Synthetic fuels will coexist with EVs, says solar fuel maker
By instead using a solar plant in Morocco or a wind plant in Chile, Furler suggested, you could make use of electricity that would not otherwise have made it to mainland Europe to clean up transport.
Moreover, Furler claimed, such a plant could produce three times more electricity per year than its equivalent in Europe. That means you could cleanly fuel thousands of ICE cars in Europe using that electricity, rather than zero EVs – because that power cannot be transported, whereas the liquid petrol can be.
Synhelion has already partnered airline Lufthansa and Switzerland's importer for the Volkswagen Group, AMAG, to deploy its fuels in the real world.
AMAG was the first to use the company's fuel to power a car, demonstrating it in a short-wheelbase Audi Quattro.
But there remains a long road ahead until they are ready for the mass market, said Furler: 'Around 2030 to 2035, the different pathways are likely at a competitive scale, and can then be deployed rather quickly.'
He cited scaling up as the biggest challenge, because of the cost involved, and said it could take until 2050 until it's on a comparable scale to the fossil fuel industry.
There is also an issue with cost: Synhelion's fuels are currently 'five to 10 times more expensive' than fossil fuels and 'probably we will not achieve full parity".
The argument could become more compelling if fossil fuels are taxed on their carbon impact (bringing their costs up closer to synthetics fuels), said Furler, and a barrel price of around €1 (86p) per litre would make it 'a viable solution'.

Wiltshire a solar farm dumping ground, says councillor
A councillor said a rural county had become "a dumping ground for solar farms" as a 218-acre plan was discussed. Reform UK councillor Chris Brautigam also told Wiltshire Council's strategic planning committee "we've already done our bit" on meeting solar targets. He spoke as the authority turned down the Potterne Park Farm proposal, between the villages of Potterne, Urchfont, and Easterton. But council officers said the applicant can reapply after providing more information on the impact on archaeological Grubb, from the Potterne Solar Farm Project, said climate change meant the proposal "qualifies as a critical national priority". Referring to the council exceeding by 39% its 2030 solar target, Brautigam told the committee "Wiltshire is a dumping ground for solar farms. We've already done our bit."The plans also followed the rejection of a 70-acre solar farm just a mile from the 218-acre site, on 30 May. Steve Holt of Potterne Solar Action Group, a local campaign group fighting both solar farm applications, welcomed the latest refusal but wanted to see the reasons strengthened."One month ago a refusal notice was issued for One Tree Hill. This is the same landscape, the same valley, and the same ecosystem," he said. "But this proposal is three times larger, and the impact will be even greater." Arguing for the latest scheme Mr Grubb said: "This proposal is for a clean energy generator brought forward at a time when fossil fuel power stations are being phased out, electricity demand is rising sharply, and international conflicts continue to leave us exposed to volatile gas prices."We're also seeing extreme weather from climate change impacting farming and our health. This proposal clearly qualifies as a critical national priority."And farmer and landowner Philip Abbatt, explained falling crop prices, rising costs and climate change were bringing uncertainty. "The stable income from the solar farm would underpin the survival of the business and allow the next generation to continue farming with confidence in a changing world," he said. The meeting heard the site is 300 metres from a scheduled monument, the site of a medieval moated hunting officers said the applicant had "failed to provide sufficient information" on the development's potential impact on archaeological assets. But the meeting heard a re-submitted plan could be recommended for approval. Mr Grubb urged the committee to concentrate on the "specific point" on which it was rejected "rather than letting it jeopardise a proposal that is otherwise described as acceptable and will bring huge benefits".

Newcastle close to signing Forest's Anthony Elanga with improved £55m offer
Newcastle United are optimistic of striking a deal to sign the Nottingham Forest forward Anthony Elanga after submitting an improved offer worth about £55m. Last week Newcastle had a £45m bid rejected but have returned with an increased offer. Newcastle and Eddie Howe are long-term admirers of Elanga, who featured for Forest in every Premier League match last season, scoring six goals and providing 11 assists as Nuno Espírito Santo's side qualified for the Europa Conference League, returning to European competition for the first time since 1995-96. Newcastle qualified for the Champions League after finishing fifth. Newcastle are yet to finalise a deal for the 23-year-old but have been given encouragement that they are nearing an agreement. The Sweden forward joined Forest from Manchester United, who are thought to have inserted a sell-on clause in the £15m deal that took Elanga to the City Ground two years ago. He has scored 11 goals in 83 appearances for Forest, where he is under contract until 2028.

Bentley Just Made its V8s Much Angrier, Thanks To Akrapovič
By signing up I agree to the Terms of Use and acknowledge that I have read the Privacy Policy . You may unsubscribe from email communication at anytime. Bentley V8s Get A Growl When Bentley dropped the W12 engine, it robbed the world of one of the most incredible sounds in the automotive sphere. Emissions regulations have made such oversized engines all but impossible, but Bentley has a solution, of sorts. Thanks to a collaboration with Akrapovič, all V8 High Peformance Hybrid and Ultra Performance Hybrid models – Continental GT, Continental GT Convertible, and Flying Spur – now have the option of a titanium exhaust system that adds aural drama and subtracts weight. The newly launched Bentayga Speed already has an option like this, which Bentley says saves up to 22 pounds of weight compared to the standard system (depending on which model it is fitted to). Rorty New Exhaust Can Still Show Restraint As you'd expect in a six-figure luxury vehicle, this system is valved on each rear silencer so that buyers have a choice between a subtle, restrained exhaust note and a raucous one. The adaptive system is connected to the car's ECU so that Sport mode uncorks the exhaust automatically, which Bentley says produces 'a thrilling, full-throated rasp under hard acceleration and distinctive burbles on overrun.' The new exhaust is also said to improve the sound on start-up and exhibits arrange of tones throughout the rev range, 'from a commanding V8 roar to a smooth, high-frequency sound.' Naturally, the engineers also focused on heat resistance, so this system is a mix of titanium and 'special super alloys.' Pure titanium, as good as it looks and sounds, doesn't deal with sustained high temperatures very well. Akra Exhaust Looks The Part The exhaust system is finished with a quartet of tips, the innermost of which bear the Bentley name, while the outers call attention to Akrapovič. The black script appears atop a sandblasted and coated scratch-resistant brass-colored matte surface, which looks very similar to the finish of the exhaust created for the Continental Speed W12 back in 2021, and we have to admit that the Slovenian company's trademark hue adds a touch of class (not that any Bentley is lacking in that regard). Pricing has not been announced, but this is the company that created an all-new type of exhaust for the Koenigsegg Regera, so it won't be cheap. For those with the means, the new Akrapovič exhaust can be ordered when commissioning a new Bentley or retrofitted after delivery has been taken. For those of us with shallower pockets, Akrapovič also provides systems for the Golf GTI Edition 50 and other special-edition VWs, as well as BMW M cars, AMGs, and more.
