Upgrade GEMCH in Perundurai into multi super speciality hospital: AITUC

The Hindu07-06-2025
The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has urged the State government to upgrade the Government Erode Medical College and Hospital (GEMCH) in Perundurai into a multi super speciality hospital to enhance healthcare facilities in the region.
A memorandum in this regard was prepared by AITUC's Erode district president S. Chinnasamy and was recommended and submitted by Tiruppur MP and AITUC All India vice-president K. Subbarayan to Health Minister Ma. Subramanian during his visit to the hospital on Friday.
According to the memorandum, the Ramalingam Tuberculosis Sanatorium (RTS), located in Sanitorium, Perundurai, was established in 1939. In 1992, it was converted into a medical college and hospital under the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (IRT–PMCH). Later, in 2018, it was taken over by the Government of Tamil Nadu, and since 2020, it has been functioning as the GEMCH.
Currently, the hospital lacks facilities for treatment of various ailments, including cardiology, nephrology, neurology, oncology, and plastic surgery. As a result, patients are compelled to travel nearly 80 km to Coimbatore or Salem for treatment, causing severe hardship. Therefore, the memorandum strongly urged the government to upgrade the hospital into a full-fledged multi super speciality facility with comprehensive infrastructure. With the long-standing demand for an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the region still unmet, the upgrade was described as all the more critical.
The memorandum also called for upgrading the Government Hospital in Perundurai town to at least a 60-bed facility. Additionally, it sought the elevation of the upgraded Government Primary Health Centres in Chennimalai and Thingalur into full-fledged government hospitals. It also requested the establishment of new Government Primary Health Centres in Pandiyampalayam and Ingur villages.

DMK MLA Ezhilan Naganathan submits report on State Autonomy in Health and Medical Education to committee

: DMK MLA Ezhilan Naganathan has submitted a report on State Autonomy in Health and Medical Education to The High-Level Committee on Union –State Relations, appointed by the State government. The high-level committee held a consultation meeting on August 14. 'The health sector in India operates within a constitutional framework that assigns primary responsibility for public health and sanitation to the State list. Yet, over the past two decades, there has been a gradual but pronounced centralisation of powers, funding, and decision-making in health, medical education, drug regulation, and organ transplantation governance,' the report said. Tamil Nadu, with its strong public health foundation, has consistently delivered outcomes well above the national average in maternal health, infant mortality reduction, immunisation coverage, and organ donation. However, recent shifts in Central policy have constrained the State's ability to innovate and adapt to local needs, it said. The report recommended restoring medical education from the concurrent list to the State list, and called for abolishing the National Medical Commission and restoring the Medical Council of India. National health programmes should be devised with State government consultation to streamline proper allocation and appropriate use of resources, it said. States must be allowed to reallocate at least 50% of Central health grants to State-priority interventions without Union clearance, are among the key recommendations in the report.

Apple restores blood oxygen feature in iOS 18.6.1, watchOS 11.6.1 after US ban

Apple is bringing back blood oxygen measurement to some of its latest Apple Watch models in the United States, but with a twist. The feature is returning after months of absence following a patent dispute that forced the company to remove it from newly sold devices. Now, Apple is restoring the feature with a workaround through the latest software updates to iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS decision to release the update follows a fresh US Customs ruling that allows the company to import watches with a redesigned version of the technology. So now instead of processing readings on the watch itself, the updated system will allow Apple Watch to send raw sensor data to the paired iPhone for calculation. The final results will then be available in the Health app's Respiratory section. In short, Apple Watch users will once again be able to measure their blood oxygen levels with their watch, but the results will appear on the on blood oxygen feature in Apple WatchThe latest ruling around the workaround stems from a long-running legal battle between Apple and Masimo, a California-based medical technology firm known for its pulse oximeters. The company accused Apple of infringing patents related to pulse oximetry, the technology behind blood oxygen measurement. It even alleged that the iPhone maker had poached employees to gain trade secrets. Masimo took the case to the US International Trade Commission (ITC) and, after years of back-and-forth, the ITC sided with Masimo in 2023, leading to an import ban on certain Apple Watches equipped with the disputed technology. Following the ruling, Apple could no longer sell models like the Series 9 and Ultra 2 in the US with the original blood oxygen feature. By 17 January 2024, Apple had to ship these watches without the functionality enabled, while models sold before that date — or outside the US — retained their full with the new OS update, Apple is reintroducing the feature in the US via this workaround. 'Users with these models in the U.S. who currently do not have the Blood Oxygen feature will have access to the redesigned Blood Oxygen feature by updating their paired iPhone to iOS 18.6.1 and their Apple Watch to watchOS 11.6.1,' the company said. It added that there will be 'no impact to Apple Watch units previously purchased that include the original Blood Oxygen feature, nor to Apple Watch units purchased outside of the U.S.'However, it is worth noting that the new version only applies to watches sold after the ITC ban took effect. Users can check eligibility by looking at the device's serial number on the back. Apple Watch models with numbers ending in 'LW/A' are the models which were affected by the ban and will receive the redesigned blood oxygen feature via the launched blood oxygen tracking in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. While it was never promoted as a medical-grade diagnostic tool, the feature proved popular among health-conscious users and those monitoring respiratory issues. It is also part of the company's wider health and fitness tracking suite, which includes ECG readings, irregular heart rhythm notifications, sleep tracking, temperature sensing, fall detection, and more.- Ends
