Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas arrested

Gilbert Arenas, the former NBA All-Star known as 'Agent Zero,' was federally indicted on July 15, 2025, and arrested on July 30 in Los Angeles.
Prosecutors allege he hosted high-stakes illegal poker games at his Encino home from September 2021 to July 2022.
The indictment charges Arenas with conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business, running that business, and making false statements to federal investigators.
He is accused of renting out his mansion and directing co-conspirators, such as Arthur Katz, to stage the games, collect rent, and recruit participants.
The games reportedly included Pot Limit Omaha, with players charged a 'rake' per hand or pot.
Court records indicate the operation included staff like chefs, armed security, and valets. Young women were allegedly hired to serve drinks, provide massages, and offer companionship, some reportedly paying a 'tax' on their tips.
One defendant, Levgen Krachun, worked as a 'chip runner,' tracking player wins and distributing poker chips.
Arenas pleaded not guilty in federal court and was released on a $50,000 bond.
His trial is scheduled to begin on September 23, 2025. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison per count.
Among the five co-defendants arrested are Yevgeni Gershman, identified as a suspect in an Israeli-based organized crime group and also charged with immigration fraud tied to a sham marriage; Evgenni Tourevski; Allan Austria; Yarin Cohen; and Levgen Krachun.
Each faces similar gambling-related charges.
The case surfaced amid renewed attention on Arenas after the Netflix documentary Untold: Shooting Guards, which revisited incidents from his playing days, including the 2009 gun-related locker room confrontation that led to his suspension

Gaza: Israeli fire kills 22 more

GAZA CITY, Palestinian Territories: Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli gunfire and air strikes killed at least 22 people on Friday, including eight who were waiting to collect food aid in the war-battered Palestinian territory. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that five people were killed in a strike in the southern Gaza Strip, and four more when a vehicle was hit in the central area of Deir el-Balah. Bassal said Israeli forces killed five Palestinians who were trying to return to the Gaza City area, in the territory's north, after word had spread that troops had withdrawn from there. There was no comment from the Israeli military, which told AFP it could not confirm any of the incidents without specific coordinates for each of them. The civil defence agency reported deadly fire at Palestinians who were seeking humanitarian aid, in a territory where UN-backed experts have reported that 'famine is now unfolding'. Bassal said six people were killed by Israeli gunfire while waiting near northern Gaza's Zikim crossing, through which aid trucks have entered from Israel in recent weeks.

US, allies accuse Iran of 'overseas killings'

The United States and more than a dozen of its allies on Thursday accused Iran of attempting to kill or kidnap people in Western countries, including dissidents, journalists and officials. "We are united in our opposition to the attempts of Iranian intelligence services to kill, kidnap, and harass people in Europe and North America in clear violation of our sovereignty," the countries said in a joint statement. "These services are increasingly collaborating with international criminal organizations to target journalists, dissidents, Jewish citizens, and current and former officials in Europe and North America. This is unacceptable," the statement said. A UK parliamentary committee earlier this month blamed Iran for at least 15 attempts to kill or kidnap British-based individuals since 2022. Dutch intelligence meanwhile accused Tehran of staging a 2024 assassination attempt on an Iranian living in that country. The plot was thwarted when police intervened and arrested two suspects

Gilbert Arenas denies role in illegal gambling ring after arrest

Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas has broken his silence following his arrest on charges related to an alleged illegal gambling operation in Encino, California. Arenas, 43, was arrested on July 30 and later released on a $50,000 bond. In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), Arenas danced down a staircase, saying, 'They can't hold me,' and captioned the clip, 'I'm back on the streets 🗣️ This ain't got shyt to do with me. Just rented the house. Wasn't apart.' Im Back on the Streets 🗣️This aint got shyt to do with me ' just rented the house' Wasnt apart — Gilbert Arenas (@NoChillGilZero) July 31, 2025 According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for Central California, Arenas and five others are accused of running a high-stakes illegal poker ring out of a rented mansion. The charges include one count of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business, one count of operating such a business, and one count of making false statements to federal investigators. Arenas pleaded not guilty, and his trial is set for September 23. The indictment also names Yevgeni 'Giora' Gershman, an alleged Israeli organized crime member, who is accused of recruiting young women to serve drinks, offer massages, and provide companionship during the poker games. Organizers reportedly took a cut from the women's tips and the game pots. Arenas' attorney, Jerome Friedberg, urged the public to respect Arenas' presumption of innocence, saying, 'He has the same right as any other citizen.' This isn't Arenas' first controversy involving card games. In 2009, he was suspended from the NBA after a locker room incident involving guns and a gambling dispute with teammate Javaris Crittenton. The case has once again put the former All-Star under legal scrutiny as federal prosecutors prepare for trial.
