Global women's seven-a-side football series launched with $100m investment
The new series of invitational 'grand slam' tournaments, first reported by the Guardian, will feature $5m prize money per event. It is funded by investment from the US-based philanthropist Jennifer Mackesy, co-owner of the NWSL club Gotham FC, and will be broadcast live by the streaming platform DAZN.
The teams involved in the first eight-team competition have not been confirmed, but a different set of clubs will compete in the second event in November-December, which will be staged on a different continent. The winning team at each event will receive $2.5m.
The organisers say players will be 'at the heart' of the series and they have been guided by a player advisory council, which is led by the former USWNT winger Tobin Heath and also includes the former Sweden captain Caroline Seger, the former England and Team GB defender Anita Asante, the ex-USA right-back Kelley O'Hara, and the former France defender Laura Georges, who previously spent more than seven years as the secretary general of the French football federation.
'World Sevens Football' has named the former US women's international and Bay FC co-founder Aly Wagner as chief of strategy, and she told the Guardian: 'This is one of those really pivotal moments in women's football, and an opportunity for us to do something unique and different. This is a global series that will travel the world and one of the keys to this is really opening the market and growing the market of women's football in those places.
'The seven-v-seven format is one the players love, it's one of their favourite things to do in training, the small-sided games and it's one that I think fans will end up clamouring for. It's so intense, action-packed and it's all the stuff that players love, one-v-one duels, shots, goals.
'This is going to be a world-class event for these players, they're going to be treated the way we always dreamed of being treated as players, from the moment they step off the plane.'
The inaugural tournament will be staged from 21-23 May in Estoril, Portugal, on a grass pitch at Estádio António Coimbra da Mota, where it is understood a 'stadium within a stadium' will be built around a half-sized pitch for the seven-a-side games. That is directly in the run-up to this year's Women's Champions League final, being staged nearby in Lisbon, so the two finalists will not be involved in the first event.

The venues for future events have not been announced but the organisers say they are planning to go to cities 'across the United States, Mexico, Asia, Europe, and beyond'. The group have been in dialogue with Fifa and Uefa but do not expect to need any governing body's permission to run the series, because seven-a-side is not a codified form of the game.

Parsons said his attempts to discuss an extension started after the 2023 season but have repeatedly been met by 'radio silence' from the Cowboys. 'Up to today the team has not had a single conversation with my agent about a contract,' Parsons wrote. 'Not one demand has been made by my agent about money, years or anything else. 'Still I stayed quiet but again after repeated shots at myself and all the narratives I have made a tough decision I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys. My trade request has been submitted to Stephen Jones personally.' Parsons is scheduled to earn $24m this season on his fifth-year option. The 2021 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year has recorded double-digit sacks in each of his first four seasons and has watched the market for pass rushers explode. Defensive end Myles Garrett signed a four-year, $160m extension with the Cleveland Browns. Maxx Crosby inked a three-year, $106.5m extension with the Las Vegas Raiders. TJ Watt's extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers was for three years and $123m. A Parsons extension likely would be in the same ballpark – or more. Per the Athletic, Parsons and team owner Jerry Jones talked directly in the spring, and the Cowboys believe those conversations were negotiations with a deal for an extension in place. The Parsons' camp instead portrayed the meetings as talks and not negotiations, and that the Cowboys have declined to negotiate with his agent because team officials believed an agreement already was in place. Speaking in April at the NFL's annual league meeting, Jones acknowledged his conversation with Parsons, saying the two spoke for 'five or six hours' to work out a long-term extension. 'Most of the issues we are in agreement on. We discussed it all,' Jones said April 1. 'But we obviously don't have an agreement relative to the new contract.' The Dallas Morning News reported in March that Parsons was seeking a record- setting $200m contract extension that would make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL. Parsons recorded 12 sacks, 43 tackles and two forced fumbles in 13 games (all starts) last season. A Pro Bowl selection in each of his first four seasons in the league, Parsons has totaled 256 tackles (63 for loss), 112 quarterback hits, 52.5 sacks, nine forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries in 63 career games (all starts).

Marlins complete improbable comeback to beat Yankees 13-12
August 2 - With one out in the ninth, Xavier Edwards scored from third base on a swinging bunt by Agustin Ramirez as the host Miami Marlins rallied for a 13-12 walk-off win over the New York Yankees on Friday night. The Marlins trailed 9-4 before scoring six runs in the seventh inning. They also entered the bottom of the ninth down 12-10. All-Star Kyle Stowers led Miami with a grand slam, and Javier Sanoja homered twice. Jose Caballero, making his Yankees debut, made a key fielding error in right field in the ninth inning, leading to Miami's final rally. Giancarlo Stanton, playing against his former team, and Trent Grisham each drilled three-run homers for New York. Marlins center fielder Jakob Marsee made his MLB debut, going 1-for-2 with three walks, one double and two runs. Anthony Bender (3-5) got the win despite allowing two runs in the top of the ninth. Yankees All-Star Carlos Rodon got a no-decision despite striking out nine batters. He allowed two hits, a season-high-tying five walks and four runs in 4 2/3 innings. Bryson Stott drives in game-winner as Phillies rally past Tigers
August 2 - Bryson Stott drove in two runs Friday, including the game-winner in the eighth inning, to help the host Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-4 victory over Detroit, snapping the Tigers' four-game winning streak. Starter Ranger Suarez gave up three runs on four hits over seven innings for Philadelphia. The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning when Gleyber Torres belted his 12th homer of the year 404 feet to left field, scoring Wenceel Perez and Jahmai Jones. Philadelphia loaded the bases in the seventh and pulled within 3-1 when Stott flew out to center field, driving in Nick Castellanos. Otto Kemp then cut it to 3-2 when he scored off of Trea Turner's single to right. The Phillies knotted the game with Kyle Schwarber's single to right field that brought home newly acquired Harrison Bader. On the ensuing at-bat, Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper was ejected when he argued with third base umpire Vic Carapazza, who called him out on a check-swing third strike. The Tigers retook the lead when Perez hit a solo shot to center field in the eighth off of Orion Kerkering (6-4). The Phillies tied it 4-4 in the bottom of the inning with Kemp's double that scored Castellanos from second and went ahead 5-4 when Stott's infield single brought in Kemp. Stott had originally been called out on a throw to first base, but a challenge by Philadelphia was successful. Despite allowing the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, Kerkering picked up the win. Jhoan Duran, who was obtained in a trade with Minnesota on Wednesday, came on in the ninth and registered three quick outs for his 17th save of the season. Detroit starter Jack Flaherty struck out seven and allowed one run and two hits over six innings. Four Tigers relievers were unable to keep the Phillies at bay. Brenan Hanifee (3-3) picked up the loss after allowing Philadelphia's final two runs. --Field Level Media
