Rookie Troy Melton allows 1 hit as Tigers beat White Sox 1-0 to win series
It was a series-clinching win for the Tigers, who advanced to 70-52 and extended a narrow lead over the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central.
The Tigers are just 11-14 since the All-Star Break, while the division-rival Guardians are 16-7 in that stretch.
Melton (3-1, 2.82 ERA) threw 56 pitches over five innings. The 24-year-old struck out six batters.
Luis Robert Jr. hit a leadoff double in the fifth inning, but Melton responded with three consecutive swinging strikeouts to end his day. Since giving up six earned runs to the Pittsburgh Pirates in his July 23 debut, Melton has been responsible for just one run in four appearances.
Tigers relievers Sawyer Gipson-Long, Kyle Finnegan and Will Vest combined to allow one hit over the final four innings. Vest picked up his 18th save of the season.
Wenceel Pérez hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the sixth inning off Martín Pérez (1-2, 3.09), who surrendered three hits and two walks over 3 1/3 innings.
Chicago starter Shane Smith held Detroit to two hits in five innings and threw five strikeouts.

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Astros All-Star closer Josh Hader said he hopes to pitch again in 2025, even if it means in the postseason, after being shut down because of a left shoulder issue. Hader will not throw for three weeks after being diagnosed with a left capsule shoulder strain on Friday. He will fill that time with rest and strengthening exercises and be re-evaluated to see if he can resume a throwing program. 'We'll see how my body recovers and how it's taking on rehab,' Hader said. 'Right now for me, I'm trying to get as strong as I can for these next three weeks and see where I go from there.' Hader said he would need a ramp-up period of about three weeks in order to pitch in games, which would likely rule him out the remainder of the regular. But, the six-time All-Star hopes to return in the postseason for the Astros, who entered Saturday leading the American League West by a half-game over Seattle. 'Obviously, I would love to be part of a playoff push, but realistically, I'm thinking about longevity,' Hader said. 'If I can get these three weeks, get healthy and start moving into a direction where I can start throwing, yeah I would be definitely optimistic.' Hader was placed on the injured list for the first time in his nine-year career on Monday after he felt something in his shoulder he hadn't felt before while throwing in training. 'That's when I kind of threw up the caution signs and wanted to kind of look in deeper and kind of see what was really going on,' Hader said. In his second year with the Astros, Hader is 6-2 with a 2.05 ERA and is fifth with 28 saves in 48 appearances this season. Patriots beat Vikings 20-12 as rookies Henderson and Chism each record another preseason TD
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — New England rookies TreVeyon Henderson and Efton Chism III each had another preseason touchdown, and the Patriots beat the Minnesota Vikings 20-12 on Saturday. Henderson, the second-round draft pick from national champion Ohio State who's been turning heads in training camp and tracking toward a prominent role in the backfield, rushed for 20 yards with an 8-yard score on four carries during a two-drive stint for the first-team offense. Henderson had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown last week. The Patriots held a handful of projected starters out, including four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who's returning from a torn ACL in his right knee suffered halfway through his lone season with the Houston Texans. Second-year quarterback Drake Maye started against an all-backups Vikings defense and went 4 for 7 for 46 yards with a delay-of-game penalty and an overthrow that was nearly intercepted but dropped by Tavierre Thomas. Chism made another compelling case for a regular-season roster spot with six receptions from backup QB Joshua Dobbs for 71 yards and a score. He caught a short throw on third-and-9 from the 12 and broke six tackle attempts as he twisted and muscled his way into the end zone. With Diggs, DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte and veterans Kendrick Bourne and Mack Hollins on the Patriots' roster, there might be only one opening for a wide receiver. Chism, who was undrafted out of Eastern Washington, will certainly get a long look. He had a 12-yard touchdown catch last week. Vikings play it safe The two teams had two days of joint practices this week, providing plenty of valuable tests for players in situational drills in a controlled setting, and Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell was more than satisfied with the work. Not a single projected starter on either side of the ball suited up for Minnesota, and several key backups who are locks to make the team were given the afternoon off, too. New quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who led one 12-play drive last week, wore an earpiece on the sideline while Sam Howell started.
