Michelle Obama revealed a parenting move that her husband, Barack Obama, disagreed with during a recent episode of her podcast IMO With Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson.
Newsweek reached out to Barack Obama's representative via email for comment.
The Context
Barack Obama, 63, was the 44th President of the United States from 2009 until 2017. He and Michelle Obama, 61, wed in 1992 and welcomed daughters Malia Obama, 26, in 1998 and Sasha Obama, 23, in 2001. The family lived at the White House throughout his presidency.
In March, Michelle Obama announced her new podcast with her older brother, Craig Robinson. At the time, the former first lady wrote via Instagram: "Every week, Craig and I will be joined by a special guest as we try to grapple with life's biggest questions."

What To Know
On the newest episode of IMO, which was released on Wednesday, Michelle Obama and Robinson spoke with soccer star Abby Wambach and her wife, author Glennon Doyle, about the difficulties of parenting.
"Sometimes, I did overkill on the parenting of trying to be normal," Michelle Obama told listeners, before sharing that she once punished Malia Obama for "a whole semester," which Barack Obama questioned.
"It was too much, right?" she polled her guests.
"That's a lot," Wambach said. "Did she do something—like, did she murder a human?"
"No, she didn't murder a human. She did teenage stuff," Michelle Obama said. "But, you know, every time something happened and they're teenagers in the White House, I'm thinking, 'oh my God, this is a sign, they're going to be on the street; they're going to be addicts; and this is really going to mess them up.'"
The attorney added that she "put down the hammer," though it didn't initially start out as a full semester.
"First, it was a month, and then I let her off, and then she didn't make curfew or did something like that."
Michelle Obama noted that she would have "lectures" prepared, but Malia knew exactly what to say. "She understood how to just look me in the eye and go, 'You're right, mom. I don't know what got into me. You're so right.'"
The mom of two felt like she was being "punked," which is why the punishment was extended.
"Barack, he's trying to be the president but also trying to be a good parent, and he's, like, 'Yeah, whatever your mom says,' although he's looking at me, like, 'A semester?!' I was like, 'I said a semester, and I cannot go back on it.'"
Later on in the podcast, Michelle Obama said she "was wrong."
"That was too long. It didn't work, it didn't have the desired effect, but I was learning is my point."
The Chicago native added that she was in a "strange position" where she "didn't have any role models" of people with kids in high school in the White House whose father was the first Black president.
"I was kind of flying blind on this," Michelle added.
Much to the annoyance of Malia, however, Michelle said she went easier on Sasha, who was "rarely on punishment" because she learned from her mistakes.
"The broader point is that sometimes our guilt, our issues, get in the way of our parenting."

Poland Exit Polls Show Donald Trump-Backed Candidate Narrowly Ahead
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Exit polls for the Polish presidential election show populist Karol Nawrocki, who is also President Donald Trump's preferred candidate, with a narrow lead of 51 percent to 49 percent. Full results are expected later on Monday, with only 55 percent of the votes counted by early Monday morning local time. Why It Matters Right-wing parties in Europe experienced a surge in support over the past couple years, starting with Geert Wilders's victory in the 2023 Dutch parliamentary election, and accelerated by major gains in the 2024 European parliamentary elections. Trump's victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election marked a major advance for right-wing groups, which have grown emboldened and have sought to once again borrow from Trump's playbook to secure further victories, including policies and ideological lines. Sunday's election will determine whether the country continues along Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk's pro-European path or shifts toward nationalist policies reminiscent of those championed by Trump. The president and prime minister must work together to pass legislation, making their alignment key. Tusk on Friday claimed that Russian hackers had targeted the websites of ruling coalition parties, just days ahead of the election, according to the Kyiv Independent. What To Know Nawrocki, a conservative historian with no previous political experience and supported by the Law and Justice Party, went head-to-head with Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski. Key issues include judicial reforms, abortion rights, and EU relations. Trzaskowski represents the pro-European Civic Coalition, while Nawrocki is aligned with nationalist and traditionalist views. Nawrocki holds a slender lead over his rival in what experts have noted as a marked shift from an initial exit poll released just after voting ended at 9 p.m. on Sunday night. More Wojtek Radwanski/AFP via Getty Images In that poll, Trzaskowski had 50.3 percent of the vote, but the poll had a two percent margin of error, according to Politico. Trzaskowski attempted to hold that poll as a small victory, telling supporters that they would soon hear the phrase "razor-thin" everywhere as results continued to trickle in from various districts. "If everything is confirmed we will immediately get to work," Trzawkowski said. However, Nawrocki has remained defiant, telling his supporters that he will "win and save Poland!" "We will win, that difference is really so tiny," he said, as his supporters chanted "president of Poland." Nawrocki's victory would serve as a sharp rebuke from voters about Tusk's government by electing a president who could pose a major legislative hurdle to any policy aspirations the prime minister has. What People Are Saying Piotr Buras, ECFR: "Right wing and far-right candidates gathered as many as 54 percent of votes—this is the most surprising result. "The campaign in the next two weeks will be very polarizing and brutal—a confrontation of two visions of Poland: pro-EU, liberal and progressive versus nationalist, Trumpist and conservative."

Michelle Obama couldn't be more wrong about women Trump voters
I'm a pro-choice feminist — and a Democrat — who just happened to vote for Donald Trump for president. And I resent Michelle Obama's sneering, demeaning, strangely ignorant and massively sexist remarks about women, our reproductive systems and, especially, our vote. In the latest episode of the podcast, 'IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson,'' the former first lady and lefty pro-abortion activist mounted her high horse and disgracefully disparaged a woman's decision to exercise her right to choose what to do with her body. That is, when that choice is to have a baby. On the podcast she shares with her celebricat brother, the 61-year-old mother of two daughters, insanely breathed strength into the pro-life crowd by declaring bizarrely that creating life is 'the least' of what a woman's reproductive system does. Advertisement 'I attempted to make the argument on the campaign trail this past election was that there's just so much more at stake and because so many men have no idea about what women go through,' Obama said, delving treacherously close to Democratic-style word salad. 'Women's reproductive health is about our life. It's about this whole complicated reproductive system that the least of what it does is produce life.' When does a reproductive system have nothing to do with reproduction? Willful ignorance Mrs. O showed stupendously willful ignorance about her fellow ladies' inner workings. Advertisement 'It's a very important thing that it does, but you only produce life if the machine that's producing it — if you want to whittle us down to a machine — is functioning in a healthy, streamlined kind of way,' Obama added. I guess she missed that day in biology class. Speaking with OB/GYN Dr. Sharon Malone, whose husband, Eric Holder, served as attorney general under former President Barack Obama, Michelle then took aim at the male of the species. Advertisement She attacked guys who, she said, 'sit on their hands' over abortion and are choosing to 'trade out women's health for a tax break or whatever it is.'' But the crescendo came when she denounced women like me of handing the election to President Trump because — get this — we were too stupid or timid to vote for the worst candidate ever to grace a ballot, simply because she is female. In Obama's world, we voted for Trump to please men. Seriously? Advertisement 'There are a lot of men who have big chairs at their tables, there are a lot of women who vote the way their man is going to vote,'' she actually said. 'It happened in this election.' So there it is. Michelle Obama, pretend women's rights warrior, is so condescending to the fairer sex, she insults millions of people bearing XX chromosomes by claiming they were merely trying to please 'their'' man by going for Trump. Hey Michelle — sorry to stick a fork into your Trump Derangement Syndrome — but I, for one, simply voted my mind, my heart, my pocketbook and, yes, my reproductive organs. Despite Democratic hysteria, it's clear to me that the president has no intention of eliminating abortion rights throughout this country. Own opinions There also exist many other issues that concern me. These include runaway crime, the largesse afforded by the previous presidential administration to countless numbers of illegal immigrants, including violent criminals. There's also epic inflation and unchecked antisemitism on college campuses and elsewhere. There's more, but that's a start. In each case, things got so out of hand, I believed Trump had the best chance of saving this nation. Advertisement He couldn't do any worse. I'm no shrinking violet, Michelle. I believe in equal rights — for everyone. And I believe my man is entitled to his own opinions.

Trump shares unfounded conspiracy theory claiming Biden was 'executed' in 2020
President Donald Trump on Saturday night reposted a baseless claim on Truth Social that former President Joe Biden was executed in 2020 and replaced with clones or robots. The original post, made by an anonymous Truth Social user who often spreads outlandish claims, suggested that Biden was replaced with 'clones, doubles' and 'robotic engineered soulless mindless entities.' Trump published a link to the post to his nearly 10 million followers without adding any context or explanation. The original poster's account has a little more than 5,000 followers. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday explaining why Trump shared the post and whether he believes Biden was executed in 2020. Trump has frequently taken to sharing misinformation and unproven conspiracy theories over the years. He repeats false claims that he won the 2020 presidential election, which led some of his supporters to attack the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in an attempt to overturn Biden's victory. He also claimed — before he backtracked — that former President Barack Obama was not born in the United States and, during the 2024 campaign, alleged that Haitian immigrants were 'eating the pets.' All of those claims were debunked or otherwise proved false. Trump's circle, too, has spread conspiracy theories, with some of the top brass in the administration having spread misinformation about vaccines or the so-called deep state. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has repeated a debunked claim that the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine causes autism, and the FBI's director and deputy director have spread claims that the Biden administration and the 'deep state' weaponized the FBI against Trump. Biden revealed last month that he had been diagnosed with a metastatic form of an aggressive type of prostate cancer as he and his top aides were already facing mounting scrutiny about his mental acuity and physical capabilities in office and how forthcoming they had been with the country. The revelation of his cancer diagnosis initially prompted an outpouring of well-wishes from Democrats and Republicans, but that quickly shifted as Trump allies claimed Biden had hidden his cancer diagnosis. A spokesperson for Biden said at the time that he had never been diagnosed with prostate cancer before last month. Biden, since his diagnosis was made public, said Friday he felt good and joked with reporters about the allegations of his supposed mental decline in office. Trump has made host of heightened attacks against Biden in recent weeks. Trump and House Republicans have scrutinized Biden's use of an autopen to sign some pieces of legislation and executive orders, using it to call his mental state into question. Trump has gone as far as to claim that some pardons Biden signed were not valid because they had not been signed with a real pen. NBC News has reported that the White House has used autopens to create signatures for decades. This article was originally published on
