trades and transfers as part of player-to-player swap deals that has impacted the involved franchises heavily the following season. Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson has now dominated the trade talks post the IPL 2025 season. The Indian Express had reported that it has been learnt that the India wicketkeeper-batter has indeed expressed his interest to the Royals to leave the franchise before the 2026 edition. Samson's potential move could indeed further shake up the IPL trade dynamics and rank among the biggest trades in IPL history, involving an Indian player alongside Hardik Pandya's stunning homecoming in 2024 from the Gujarat Titans to Mumbai Indians in a Rs 15 crore deal. Former India cricketers Zaheer Khan, Robin Uthappa, Ashish Nehra and Shikhar Dhawan were involved in the first major IPL trade deals in 2009. Zaheer and Uthappa were involved in a swap deal between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Mumbai Indians, with the latter moving to the RCB camp. Meanwhile, Dhawan moved from MI to Delhi Daredevils in exchange for Nehra's services. Samson's rumoured move has been watched with interest by the Chennai Super Kings, although at least one more team would be interested in initiating such a move.

Ravichandran Ashwin wants to part ways with CSK, informs franchise about his decision: Report

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who was bought by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the mega auction before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, has decided to part ways with the five-time champions. The 38-year-old endured a torrid time in this year's edition of the tournament, taking just seven wickets in nine matches. The off-spinner was picked up by CSK for INR 9.75 crore in the mega auction; however, he failed to live up to the billing. Ravichandran Ashwin decides to part ways with CSK. (REUTERS) According to a report in Cricbuzz, Ashwin has decided to part ways with CSK and has already informed the franchise about his decision. However, the reason behind Ashwin's decision is not known at the moment. The veteran spinner is also likely to give up his role as the Director of Operations at the CSK Academy. He has held this position for the past year. If Ashwin decides to join another franchise, continuing in the CSK role could present a conflict of interest situation. According to Cricbuzz, Ashwin is keen to avoid such a situation and hence, he has decided to leave the role. It remains to be seen whether Ashwin is traded to another franchise or whether he enters the pool for the mini auction, set to take place later this year. In the 2025 season, Ashwin failed to set the stage on fire, and his underwhelming returns with the ball were one of the major reasons the management benched him for a few games. The seasoned off-spinner was utilised in the powerplay, but Ashwin leaked runs, letting the opposition off the hook. After the season came to an end, even Ashwin admitted to not having an ideal season, stating the need for getting better inside the powerplay. He called time on his career after the third Test against Australia as he finished as the second-highest wicket-taker for India across all three formats of the game. MS Dhoni, Ruturaj Gaikwad meet in Chennai On Thursday, top CSK officials, along with skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and MS Dhoni, held a meeting. All the concerned individuals have been meeting in Chennai over the past few days to discuss the upcoming IPL season and the strategy going ahead. Ashwin made his long-awaited return to CSK in the IPL 2025 season after spending nine editions with different teams. Between 2016 and 2024, Ashwin represented teams like Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals. Ashwin started off his IPL journey with CSK, spending his first six seasons with the MS Dhoni-led side. Earlier, it was reported that Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson had also requested the franchise to release him ahead of the 2026 edition of the tournament.

"Brisbane Win Bigger For India Than Oval": Ex-Selector Saba Karim Makes Big Remark

Team India's English summer was nothing short of magical. A young team that was not expected to do wonders in the absence of some of the greats of Test cricket excelled, squaring the series. But this certainly isn't the first time a young Indian team has risen on a grand stage. It happened in Brisbane too in 2021. Saba Karim, formert India international and a commentator, now pins down to Brisbane as the greatest moment still. When the wicket of Gus Atkinson fell on the final day of the Oval test, it was joy and celebrations for the Men in Blue. This, a young India team, underwent rapid transformation. Few had experienced the joy of Brisbane like they had in Oval. Experts like Saba Karim, who was behind the microphone in both series, pins down Brisbane as a moment of biggest achievement for Team India than Oval. He tells NDTV's Tea Toast and Sports podcast, 'Brisbane was bigger. It had never ever happened before in Australia and that also with a very young side, with most of the regulars injured on the sidelines. For India to script that kind of a win was unbelievable. And generally, I think that's how you see a growth of a side- when you're able to do well and win matches, even when one or two of your regular players are not available." "Even in this Test match, for that matter, we didn't have Jasprit Bumrah, we didn't have Rishabh Pant, still we went out and won the last Test match.' Saba adds, 'If you draw comparisons, let me talk about the Australia draw first. Australian draw was more difficult because the conditions were more variable and then you're against a top quality bowling attack. It was so good to see the batting display, that kind of zeal, that kind of rear guard action. England was different because one had to battle for a longer duration of time to script a draw and I think.' A five test series leaves battered bodies, tired souls, brings out big heroes. Like every good drama has villains too. The 2-2 series scoreline is a lot closer than what it really looks like. India won 33 of the 73 sessions, the top order delivered tons of runs. However Saba Karim says on NDTV's Tea Toast and Sports that more could have been achieved, 'In the end, I am sure that there is a strong feeling in the Indian side that they could have won the Test series. Because the number of sessions India won in the entire series is higher than what England could achieve. What England was able to do is that win those important or those critical sessions. And I think the turnaround from England's perspective was more than the Indian side. And I think that is why we were able to draw the series.' Despite letting go of critical moments, this has turned out to be one of the most bingable series and fans will continue to reach out for the footage for all the excitement, action and drama.
