Maple Leafs Predicted to Land 7-Time All-Star

Maple Leafs Predicted to Land 7-Time All-Star originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
As the Toronto Maple Leafs continue their offseason, one of the main goals is to improve the defensive unit. Toronto wants to truly contend for a Stanley Cup next season, and one of the ways to make that happen is to upgrade the blueline.

Defense let the Maple Leafs down in the postseason this year, with the players not being able to help generate enough offense. But the front office has been active in trying to search for some upgrades across the NHL.
One name that could be interesting for the Maple Leafs is veteran Erik Karlsson of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Pittsburgh has been rumored to be dangling Karlsson in different trade talks, and now he is being linked to Toronto.
NHL writer James Murphy of RG.com linked the two sides together.
'There's more than just hearsay when it comes to the Leafs and Erik Karlsson right now,' a league source told Murphy.

'There's probably going to be salary retained, but the thought that there's some kind of bad blood between Dubas and the Leafs still that would prevent something like this is crazy. This is a business, and if there's enough interest from both teams and they figure out the cap hit and money, then that's all that matters," Murphy wrote.
Karlsson could get another chance to go after a title with the Maple Leafs, while Pittsburgh could net some future assets. The Maple Leafs do make sense as a landing spot for Karlsson, especially given where he is in his career.
The veteran likely doesn't have many years left to play, so making the most of his time with a contending team makes sense. Last season with the Penguins, Karlsson put up 11 goals and 42 assists.
Karlsson could help improve the Maple Leafs' defense on both sides of the ice. This could be a solid move for Toronto to consider, and there seems to be some smoke around it.

Cardinals Announce Injury News After Loss to Braves

Cardinals Announce Injury News After Loss to Braves originally appeared on Athlon Sports. At 50–46, the St. Louis Cardinals sit in third place in a highly competitive National League Central race. After a solid start to the year, the club has dropped seven of its last ten games, hampered largely by nagging injuries to key contributors such as third baseman Nolan Arenado and first baseman Willson Contreras. Advertisement Following Saturday's game against the Atlanta Braves, St. Louis announced that outfielder Lars Nootbaar was placed on the 10-day injured list with left rib pain after he left the game early, clearing a roster spot for catcher Ivan Herrera's return. Nootbaar also exited the series finale against the Washington Nationals on Thursday. After attempting to play through the discomfort, the 27-year-old admitted the pain persisted, prompting the Cardinals to shut him down before the All-Star break. An eighth-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, Nootbaar debuted with St. Louis in 2021 and has been a reliable run producer ever since, posting an OPS near .800 in each of his last three seasons. Advertisement This year, in 88 games, his bat has cooled considerably. He's batting .227 with a .712 OPS—career lows for a player who once provided consistent production. When he eventually rejoins the lineup, Nootbaar will aim to recapture his prior form and, just as importantly, stay healthy down the stretch. As St. Louis fights for a postseason spot, Nootbaar's return and steady production will be essential to keeping their playoff hopes alive. Red-Hot Cardinals Pitching Prospect Placed on Injured List

Red-Hot Cardinals Pitching Prospect Placed on Injured List originally appeared on Athlon Sports. St. Louis CardinalsNo. 10 prospect Tekoah Roby - who has been lights out over his last four starts - was placed on the 7-day injured list on Monday following last week's 5 2/3-inning shutout performance in which the righty struck out six. Advertisement Although the injury is unspecified, Roby's absence can be added to a long list of injuries to pitching prospects in the Cardinals organization this season. No. 5 Tink Hence and No. 2 Quinn Mathews have both missed time and No. 11 Cooper Hjerpe has been out all season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. The 23-year-old prospect is in the midst of an excellent year on the mound, which propelled him from Double-A to Triple-A earlier in the campaign - his first promotion since before the 2023 season. Jeff Curry-Imagn ImagesJeff Curry-Imagn Images After carrying a 2.49 ERA through 10 starts with Double-A Springfield in which he struck out 57 batters in 47 innings, Roby was promoted to Triple-A Memphis on June 9. The former third-round pick got off to a slow start with the Redbirds, allowing 12 runs in his first two starts, but seems to have found his footing over the last couple weeks. Advertisement Dating back to June 22, Roby has allowed just two earned runs in 21 innings across his last four starts. In that span, the Asheville, North Carolina native has struck out 21 batters and walked just five batters, carrying a 0.86 ERA and 1.10 WHIP. Despite the growing list of injuries sustained by pitchers in the Cardinals minor league system, help is on the way after the team drafted 12 college pitchers in the MLB Draft earlier this week. Kawhi Leonard, Masai Ujiri Announcement Made on Tuesday

Kawhi Leonard, Masai Ujiri Announcement Made on Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Masai Ujiri's unexpected departure from the Toronto Raptors front office came as a surprise to many around the league. Over his tenure, Ujiri cemented his reputation as one of the NBA's top executives, highlighted by orchestrating one of the boldest moves in franchise history — acquiring Kawhi Leonard from the San Antonio Spurs in 2018. Advertisement That gamble paid off immediately. Leonard went on to lead the Raptors to their first-ever NBA championship in 2019, delivering unforgettable playoff moments and earning lasting admiration from Toronto fans despite spending just one season with the team. Both Ujiri and Leonard have remained iconic figures within the fanbase ever since, with many Raptors faithfuls wondering what could have been had Leonard spent more time with the franchise. Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard (2).Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images Amid Ujiri's recent departure, it was announced on Tuesday that Leonard will make an appearance at the former Raptors GM's Giants of Africa Festival. According to the report: 'Kawhi Leonard will mentor campers, open a new 🏀 court in partnership with Giants of Africa at St. Ignatius School, and host a clinic for 50 local youth in one of Kigali's most underserved districts.' Advertisement The news is yet another sign that Leonard and Ujiri have maintained a strong bond well beyond their championship run in Toronto — even after Leonard's move to the Los Angeles Clippers in 2019. With Leonard now entering his seventh year in Los Angeles, he'll hope to lead another franchise to its first championship. As for Ujiri, it remains to be seen if he'd return to the NBA next season and which teams would be willing to acquire his services.
