This year, McDonald's Malaysia took home two accolades – the Corporate Compassion Excellence Award and, for the second consecutive year, the Long-Standing Excellence Award.
The 10th edition of the Sustainability and CSR Malaysia Awards carried the theme 'Beyond Profits, Making Our World a Better Place'.
The awards ceremony was attended by Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad.
Through its long-standing Program Komuniti @ McDonald's, McDonald's Malaysia undertakes over 10,000 community initiatives annually, reaching Malaysians from all walks of life.
These efforts span initiatives such as children's welfare, educational support, food aid, festive contributions, and programmes supporting frontline workers, consistently reflecting the brand's dedication to touching lives and strengthening communities.
McDonald's Malaysia managing director and local operating partner Datuk Azmir Jaafar said, 'We are deeply honoured to be recognised for the eighth consecutive year and especially proud to receive the Long-Standing Excellence Award for the second year running.

'We remain committed to continuing this important work, standing with Malaysians, for Malaysians.'
The recognition received by McDonald's Malaysia this year reflected its steadfast dedication to creating long-term positive change within the communities it serves – a commitment it upheld year after year, he added.

Family, associates celebrate Dr Mahathir's 100th birthday with tributes, legacy

by SUFEA SALEHUDDIN A GRAND celebration was held at the Palace of the Golden Horses on Sunday to mark the 100th birthday of Malaysia's longest-serving Prime Minister (PM) Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Hosted by the hotel's founder Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew, the event brought together over 300 guests, including Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, family members, corporate figures, foreign dignitaries and long-time associates of the centenarian. Beyond commemorating a rare personal milestone, the celebration served as a tribute to Dr Mahathir's more than six decades of contributions to national development, with speeches and performances reflecting on his enduring legacy. The ceremony began with a rousing chorus of 'Happy Birthday' from the guests, followed by a cake-cutting ceremony and a special video presentation chronicling Dr Mahathir's life — from his early years in Alor Setar, Kedah, to his two terms as Malaysia's fourth and seventh PM. One of the evening's highlights was a musical performance by veteran banker and philanthropist Tan Sri Azman Hashim. In his brief remarks, Lee described Mahathir as 'a symbol of strength, struggle and strategic assurance'. 'He has been sidelined, debated, praised and criticised. But I believe all Malaysians — regardless of race, age or belief — can agree that very few individuals devote their entire lives to the country. Dr Mahathir has done exactly that,' he said. Lee added that the celebration was not only about looking back but also about setting the tone for the country's future. 'This is not just about Dr Mahathir. It is about Malaysia and whether we have the courage to prepare the country for the next 100 years,' he said.

Political unrest threatens Malaysia's tourism & economy

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysia Tourism Agency Association (MATA) has expressed concern that ongoing political instability and large-scale public demonstrations could harm Malaysia's international image, investor confidence, and tourism growth. Its president Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Harun said such unrest threatens efforts to promote Visit Malaysia Year 2026, a national initiative aimed at attracting millions of international tourists. 'Malaysia is now in a strong phase of post-pandemic economic recovery. Any actions that disrupt political stability and national security may hinder the growth of both the tourism and economic sectors,' he said in a statement. Mohd Khalid said prolonged street protests can affect business operations, job opportunities and investor confidence, ultimately increasing the cost of living for Malaysians. He stressed that public safety must remain a priority as large gatherings carry risks of provocation, conflict and chaos that could threaten public order. 'Stability and peace are the foundation of tourism growth. Without guaranteed safety, tourists will simply choose other destinations that are more stable and secure.' He added that a negative global media coverage could also severely impact the country's Islamic and nature-based tourism sectors. 'Tourism is a major contributor to Malaysia's economy, supporting millions of jobs. 'We recognise the right to voice opinions, but it must be done responsibly and not at the expense of national harmony. We must protect our stability to ensure the success of Visit Malaysia 2026 and the continued growth of the people's economy,' he added. The latest rally, held on Saturday at Dataran Merdeka, saw nearly 15,000 people in attendance.

Local authorities issue 14,834 compounds against foreign-owned businesses

KUALA LUMPUR: Local authorities have issued 14,834 compounds against business premises for offences, including illegal licence transfers to foreigners, since 2023, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said. He added that 2,880 premises were sealed, and 23 business licences revoked. 'The Ministry and PBTs have never allowed foreign nationals to apply for or own hawker licences, grocery stores, eateries, or car workshops,' Nga stressed. Speaking in Parliament, he emphasised that hiring foreigners under hawker licences is prohibited, as the government prioritises Malaysian traders. The enforcement aligns with existing policies like the Hawkers By-Laws, which restrict business licence applications to citizens. Nga confirmed that PBTs conduct regular inspections, especially in areas with high foreigner presence, and confiscate goods from unlicensed foreign traders. Licences are revoked for misuse, with stricter application conditions imposed to curb foreign-owned businesses. Responding to concerns about Malaysians acting as proxies for foreign spouses, Nga urged citizens to uphold the Rukun Negara principles. 'Submit evidence to the ministry for action,' he said. - Bernama
