UFC's Denise Gomes calls for strawweight contenders after TKO victory
UFC Fight Night 256 winner Denise Gomes talks to MMA Junkie and other reporters post-fight after her second-round TKO of Elise Reed in Las Vegas.
LAS VEGAS – Denise Gomes has a simple request to matchmakers after her UFC Fight Night 256 win: "I want someone that brings risk to me."
After running through Elise Reed (8-5 MMA, 4-5 UFC) for a TKO in less than six minutes in Saturday's strawweight bout at the UFC Apex, Gomes (11-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) said she is "unscathed" and looking to return to the octagon again in August.
Gomes isn't picky about the name she gets next, and admits she thinks more work needs to be done before she can ask for specific opponents.
"Honestly, right now I don't think I'm in a position to request anybody," Gomes told MMA Junkie through an interpreter post-fight at UFC Fight Night 256. "So, anybody in the division. Whoever they put in front of me, I know it's going to be a good fight. The big thing is just to keep on improving."
Gomes, 25, was too much for Reed from the outset of their fight. Her superior power was on display early and often, and after scoring multiple near stoppages, she finally found her fight-ending sequence in the opening moments of the second round.
The Brazilian said she could sense Reed was intimidated after she started to connect, and ultimately, she got the desired result.
"The knockout is always my goal," Gomes said. "That's the one thing I have in my arsenal that usually happens, and it's a go-to, but I've been working a lot on improving in every aspect of the fight, and I feel I was able to show a little bit in this fight. I was able to scare her a little with the grappling exchanges and the ground-and-pound, but the knockout is always something that I try to aim for."

Iran Superstar Plays Down Exit Speculation: 'I Have A Contract With Inter'

Iran Superstar Plays Down Exit Speculation: 'I Have A Contract With Inter' Iran international Mehdi Taremi addressed his future at Inter Milan after today's 3-0 win over North Korea. Speaking to the press after the game via FCInter1908, Taremi confirmed he has no intention of leaving San Siro. Advertisement Mehdi Taremi signed a multi-year contract last summer after leaving Porto as a free agent. Indeed, despite receiving offers from across the continent, he chose the Nerazzurri colors. However, his first season in Serie A didn't go as expected. Forced to play second fiddle to Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram, he only made seven league starts. Moreover, the 32-year-old scored an unenviable three goals across 43 appearances in all competitions. For further context, his only goal in Serie A came from the penalty spot. Therefore, rumors surrounding his future have quickly gained momentum at the end of the season. Advertisement Yet, Taremi has no doubt and wants to stay Inter. (Photo by) Despite his club struggles, Taremi continues to be Iran's standout performer. His national team secured the 2026 World Cup qualification as Group A winners. Furthermore, he registered a goal and an assist as Iran trounced North Korea 3-0 in their final qualifying fixture. After the game, he spoke to the press, offering an update on his future at Giuseppe Meazza. 'I have a contract with Inter, and if they allow me, I will stay with this team,' he admitted. Though it wasn't a memorable season for Taremi and Inter, overall, there's still a place for him in this team. Advertisement Indeed, Joaquin Correa already left the club to join Brazilian outfit Botafogo on a two-year deal. Meanwhile, Marko Arnautovic will soon sever ties with the Nerazzurri as the club refused to offer him fresh terms. However, Inter may sign two new strikers in the summer, with Ange-Yoan Bonny and Rasmus Hojlund topping their wishlist.

UFC Atlanta hit with lineup change on fight week

UFC Atlanta hit with lineup change on fight week It is with deep sorrow that I announce my first withdrawal from my fight in 15 UFC appearances. Unfortunately, I was not medically cleared due to a condition requiring surgical intervention. I trust this is part of a greater plan, and I'm committed to returning stronger. — Charles Jourdain (@JourdainAir) June 10, 2025 Ricky Simon has a new opponent for Saturday's UFC on ESPN 69. With Charles Jourdain unable to get medical clearance for an eye issue, Simon (21-6 MMA, 9-5 UFC) will now face Cameron Smotherman (12-5 MMA, 1-1 UFC) on the preliminary card at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. The bout will be contested at featherweight. The promotion announced the change Tuesday after an initial report Monday by Eurosport NL. "It is with deep sorrow that I announce my first withdrawal from my fight in 15 UFC appearances," Jourdain wrote on X. "Unfortunately, I was not medically cleared due to a condition requiring surgical intervention. I trust this is part of a greater plan, and I'm committed to returning stronger." Smotherman, 27, made his UFC debut in October when he upset Jake Hadley by unanimous decision on short notice. He returned in May, but lost by unanimous decision to Serhiy Sidey. Simon, 32, snapped a three-fight skid in February when he landed a first-round, performance bonus-earning bludgeoning punch on Javid Basharat.
