The Dominican government on Friday released a preliminary report on the deadly nightclub roof collapse that claimed at least 221 lives in the capital, Santo Domingo, earlier this week.
The document, however, did not specify the causes of the structural failure.
The collapse occurred just after midnight on Tuesday during a live concert at the popular Jet Set nightclub. The venue was hosting renowned merengue singer Rubby Perez, who was among those killed in the incident.
Authorities said 189 people were rescued from the rubble, and 17 others remain hospitalised with injuries.
The Emergency Operations Center (COE) confirmed that the nightclub was operating at full capacity at the time of the collapse, though the exact number of attendees remains unknown.
According to ticketing platforms and local reports, the venue can accommodate between 700 and 1,000 people.
Over 4,500 emergency workers were mobilised in response, with search and recovery operations lasting nearly 59 hours. Rescuers combed through debris to retrieve survivors, recover bodies, and assist grieving families.
The National Institute of Forensic Pathology is still working to identify all the deceased and return their remains to relatives.
"This is the hardest task I've had in my 20 years of leading the COE," said Juan Manuel Mendez, the agency's director, during a press conference on Thursday.
A full investigation into the cause of the collapse is now underway. A joint team of national and international structural experts has been appointed to examine the venue's design, maintenance records, and compliance with safety regulations.
Public reaction to the tragedy has been one of grief and growing frustration, with many calling for stricter enforcement of building codes and safety inspections in entertainment venues.
President Luis Abinader is scheduled to attend a memorial mass on Sunday at the Polideportivo De Haina sports centre. The mass will mark the final day of a three-day period of national mourning declared in honour of the victims.

Live content unites Netflix fans worldwide

Netflix continues to add more live content for viewers hungry for real-time entertainment, including the Tyson vs Paul boxing match, National Football League games and, most recently, the Tudum live fan event that showcased upcoming TV shows. "This is the first time we've done the show in this way, a live format," Shelly Gillyard, VP of Series Marketing for the US and Canada, told Reuters at the Netflix Tudum fan event last Saturday. "Previous years were on the ground fan activations," Gillyard added. Tudum is named after the sound that plays before each Netflix film and series. For Netflix, it was important to ensure that they were incorporating talent from all over the world for the global fan event. More than 100 Netflix stars and creators appeared in the show hosted by actor Sofia Carson, who starred in the airport thriller Carry On. The first two Tudum events took place in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2020 and in 2023. However, for 2025, it was relocated to Los Angeles, California. The 2020 Netflix Tudum in Brazil drew 50,000 people in four days and the post-COVID numbers for the 2023 Brazil Tudum were 35,000. Gillyard said the live event could take place somewhere else in the future and Netflix is focused less on where it is held and more on making it available globally. With major titles like Squid Game, Stranger Things, Wednesday, and Emily in Paris, combined with a performance by Lady Gaga, the streamer capitalised on fan interest. One of the largest draws for viewers was the premiere date announcements for Emmy award-winning series Stranger Things. The livestreamed event revealed that Stranger Things will have a fifth and final season split into three parts, with part one on November 26, 2025, part two on December 25, 2025 and the series finale on December 31, 2025.

Three Iranians charged in UK over alleged plot targeting journalists

PHOTO: REUTERS Listen to article Three Iranian men appeared in court in London on Friday accused of assisting Iran's foreign intelligence service and plotting violence against journalists working for a British-based broadcaster critical of Tehran. The three men - Mostafa Sepahvand, 39, Farhad Javadi Manesh, 44, and Shapoor Qalehali Khani Noori, 55, - have been charged with offences under Britain's National Security Act, brought in to give the authorities new powers to target threats from foreign states. They are accused of "engaging in conduct likely to assist a foreign intelligence service" between August 2024 and February this year, and police have said that it related to Iran. Sepahvand is also charged with carrying out surveillance in preparation to commit serious violence against a person, while Manesh and Noori were charged with surveillance with the intention that serious violent acts would be committed by others. The men appeared by videolink on Friday for a brief hearing at London's Old Bailey court during which their lawyers said all intended to plead not guilty to the charges. Prosecutors told a hearing last month that the allegations involved the targeting of journalists based in Britain connected with Iran International, a broadcaster critical of the Iranian government. They were remanded in custody until a formal plea hearing on September 26 and they are due to go on trial in October next year. The suspects were arrested last month on the same day counter-terrorism police detained five other men, including four Iranians, as part of a separate operation. Those men were later released without charge.
