Potholes, poor road surface leads to snarls at RTO Chowk
2
Pune: Long queues of vehicles have become a common affair at the RTO Chowk on Raja Bahadur Mill Road, irking commuters.
Several potholes and rough road surfaces are hampering vehicular flow, and the snarls become chaotic during rush hours.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) carried out pothole repairs recently; however, commuters reported that the work was of inferior quality, and the tarring was likely to loosen and pose a risk, especially for two-wheeler riders.

"I spend a long time just crossing the junction. The road surface is also bumpy, resulting in vehicles moving slowly and causing congestion," said Anup Jadhav, who travelled from RTO Chowk towards Pune Station.
Saket Pujari, a regular visitor to the RTO office, said traffic near the RTO junction has become chaotic. "Two stretches—Pune Station to RTO Chowk and Sangam Bridge to RTO Chowk—witness long queues of vehicles almost every day. There are significant instances of wrong-side driving. Those entering and exiting the RTO premises are facing a lot of trouble. Despite the RTO office being nearby, the authorities are not able to find solutions to the problem," Pujari said.

Commuters have been demanding an alternate road link from the railway's land towards the Juna Bazaar Chowk, and the widening of the existing rail underpass to reduce the traffic burden at the chowk.
Officials from the PMC's road department said they are initiating pothole repairs and resurfacing at all major junctions, including RTO Chowk. "We undertook resurfacing of the road recently. However, if there are complaints regarding potholes, our team will inspect the road stretches to carry out repairs," a civic official said.

Ferrari's Leclerc stuns the McLarens to take pole for F1's Hungarian Grand Prix
Charles Leclerc snatched a surprise first pole position of the year for Ferrari at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Saturday, beating both McLarens. Leclerc punched the air in delight as he climbed out of the car after beating Oscar Piastri by 0.026 of a second and the other McLaren of Lando Norris by .041. Leclerc had consistently been the best of the rest behind the McLarens in practice but remained well off Piastri and Norris' pace. That changed in qualifying, with the help of conditions which gradually got gloomier and windier, working against the McLarens. Norris and Piastri were each about half a second slower per lap in the final part of qualifying, compared to the second segment. Still, pole came as a shock at a circuit which Leclerc had called 'by far the worst track of the season for me' on Thursday. 'What?' Leclerc exclaimed over the radio when he was told he'd qualified first. 'Honestly, I have no words. It's probably one of the best pole positions I've ever had because it's the most unexpected,' Leclerc added later. Pole position is usually a big advantage in Hungary, where overtaking is difficult, but Norris noted the chance that rain could spring some surprises for Sunday's race. 'I have no idea how it will go, but one thing for sure is that I will do absolutely everything in order to keep that first place,' said Leclerc, who's on pole for the 27th time in F1 but doesn't have the best record converting those starts into wins. He'll be seeking his ninth F1 victory Sunday. It was a stark contrast with yet another frustrating day for Lewis Hamilton in the other Ferrari. Hamilton has won the Hungarian Grand Prix a record eight times but qualified 12th as the seven-time champion's troubles in his first season with Ferrari continued. 'Every time, every time,' Hamilton told the team over the radio after he qualified outside the top 10 for the second straight race. That came after Ferrari's executive chairman John Elkann called it 'a rough season' in comments Saturday on the F1 website, and defended Ferrari's trust in team principal Fred Vasseur, whose contract extension was announced Thursday. Ferrari hasn't won a Grand Prix since Carlos Sainz, Jr.'s victory in Mexico in October, when the Spanish driver — now at Williams — also had the Italian team's last pole. Defending champion Max Verstappen was only eighth after struggling with the balance of his Red Bull, and his teammate Yuki Tsunoda was 16th. That piles more pressure on the Japanese driver, who hasn't scored a point in six races.

Mizoram launches urgent repair of key highways
1 2 Aizawl: In a strategic move, the Mizoram govt is seizing the opportunity presented by the suspension of commercial vehicle services from Monday to Saturday to conduct critical repairs on NH-306 and 06. These highways are vital links between Mizoram and the rest of India via Assam. Under the direct supervision of home minister K Sapdanga, who inspected the highways on Saturday, the state Public Works Department (PWD) and the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) are mobilizing manpower and machinery to execute the repairs with urgency starting Monday. Police are tasked with clearing all stranded vehicles, except 14-wheel trucks, by Sunday. From Monday to Wednesday, NH-306 and NH-06 will be closed to traffic, with only 407 trucks and smaller vehicles permitted on the Kawnpui-Serkhan-Durtlang (Aizawl) state highway, typically reserved for light motor vehicles and two-wheelers. Traffic Police from Aizawl and Assam's Kolasib district will oversee vehicle movement during this period. Additionally, Young Mizo Association (YMA) volunteers from local villages will assist the PWD and NHIDCL, with the state govt providing remuneration. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The NHIDCL's Delhi headquarters announced a Rs 50 crore allocation to expedite repairs, complementing the state government's recent Rs 1 crore contribution. MNNIT team develops advanced oil seal to boost two-wheeler performance
Prayagraj: In a significant breakthrough, a team of mechanical engineers at MNNIT Prayagraj has undertaken a pioneering project to design a leakage-resistant oil seal for motorcycle and scooter shock absorbers. Led by assistant professor Tej Pratap, the six-month initiative is backed by the Hero Group with an Rs 8.1 lakh grant, aiming to enhance ride quality and reduce maintenance costs. Unlike conventional efforts to redesign entire shock absorbers, this focused initiative targets the oil seal — a small but critical component that prevents hydraulic oil from leaking out of the shocker assembly. Leakage not only reduces suspension efficiency, but also damages internal shocker components, ultimately forcing vehicle owners to replace the entire unit or incur repeated repair costs. The MNNIT project aims to develop an advanced oil seal using new materials and seal geometries that can effectively eliminate this recurring problem. Pratap explained that the new seal design would enhance internal sealing strength, thereby preventing oil seepage even under high-stress and high-temperature conditions. The development process includes prototype fabrication, rigorous lab testing, and eventually, field testing in collaboration with Hero's R&D wing. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Struggling With Belly Fat? Working alongside Pratap are Abhishek Tiwari and Ashutosh Mishra from the Applied Mechanics Department. To meet project timelines, MNNIT is also appointing a dedicated project assistant with a stipend of Rs 30,000 per month. The team expects to deliver a working prototype within the next few months. This collaboration underscores a larger trend of industry-academia partnerships in solving practical engineering challenges. With this innovation, Hero Group and MNNIT aim to set a new standard for component reliability in India's booming two-wheeler market.
