When is the Strawberry Moon and how to see it?
Although there are sometimes more than 12 full moons in one year, there are 12 popular full moon names corresponding to each monthly full moon.
It'll be at its brightest on Wednesday evening – but how can you see it in all its glory?
And why is it known as a Strawberry Moon? Here's what you need to know about the phenomenon.
First things first – it doesn't mean that the full moon is pink – even if it can sometimes appear that way in the sky. No, the Moon does not become a giant celestial strawberry either.
Many cultures have named the full moons across the lunar calendar throughout history, such as the 'Full Wolf Moon' or the 'Full Flower Moon'.
The Strawberry Moon, like many of these lunar monikers, comes from Native American culture.
In North America, strawberry harvesting traditionally takes place in June, with the indigenous Haida people calling it the Berries Ripen Moon.
Many spiritualists and local cultures associate the Strawberry Moon with energy and renewal, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac, with the orange and pink-ish Moon also going by: The Rose Moon in European cultures, as it's when the flower blooms on the continent.
The Hot Moon as it marks the beginning of the warm summer season.
The Budding Moon of Plants and Shrubs is what the indigenous Tlingit peoples call it, as it ushers in plant growth.
The Moon When the Ducks Come Back, named by the Lakota people, as ducks return when the pale-coloured Moon shines above.
If you want to see the rare Strawberry Moon, you'll need to be out and about at the optimal time and location on Wednesday.
The sixth Moon of the year will become visible from around 10.46pm today, June 11, as the Moon rises, although it was already visible last night.
Any spot that is away from the light pollution of cities or towns will be good for stargazing and observing the phenomenon.
As the Strawberry Moon hangs lower than usual, it is likely to be visible even in London if the night is clear.
The Met Office forecast shows that the sky above London should be clear of clouds from about 8pm tonight.
The June full moon is the closest to midsummer and also the furthest away from the Sun. More Trending
But rather than being red, it will appear orange or slightly rusty red when it's close to the horizon, according to the BBC Sky at Night Magazine.
So, to the naked eye, the special moon might not appear any more red than usual, as the nickname comes from its cultural background.
The next full moon after the summer equinox will be the Buck Moon in July.

Named after North America's largest fish, the August full moon - known as the 'Sturgeon Moon', will be the last full one of summer 2025. This name originates from the large number of sturgeon fish that were typically found in North America's Great Lakes around this time of year. In the UK, it is also known as the Corn Moon, a nod to the start of the harvest season in the Northern Hemisphere when crops are abundant. What is the Sturgeon Moon? A full Moon occurs when the Earth-facing side of the Moon is fully illuminated by the Sun. Each month's full Moon is given a special nickname, and the Sturgeon Moon is the traditional name given to August's full Moon. When to see the Sturgeon Moon in UK skies For those who missed the Sturgeon Moon last night it will rise in the southeast and set in the west-southwest at around 7am on August 10. And if you miss it, there's a chance to see the full Moon rise again on Sunday night (August 10). It will rise just 10 minutes later at roughly 9.10pm, setting at around 8am the following morning. Like this summer's Strawberry Moon and Buck Moon, the Sturgeon Moon won't rise very high above the horizon, meaning it could appear bigger than usual in a phenomenon called 'Moon illusion'. An increasing number of people are reporting symptoms of 'full moon insomnia', attributing their vivid dreams, midnight awakenings, and difficulty falling asleep to the lunar cycle. And there may be some truth to these claims. Interest in lunar cycles has surged, with Google searches for this year's Sturgeon Moon increasing by 650 per cent. A recent poll conducted by Dreams found that 62 per cent of respondents believe the moon affects their sleep. Nearly half (48 per cent) confirmed that their sleep is disrupted every time there is a full moon. Additionally, 37 per cent reported having trouble falling asleep, 31 per cent experienced vivid or strange dreams, and 25 per cent woke up in the middle of the night. Dreams' sleep expert Sammy Margo said: "Multiple studies have found that during the full moon phase, people may experience shorter sleep durations, lower sleep efficiency, and reduced melatonin levels. So, while there's a strong psychological element to the full moon effect, biology may also be playing a part."

What time to see July's full moon Buck Moon in the UK
Stargazers will be in for a treat as similar to last month's Strawberry Moon, another spectacle can be spotted in the form of July's Buck Moon. Plus, there's something even more unique about this full moon, as it can be spotted in the constellation Sagittarius. The Buck Moon, July's full moon, will rise tonight (July 10) at 10.09pm BST. 'It's the best chance to see it at its brightest and fullest this year,' states astronomical telescope expert Alan Jones from 365 Astronomy. 'Because Sagittarius is close to the horizon, having a clear, unobstructed view of the southern horizon, free from trees or buildings, is essential to enjoy the moon clearly as it rises around 10pm.' The Buck Moon will lie close to the horizon and will also be the farthest full moon from the sun all year. Much like June's Strawberry Moon – the lowest-lying full moon in more than 18 years – July's Buck Moon will also sit unusually low in the sky. It is also located in the horizon-grazing constellation Sagittarius, in the middle of a star pattern that's known as the Teapot. 'When the moon is near the horizon, it can appear a bit larger than usual,' Mr Jones continues. 'At this time, the moon may also take on an orange or reddish hue, as Earth's atmosphere scatters blue light and allows warmer colours to shine through. 'Sometimes, you might even spot a halo or ring around the moon, created when moonlight passes through thin clouds or ice crystals in the sky, producing beautiful glowing patterns.' Th Buck Moon is named to represent the time of year when male deer, known as bucks, begin to grow their new antlers. For many it marked the start of the game hunting season. Other nicknames for the July full moon include the Feather Molting Moon and the Salmon Moon.
