UEFA Europa League: Tottenham End Trophy Drought With Win Over Manchester United
Last Updated:
Ange Postecoglou and Co. shattered a 17-year-trophy drought as Brennan Johnson's lone strike helped Tottenham beat Manchester United 1-0 in the final of the UEL.
Premier League club Tottenham picked up a 1-0 win over Manchester United at the San Mames on Thursday to clinch the UEFA Europa League title.
Ange Postecoglou and Co. shattered a 17-year-trophy drought as Brennan Johnson's lone strike helped Tottenham beat Manchester United 1-0 in the final of the UEL.
The Welshman, who has enjoyed an incredible campaign under Postecoglou, put the finishing touch on a move created on the left by Rodrigo Bentancur's movement to attract a couple of United players to himself before releasing the ball to Pape Sarr, who tossed one into the box to trouble the United back line. The Senegalese international's intentions turned out fortuitous for Spurs, who took the lead with Johnson bundling the ball into the net beyond Andre Onana. It might have come off Luke Shaw, but the lilywhites edged ahead in the summit clash.
Spurs took the slender lead into the break and looked reassured of the advantage following the resumption of play. United went closest to levelling when Rasmus Hojlund's headed effort cleared off the line by Mickey Van De Ven.
United also had to endure the sight of Guglielmo Vicario keeping Shaw's headed effort deep into second half stoppage time, before Casemiro's Hail Mary bicycle effort found the wrong side of the net in the final knockings of the game.
Tottenham skipper Heung Min-Son, who replaced Richarlison in the second half of the fixture, lifted the trophy in front of the thousands of travelling Spurs fans as Postecoglou kept his promise of delivering trophies in his second season up.

Martin hired as Rangers manager and handed a big task: Regain the Scottish title from Celtic
Six months after being fired by Southampton, Russell Martin crossed the border to take over as manager of Scottish giant Rangers on Thursday and tasked with regaining the league title from fierce Glasgow rival Celtic. Martin guided Southampton to promotion to the Premier League last year but left in December following one win from the team's first 16 games. The 39-year-old Martin has secured a quick return to management at Rangers, going back to a club where he spent a half season on loan in 2018. 'From my time here, I had a taste of how special this club is, the expectation, the passion and the history,' Martin said. 'Now, as I return, I'm determined to bring success back, for the supporters, the players, and everyone inside this club. There's a lot to be done, but the goal is clear: win matches, win trophies and give Rangers fans a team that they can be proud of.' Rangers finished last season under the caretaker management of its former captain, Barry Ferguson, after firing Frenchman Philippe Clement in February. Appointing Martin — an Englishman who played international soccer for Scotland — is the latest big move by Rangers after a U.S.-based consortium, which includes an investment arm of the San Francisco 49ers, purchased a majority ownership stake in the club. Health insurance entrepreneur Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises led a consortium of investors to have bought a 51% stake. A new sporting director, Kevin Thelwell, officially began work at Rangers on Monday. Celtic's stranglehold on Scottish soccer has just continued with a 13th Premiership title in 14 seasons. Rangers won the only other title in that period, under Steven Gerrard in the 2020-21 season. Rangers and Celtic now have 55 Scottish league titles each. soccer: /hub/soccer

Soccer-Toney never feared Saudi switch would end England recall chances
June 5 - Ivan Toney said he never had any doubts about his chances of an England recall following his move to the Saudi Pro League after the free-scoring Al-Ahli striker returned to the squad ahead of Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Andorra. The 29-year-old, who last featured for England in their 2-1 defeat by Spain in the Euro 2024 final last July, was banned for eight months in 2023 for breaching the FA's rules on betting. He moved to Al-Ahli from Premier League club Brentford last August and has scored 30 goals in 44 appearances in all competitions for the Saudi side. The forward gave an emphatic "No" when asked at a training camp in Girona on Wednesday if he thought moving to Saudi Arabia may affect his England chances. "You see with me I think if you're just doing the right thing, playing football, playing well and scoring goals – a striker's job, that's what you're in a team to do – it doesn't matter where you play in the world, I feel like you should still get the chance," he told British media. "I think it's been proven me being me being back here and being back amongst the boys. It feels good to see the faces again and it feels good to get stuck in." Only Al-Nassr forward Cristiano Ronaldo scored more goals - 25 - in the Saudi top-flight in the 2024-25 season than Toney, who notched 23, more than former Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema and ex-Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang . "I feel like I'm in good form. As you see, I'm here, I'm still scoring goals," said Toney, who has been capped six times for England. "So, hopefully I can keep doing that and be in the mix for the World Cup." After playing Andorra in Spain on Saturday England host Senegal in a friendly on June 10.

Chelsea Announce 30 Million-Pound Liam Delap Signing From Ipswich Town
Chelsea beat off competition from Premier League rivals to sign English striker Liam Delap from Ipswich on Wednesday for a reported fee of £30 million ($41 million) Delap, 22, scored 12 Premier League goals during his sole season at Portman Road but could not prevent Ipswich making an immediate return to the Championship. Manchester United and Everton were also reportedly willing to meet the buyout clause in the England under-21 international's contract. But Chelsea have won the race for the former Manchester City forward, bolstering their attacking options ahead of the Club World Cup in the United States, starting later this month. "I understand the stature of this club and can see the trajectory it is on with these players and the head coach," said Delap, who has signed a six-year contract, in a Chelsea statement. "It's going to be an incredible place for me to develop, and I hope to achieve amazing things here and help the club win more trophies." The Blues finished fourth in the Premier League and will return to the Champions League next season after a two-year absence. And Enzo Maresca's men last week beat Real Betis 4-1 in the Conference League final to secure a trophy in the Italian manager's first season in charge. In mid-December Chelsea were within touching distance of eventual Premier League champions Liverpool before hitting a rocky patch. They finished the season strongly, securing a top-five spot on the final day of the season but were hamstrung by their lack of a clinical number nine. Senegal international Nicolas Jackson scored just 10 times in 30 Premier League appearances, while Christopher Nkunku looks set to leave the club after an underwhelming two-year spell. Delap, the son of former Stoke midfielder Rory Delap, began his career at Manchester City but struggled to break into Pep Guardiola's star-studded first team. After loan spells in the second tier with Stoke, Preston and Hull, he was snapped up by Ipswich in a deal worth up to £20 million after they won promotion to the Premier League a year ago. Delap was one of the few success stories for the Tractor Boys during a difficult season as they were relegated back to the Championship with just 22 points. Chelsea will face Flamengo, LAFC and ES Tunis in the group stages of the Club World Cup, which gets underway on June 14.
