If pigeon-feeding ban continues in Mumbai, we will launch hunger strike from Aug 13, warns Jain muni

Time of India3 days ago
Mumbai: According to TV reports on Sunday, a Jain monk warned that members of the community will launch a hunger strike from Wednesday if the ban on feeding pigeons continues. Speaking to reporters, he said, "We will decide our final course of action on Aug 13, after Paryushan.
If the ban remains, we will begin a satyagraha and hunger strike."
He stressed that the Jain community is peace-loving and does not believe in taking up arms. "However, if needed to protect our religion, we will take up arms. We respect the Constitution, judiciary, and chief minister, but if our faith is attacked, we will not abide by court orders," he said.

Row erupts as KBC hosts officers Sofiya, Vyomika

New Delhi: The appearance of three army personnel associated with Operation Sindoor in the latest promo of quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati has sparked a debate, with many criticising the development as a 'PR stunt' by the ruling government to 'milk votes'. Colonel Sofiya Qureshi (Indian Army) and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh (Indian Air Force) — the two officers who addressed briefings during Operation Sindoor — are set to appear in the Independence Day episode of the Amitabh Bachchan-hosted show along with Commander Prerna Deosthalee (Indian Navy), as per the promo. 'This can't be allowed. It is against the Constitution and military ethos,' said ex-army officer Praveen Dawar. 'This is just unbelievable. Operation Sindoor heroes appearing on national TV show KBC Just because one 'nationalist' party wants to milk some votes?' a social media user posted on X. 'Our Army was sacrosanct, above politics, beyond PR. Today, Modi govt parades serving soldiers on shows like KBC for image building. Even our Army has been made a political tool for Modi's PR. Our forces are to defend the nation, not a politician's brand,' wrote an X user, peeved at the development. Some social media users have also questioned if such TV appearances of army personnel in uniform were in accordance with the protocol of the Indian Army. 'The officers concerned could have declined to be paraded in uniform in such a manner. They didn't. The matter ends there. Rest is your politics,' said retired Indian Air Force pilot Vijainder K Thakur, a military analyst.

Congress routinely blames EVMs, there is no cure for lies: Saini

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini Wednesday took a jibe at Congress' Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and said that Congress won 10 seats in the state by margins ranging from 100 to 1,000 votes. 'If there were any faults in the EVMs, they would not have won these seats. People should not be misled on the issue. Congress members should explain this to their leader Rahul Gandhi and get him treated, as there is no cure for.' Saini was interacting with the media persons after the Tiranga Yatra in Kurukshetra, Wednesday. The Development and Panchayats Minister Krishan Lal Panwar, Agriculture and Farmers & Welfare Minister Shyam Singh Rana, and Chairman Dharam Veer Mirzapur were also present on the occasion. 'Whenever election results are announced whether in the state or across the country, Congress routinely blames the EVMs. During this election, Congress leaders repeatedly claimed that if Narendra Modi became Prime Minister for a third term, the Constitution would be in danger. Rahul Gandhi and other leaders of the INDIA alliance campaigned using the Constitution as a symbol, but the people of the country rejected their false narratives. Instead, they elected Modi as PM. In Haryana too, the BJP formed the government for the third time in a row,' Saini said, adding that the Congress has no real issues left and is now frustrated. Prajapati community gets new identity CM Saini and his cabinet colleagues Wednesday distributed eligibility certificates to the members of Prajapati community across various parts of Haryana. The CM presided over the state-level function in Kurukshetra for distribution of these entitlement certificates to families belonging to Prajapati community. The programme was held simultaneously in all 22 districts and the certificates will benefit around 1,00,000 families with land entitlement certificates. Under the scheme, entitlement certificates have been issued in about 1,700 villages, granting the Prajapati community collective rights for soil excavation. A government spokesperson said, 'These certificates, issued under the Gram Shamlat Bhumi Niyamwali, 1964, not only grant the right to use the land but also provide legal authority to carry out their work without hindrance. This initiative will enable the Prajapati community to give a new direction to their art, help realise their dreams and allow them to manufacture products without having to travel far.' Describing the Prajapati community as hardworking, honest and skilled, Saini said that the art of making earthen pots has been an integral part of our cultural heritage. 'However, over time, this skill has not received the respect and opportunities the community deserves, and the necessary resources to connect the new generation with this art were not provided in time. Earlier, in every village, adequate land was available for the Prajapati community to source soil, but previous governments failed to address this need. During the Congress regime, even the workplaces of the Prajapati community were encroached upon. Not only that, those in power at the time conspired against the community and attempted to take away their livelihood. A superficial promise of allotting 100-square-yard plots in villages was made, but those plots were carved out from the very land where the Prajapati community earned their living. Such policies brought the employment of this community almost to a standstill.'

Depts asked not to use the term ‘harijan'

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has asked all its departments, public and educational institutes and others to stop using the term 'harijan' in communications, officials said on Wednesday. The government suggested to the authorities concerned that words like 'Scheduled Caste' in English and 'anusuchita jati' in Odia or other national languages should be used to 'denote persons belonging to Scheduled Castes as notified under Article 341 of the Constitution', according to a letter issued on August 12 by the Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the ST and SC Development, Minorities and Backward Class Welfare department. The letter was sent to all the additional chief secretaries, principal secretaries and commissioner-cum-secretaries, the officials said. 'They have been instructed to ensure that the word 'harijan' does not appear in any official communications, records, transactions, caste certificates, publications, departmental names or any other form of use,' an official said. The authorities concerned are also directed to educate their staff and update existing documents and records accordingly, he said. They are also told to submit a compliance report on the action taken on the matter, another official said. The State government's action came in the wake of the guidelines issued by the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC), prohibiting the use of the word 'harijan'. These guidelines will be strictly enforced in all government offices, the official said. In 1982, the Centre had asked all State governments not to use the term 'harijan' to refer to Dalits. Following fresh guidelines prepared by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, a similar order was also issued in 2013 to all the States, directing them to ensure non-use of the word 'harijan' not only in caste certificates but also in official communications, the officials said. The Odisha Assembly has also prohibited the use of the word 'harijan', they said.
