What Is An E-CVT And How Is It Different From A CVT?

Yahoo5 days ago
The term "CVT", short for Continuously Variable Transmission, already confuses plenty of drivers, so naturally, automakers had to go and add a new twist. Enter the e-CVT or electronic-Continuously Variable Transmission. You've seen it in hybrid specs and maybe even heard it buzzing away under the hood of a Toyota Prius or a Honda Accord Hybrid. But here's the catch: it's not really a CVT in the traditional sense at all.
A conventional CVT, uses belts or pulleys to offer an infinite number of gear ratios between low and high. The idea is smooth, efficient power delivery without any hard shifts. You rev up, and the car just, well, goes. No gear hunting, no shift shock, just a seamless ride. There are plenty of cars making use of it, and even some you may not know came with a CVT. An e-CVT, though, doesn't have pulleys or belts at all. It's an entirely different beast that lives mostly in hybrids, and instead of shifting physical gears with hardware, it blends the output of electric motors and a gas engine through software and planetary gears. Sounds fake? It isn't. But it's definitely different.

The biggest difference between a traditional CVT and an e-CVT is how they go about their job. Regular CVTs mechanically change the gear ratio using pulleys that expand and contract with a belt running between them. That's how they keep the engine in its ideal power band, balanced for fuel efficiency and smooth acceleration. Think of it like a very smart, infinitely variable bicycle gear.
e-CVTs don't do any of that. Instead, they use a planetary gearset paired with two electric motors and an internal combustion engine. The system constantly analyses speed, driver input, engine power to select an optimal gear ratio for the conditions. The result is a setup with no belts or chains, thus greatly improving durability and reliability while being lightweight, although the system does require additional cooling. In Toyota's hybrid systems, for example, the internal combustion engine and electric motor work through a Power Split Device that determines where the power goes and when. It's Toyota's version of the e-CVT.
If the e-CVT isn't even a CVT in the traditional sense, why does it act like one? The answer comes down to driving feel. Both deliver seamless acceleration and keep the engine at an optimal rev range to either improve efficiency or more power under load. To the average driver, it still feels like a CVT because that dreaded rubber band effect is still there since there are no traditional shift points of a conventional gearbox. So the revs may sound disconnected from road speed.
But here's the kicker; because e-CVTs rely on electric motors and computer control, they're often more responsive than pulley-based CVTs. They're more fuel efficient, quicker accelerating, and better at mimicking the feel of a conventional transmission when they need to, with the possibility of built-in sequential shifting function. So the next time you hear someone dismiss an e-CVT as just another buzzkill transmission, you'll know better. It's not just a CVT, it's a whole different drivetrain game.

xAI explains the Grok Nazi meltdown as Tesla puts Elon's bot in its cars

Several days after temporarily shutting down the Grok AI bot that was producing antisemitic posts and praising Hitler in response to user prompts, Elon Musk's AI company tried to explain why that happened. In a series of posts on X, it said that '...we discovered the root cause was an update to a code path upstream of the @grok bot. This is independent of the underlying language model that powers @grok.' On the same day, Tesla announced a new 2025.26 update rolling out 'shortly' to its electric cars, which adds the Grok assistant to vehicles equipped with AMD-powered infotainment systems, which have been available since mid-2021. According to Tesla, 'Grok is currently in Beta & does not issue commands to your car – existing voice commands remain unchanged.' As Electrek notes, this should mean that whenever the update does reach customer-owned Teslas, it won't be much different than using the bot as an app on a connected phone. This isn't the first time the Grok bot has had these kinds of problems or similarly explained them. In February, it blamed a change made by an unnamed ex-OpenAI employee for the bot disregarding sources that accused Elon Musk or Donald Trump of spreading misinformation. Then, in May, it began inserting allegations of white genocide in South Africa into posts about almost any topic. The company again blamed an 'unauthorized modification,' and said it would start publishing Grok's system prompts publicly. xAI claims that a change on Monday, July 7th, 'triggered an unintended action' that added an older series of instructions to its system prompts telling it to be 'maximally based,' and 'not afraid to offend people who are politically correct.' The prompts are separate from the ones we noted were added to the bot a day earlier, and both sets are different from the ones the company says are currently in operation for the new Grok 4 assistant. These are the prompts specifically cited as connected to the problems: 'You tell it like it is and you are not afraid to offend people who are politically correct.' * Understand the tone, context and language of the post. Reflect that in your response.' * 'Reply to the post just like a human, keep it engaging, dont repeat the information which is already present in the original post.' The xAI explanation says those lines caused the Grok AI bot to break from other instructions that are supposed to prevent these types of responses, and instead produce 'unethical or controversial opinions to engage the user,' as well as 'reinforce any previously user-triggered leanings, including any hate speech in the same X thread,' and prioritize sticking to earlier posts from the thread.

Long Dormant Bitcoin Wallets Wake Up For The First Time In 14 Years, Move $8.6B In Bitcoin : What's Going On?

A series of massive Bitcoin transfers has shaken the cryptocurrency industry, leaving a trail of questions and wild theories. Last week, several cryptocurrency trackers flagged the transfer of a staggering 80,000 BTC worth $8.6 billion in eight different transactions of 10,000 BTC from a single entity. These transactions are particularly interesting because it is the first time these assets have been moved in over a decade. Don't Miss: Warren Buffett once said, "If you don't find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die." Here's , starting today. $100k+ in investable assets? – no cost, no obligation. According to cryptocurrency intelligence platform Arkham, these assets were last moved between April 2, 2011 and May 4, 2011. At the time, the asset was trading for less than $1. 'In 8 years of analyzing Bitcoin, I've never seen anything like this,' CryptoQuant analyst J.A. Maartun said, commenting on the move. What's going on? The answer depends on who you ask. According to Arkham, the transactions are likely just an address upgrade from the legacy Bitcoin address standard. The platform maintained that there was no indication that the entity was selling the asset despite sitting on an eye-popping 10.8 million percent profit. On the other hand, Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN) Head of Product Business Operations Conor Grogan has raised a more sinister possibility. 'There is a small possibility that the $8B in BTC that recently woke up were hacked or compromised private keys,' he said. Trending: The secret weapon in billionaire investor portfolios that you almost certainly don't own yet. Grogan said the wallet owner appeared to initially test their wallet keys with a Bitcoin Cash test transaction before the Bitcoin transfers. He questioned why the entity had not also cleared their Bitcoin Cash wallets. 'Why wouldn't they also sweep these?' he said. 'This is all extreme speculation, but the movements are extremely odd here.' He highlighted that if it proved to be a hack, it 'would be by far the largest heist in human history.' Meanwhile, Ark Invest CEO Cathie Wood has speculated whether the transactions could be part of 'a government settlement deal,' citing the lack of an extended market reaction. 'The Bitcoin market stabilized fairly quickly, so could this block be part of a government settlement deal?' she said. 'Is it now part of a government Treasury?'In line with this theory, some have speculated that the transfers could be linked to early cryptocurrency investor Roger Ver, also known as Bitcoin Jesus. Ver has been fighting extradition to the U.S. after being charged with tax evasion and fraud. However, there is no evidence of any link to the Bitcoin millionaire. Chiming in, 10x Research suggested that the move was likely part of a broader trend of older Bitcoin whales offloading their holdings into the Trump administration-led market rally. The research outfit said this trend was the main reason the asset's rally has stalled. Meanwhile, the entity in question's Bitcoin wealth likely extends far beyond the recently moved 80,000 BTC. Grogan said that at one point in 2011, they had a single wallet that held 200,000 BTC, among the top five holdings of any wallet in history. According to Maartun, the entity still has over 120,000 BTC untouched. Despite the speculation, Bitcoin continues to hold steady at $108,000. Bitcoin Sets All-Time High At $118,909, Ethereum, XRP Surge 8% Each

Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) has surged to a new all-time high of $118,909 on Coinbase on Friday morning propelled by steady institutional buying, but analysts warn the rally could face pressure from geopolitical and inflation-driven uncertainties in the weeks ahead. What Happened: The world's largest cryptocurrency jumped 6.3% in the last 24 hours, breaking out of the sideways trading pattern that has persisted for much of the past two months. Stephen Wundke, Director of Strategy and Revenue at Algoz, pointed to the continued inflows into U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs, amounting to $15 billion in net buying over the past two months, as a critical driver of upward momentum. Trending: Tired of Grid Failures and Charging Deserts? This Startup Has a Solar Fix and $25M+ in Sales — "Institutions have kept buying BTC ETFs," Wundke told Benzinga. "Traders who lack exposure are now trying to recover positions, forcing prices higher." He added that dovish inflation signals globally and renewed corporate interest in adding Bitcoin to treasury holdings are fostering favorable conditions for further upside. "History shows us when BTC breaks new highs and holds, there's been a circa 20% uplift in the next 60 days," he noted, predicting a short-term target of $125,000—provided inflation data from the U.S. remains benign. Ajay Dhingra, Head of Research and Partnerships at Unizen, was more cautious. "Bitcoin's new all-time high comes during a rare moment of calm in global politics and trade," he Dhingra warned that upcoming macro data releases—particularly GDP and inflation figures—may reflect the impact of Middle East tensions and impending tariffs, potentially reigniting market volatility. "This rally may not hold if that calm gives way to fresh volatility," he added. The broader crypto market followed Bitcoin's lead. Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) rose over 8% to top $3,000, while XRP (CRYPTO: XRP) gained 8% as well to surpass $2.60. Market sentiment also received a lift from optimism around likely ETF approvals for altcoins like Solana (CRYPTO: SOL) and Ripple, both of which broke key trendlines in recent trading sessions. What's Next: While enthusiasm is growing, experts caution that the sustainability of this rally hinges on upcoming macroeconomic events, particularly the U.S. inflation report due July 15 and the Bitcoin options expiry on July 25, two potential catalysts that could sway short-term market direction.
