Ford's Recall Affects Almost Every Cool Car They Make, and There's No Fix Yet

Gizmodo13-07-2025
If you've recently bought one of Ford's best-selling vehicles, like the wildly popular Bronco, the workhorse F-150, or the family-hauling Explorer, the company has some unsettling news for you. Ford is recalling a staggering 850,318 of its most iconic models worldwide, including 844,098 in the U.S. alone, from the 2021-2023 model years due to a defect that can cause the engine to suddenly stall while driving.
But the real kicker in this massive safety recall isn't just the danger of your engine cutting out on the highway. It's that Ford has admitted it doesn't have a solution yet, and has ordered its dealers to immediately stop selling or even demonstrating the affected vehicles. 'The remedy is under development,' the company plainly states in several documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
According to an urgent 'DELIVERY HOLD' notice sent on July 8 to all U.S. dealers, the problem lies with a faulty low-pressure fuel pump that can fail unexpectedly. The consequence is blunt and dangerous: 'An engine stall while driving increases the risk of a crash.'
The notice warns dealers they could face civil penalties of up to $27,168 per vehicle if they deliver an unremedied car. The list of affected vehicles, now frozen on dealership lots, reads like a who's who of Ford's modern lineup:
For current owners, the new documents provide critical information about what to watch for. Ford says that before a total failure, a driver might experience poor engine performance (like misfiring or running rough), a check engine light, or a sudden reduction in engine power. The failure is reportedly more likely to occur in 'warm weather' or when the vehicle has a low level of fuel.
For the nearly one million owners of these vehicles, the path forward is frustratingly unclear.
Ford plans to send out initial notification letters to owners around July 14, 2025, to inform them of the safety risk. However, a second letter will have to be sent once an actual fix is engineered and available. This leaves hundreds of thousands of drivers in a state of limbo, aware that their vehicle has a potentially critical flaw but with no immediate action to take.
This recall represents a significant blow to the automaker, highlighting a critical failure in a component used across its most profitable and popular vehicles. For now, concerned owners can contact Ford's customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or visit the NHTSA website for updates, but the only real answer they're looking for—how to fix it—is one Ford can't yet provide.

Why Cleveland-Cliffs Rallied Today

Key Points Cleveland-Cliffs beat revenue and earnings expectations. Its CEO sounded optimistic on the prospect for tariff-related benefits. However, those benefits have yet to come through in a material way. 10 stocks we like better than Cleveland-Cliffs › Shares of Cleveland-Cliffs (NYSE: CLF) rallied 5.6% on Tuesday as of 2:26 p.m. ET. The U.S.-based steelmaker reported second-quarter earnings today, and while revenue and earnings were down relative to last year, both metrics actually beat expectations. Furthermore, CEO Lourenco Goncalves was optimistic that the recent increase in steel tariffs should soon benefit the company. Cleveland delivers a beat, though it has a ways to go In the second quarter, Cleveland-Cliffs saw revenue decline by 3.1% to $4.9 billion, while adjusted (non-GAAP) earnings per share (EPS) fell to a loss of $0.50 per share from a positive $0.11 EPS in the year-ago quarter. Despite year-over-year declines, those figures actually came in ahead of expectations. It was also an especially trying quarter for carmakers in the wake of April 2 "Liberation Day" and the uncertainty that followed. Of note, autos encompass a significant part of Cleveland Cliffs' revenue. Still, Goncalves struck a an optimistic tone, saying that the recent steel tariffs were on the brink of helping Cleveland-Cliffs more than they were hurting demand, In the earnings press release, he said: We have started to see the positive impact that tariffs have on domestic manufacturing, protecting domestic jobs and national security. We expect this trend to continue, promoting the resurgence of the American automotive industry supported by a thriving domestic steel industry. ... Going forward, foreign competitors need to acquire steel capacity within the United States if they want to participate in this desirable market. As a publicly traded America-based company centered on automotive, electrical steels, stainless and plate, Cleveland-Cliffs' assets, business and footprint are uniquely positioned to benefit from this new reality. But much remains in doubt for Cleveland-Cliffs While Goncalves' statement is encouraging, it's not the first time he has been exceedingly optimistic about Cleveland-Cliffs' prospects. Moreover, it's unclear exactly how new tariffs will impact Cleveland-Cliffs' near-term financials. After all, amid the initial demand destruction resulting from new tariffs, Cleveland-Cliffs actually idled one its major blast furnaces, and either fully idled or partially idled several of its iron ore mines. And while tariffs have curtailed foreign competition, the market share of imports for finished steel have only declined by 5 percentage points, from 25% in January to 20% in May. While management predicts increased demand for steel and decreased exports over time, we have yet to see material evidence of that big advantage for domestic steelmakers. At the moment, Cleveland Cliffs is losing money and cutting costs in an attempt to produce cash flow to pay down its debt; in that light, it would be better for investors to take a wait-and-see approach to see if the purported tariff benefits really materialize. As of now, there is too much uncertainty to chase today's rally in the stock. Should you invest $1,000 in Cleveland-Cliffs right now? Elon Musk says Tesla will start adding vehicles it doesn't directly own into its robotaxi network next year

Owners of Tesla cars will be able to add their vehicles to the company's robotaxi network sometime next year, Elon Musk said on the company's quarterly earnings call on Wednesday, potentially allowing hundreds of thousands of customers to make money by remotely renting out their cars as self-driving cabs. 'I'd say confidently next year,' Musk, the CEO of Tesla, said on the call. 'I'm not sure when next year, but confidently next year.' The move would mark a major expansion of the company's robotaxi network, which officially launched last month in Austin with just a handful of self-driving vehicles that Tesla directly owns and operates. Tesla is trying to catch up with industry leader Waymo, whose fleet of self-driving robotaxis ferry paying customers in numerous U.S. cities. Musk noted that the Tesla team hasn't 'thought hard' about the details of adding cars that it doesn't directly own to the robotaxi service, and was still primarily focused on safety in Austin, where it debuted operations in June with a safety driver in the passenger seat. 'We need to make sure it works when the vehicles are fully under our control,' he said. Tesla reported that revenue in its most recent quarter fell 12% year-over-year to $22.5 billion, the EV company's worst performance in at least a decade. The company ascribed the decline to an ongoing slump in vehicle deliveries and falling prices (trends that were not helped by Musk's involvement in partisan politics) as well as declining revenue from environmental credits. Musk has suggested that Tesla would eventually incorporate Tesla EVs owned by its customers into the broader robotaxi network for several months now, raising the idea that individuals would be able to rent out their own cars and eventually even manage their own fleets. Besides the technological aspect of such a plan, it's unclear how regulatory and liability issues might come into play. And, as of now, Tesla still has yet to fully remove safety drivers from the vehicles that it owns and operates on its fledgling robotaxi service. For its initial Austin rollout, Tesla has had someone sitting in the passenger seat at all times. Tesla has gradually expanded its service radius in Austin (a map shared by Tesla online last week depicts the latest robotaxi service area in a distinctly phallic shape) and Musk said the company plans to expand it further in a couple weeks time. While Tesla's robotaxi service is currently only available to invitees including social media influencers who regularly post about the company, and not the general public, Musk laid out lofty expansion plans for the robotaxi service on Wednesday's earnings call, saying that Tesla was seeking regulatory permission to launch in the Bay Area, Nevada, Arizona, and Florida. 'As soon as we get the approvals and we prove our safety, then we'll be launching autonomous ride hailing in most of the country, and I think we'll probably have autonomous ride hailing in probably half the population of the U.S. by the end of the year,' he said. So far, there have been no major safety episodes in Austin since the launch of the robotaxi service, Tesla's CFO said on the call. Teslas have driven 7,000 autonomous miles thus far since June, he said. USC top recruit Alijjah Arenas needs surgery for knee injury and will be out 6 to 8 months

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Alijah Arenas ' college basketball career is on hold before the highly touted freshman has played his first game. He was diagnosed with a knee injury that will require surgery and rehab is expected to take at least six to eight months, the school said Wednesday. "Alijah is a tremendous worker, teammate, competitor, and person,' USC coach Eric Musselman. 'He is understandably disappointed that he will not be able to take the court to start the season, but his health is our No. 1 priority. We have no doubt that he will come back even stronger. We look forward to supporting him during this process.' Arenas, whose father Gilbert played in the NBA, was involved in a car crash that left him in an induced coma in April. He crashed his Tesla Cybertruck into a tree, smoke filled the front cabin and the doors wouldn't open. He spent nearly 10 minutes in the burning vehicle before bystanders helped pull him to safety. Arenas was in the hospital for six days but did not suffer major injuries. He is a five-star recruit and 2025 McDonald's All-American. The 2024 John R. Wooden High School Player of the Year is also the top scorer in CIF LA City Section history, accumulating 3,002 points in three years of high school. ___ AP college basketball: and The Associated Press
