Kolhapur: As many as 34 former corporators, including past mayors and deputy mayors, have pledged their support for Congress MLC Satej Patil's leadership, signaling their readiness for the upcoming
Kolhapur Municipal Corporation elections
.
The group met with Patil on Saturday evening, in what appeared to be a show of strength and unity within the Congress fold.However, not all of Patil's close allies were present. Notably absent was Sharangdar Deshmukh, a longtime confidant of Patil.
Sources say Deshmukh is currently in contact with
Shiv Sena leaders
and is being considered for a key role in contesting the
civic polls
on behalf of the Mahayuti alliance.Despite the absences, Congress politicians expressed confidence in their position.
"Many ex-corporators from other parties dialled us and told us that they are with the Congress party and our leader. There are attempts at poaching because Congress is strong in Kolhapur city, and the opposition will try to break us apart, which will not happen," said Sachin Chavan, city president of Congress.Chavan added that Patil encouraged the former corporators to begin preparations for the civic body elections and to "contest with a positive mind.
"Speaking on the broader political scenario, Patil accused the Mahayuti-led state govt of lacking the confidence to face the electorate in local body polls. "Since Mahayuti came to power in the state, the state of governance is poor. The Mahayuti leaders are uncertain over public support in these elections, and therefore they will try to delay them," he said.Patil also reaffirmed that the Mahavikas Aghadi alliance will jointly contest the upcoming elections in Kolhapur.
