Narmada settlements to be brought under respective gram panchayats

The Hindua day ago
The Gujarat government has finalised regulations to merge settlements under the Sardar Sarovar Punarvasvat Agency (SSPA) with the respective gram panchayats.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has approved the proposal, paving the way for integrating 127 Narmada rehabilitation settlements – housing people displaced by the Sardar Sarovar dam – located across 26 taluks in eight districts with the gram panchayats concerned, officials said on Monday (July 14, 2025).

The move is set to benefit settlements in Ahmedabad Rural, Vadodara, Bharuch, Kheda, Panchmahal, Narmada, Chhota Udepur, and Mahisagar districts. Under the approved framework, the gram panchayats will now assume responsibility for key civic infrastructure and services in these settlements, including drinking water, internal and approach roads, streetlights, electricity bills, rainwater drainage, and general maintenance of public amenities.
Better access
The Department of Panchayat, Rural Housing and Rural Development, which presented the integration work plan, stated that the merger process is expected to be completed within two months. Once merged, residents of the settlements will be able to access welfare schemes through their respective gram panchayats as per existing norms, significantly improving their access to public services, officials said.
While the SSPA will retain ownership of unallocated plots in the settlements, all relevant records will be transferred to the gram panchayats. Additionally, schools, anganwadis, and health centres in the settlements will be handed over to the relevant departments, the government said.
Voting rights and representation of settlement residents will be ensured in accordance with the existing government provisions. 'The gram panchayats will also be empowered to assess properties and collect applicable taxes and levies under the Gujarat Panchayats Act, 1993,' they said
The government has clarified that these rules will serve as the standard for future integration of the remaining SSPA settlements. A formal resolution to this effect has been issued by the Department of Panchayat, Rural Housing and Rural Development under the guidance of Mr. Patel.

NCP warns two Kerala MLAs to quit or face disqualification over anti-party activities

1 2 T'puram/Kottayam: NCP national working president Praful Patel has sent a letter to its two MLAs in Kerala who "contested on the party symbol but had been engaging in anti-party activities" to quit the posts or face disqualification under the provisions of the Peoples Representation Act and Anti-Defection Law. In a letter sent to the party's state president and Kuttanad MLA Thomas K Thomas, Patel, who is the working president of the NCP Ajit Pawar faction, said both Thomas and forest minister A K Saseendran representing Elathur constituency, were suspended from the party for six years for breaching party discipline. Patel stated that Thomas had not been attending party meetings either. "It has also come to the notice of the national leadership that Thomas has taken over as the state president of another party," Patel said. NCP's Kerala faction is supporting the Sharad Pawar faction of the NCP. However, the party symbol, clock, has been allotted to the Ajit faction. Hence, Patel issued the warning to the party MLAs now. But both MLAs made it clear that they would stick with Sharad Pawar and could not be disqualified. Thomas said the majority of workers in the state also are aligned with the NCP Sharad Pawar faction. Therefore, it is not clear what the basis of the letter is, he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pernas e tornozelos inchados? Sharad Pawar and Supriya contested on the 'clock' symbol. "A disciplinary action now against us, which was not initiated against them, is baseless," Thomas said. He also said that according to the party rules, there was no place for the working president. He also said that the letter had no basis as the case was under the consideration of the Supreme Court. Saseendran said Patel's letter would not be considered by the state unit, which has always been working as per the party's constitution. The ruling LDF has already been facing trouble with another front partner JD(S), which has two members including state electricity minister K Krishnankutty in the assembly. JD(S), led by H D Deve Gowda, is currently an ally of the ruling NDA at Centre, something opposition leader V D Satheesan has questioned.

Gujarat Chief Minister reviews road and bridge repairs through CM dashboard video wall

Gandhinagar: Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Tuesday initiated an intensive review of the state-wide roads and bridges, damaged by heavy monsoon rains. He reviewed the ongoing repair works of roads and bridges across the state through the video wall of the CM Dashboard. While monitoring the repair work, the Chief Minister instructed the officials to adopt a proactive approach to road repairs and asked them to ensure that the restoration of traffic movement and redressal of the citizens' complaints is prioritised. Warning against any lapses or negligence, the Chief Minister directed the engineers and officials to ensure that no complaint, however small, remains unresolved and that repair works are prioritised to prevent the public from facing any inconvenience. He said that all citizen complaints received through the Roads and Buildings Department's 24x7 control room, the 'GujMarg' mobile app, municipal apps, WhatsApp, websites, helpline numbers, City Civic Centres, and Command & Control Centres must be addressed promptly and satisfactorily, with active monitoring by the concerned officials to ensure swift resolution. The Chief Minister further directed that all ongoing repair works should be closely monitored through field visits by officers, local authorities, and district administrations. Principal Secretary of Urban Development M. Thennarasan, sharing information on complaint redressal, said that out of 15,424 complaints received from metropolitan cities, 12,023 have been successfully resolved. Toll collection suspended on 28 km stretch of Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway from today

Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], July 15 (ANI): The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the temporary suspension of toll collection on a 28.71 km stretch of the Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway (NH-754K), owing to essential repair work currently underway. This stretch falls under Package-4 of the Sanchore-Santalpur section of the expressway, a key infrastructure link being developed under the ambitious Bharatmala Pariyojana. According to the official statement, the toll suspension will be effective from 8:00 AM on July 15 and will remain in place until the completion of the ongoing rectification work. This decision has been taken in the larger public interest to ensure commuter safety and convenience during the repair phase. The 125 km corridor from Sanchore in Rajasthan to Santalpur in Gujarat's Patan district forms a vital segment of the economic corridor that aims to significantly improve inter-state connectivity across India's northern and eastern regions. The Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway also plays a strategic role in enhancing access to major ports such as Jamnagar, Kandla, and Mundra, thereby strengthening India's international trade logistics and reducing travel time for freight movement across the country. Earlier on July 7, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has directed that all damage to highways, as well as rural and urban roads, caused by heavy monsoon rains, be repaired on a priority basis and restored to their original condition without delay, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said in a press release. In a high-level meeting, the Chief Minister emphasised that road networks, crucial for development and daily public transportation, must not remain damaged due to heavy rainfall, and that immediate repairs should be undertaken to ensure their continued operation. He held a meeting in Gandhinagar with senior officials from the relevant departments to review the current status of national highways, state highways, and roads under the purview of panchayats in rural areas, towns, and metropolitan cities. In the meeting, CM Bhupendra Patel stated that road and bridge repairs, including patchwork, should not be delayed awaiting the end of rainfall. He emphasised that not a single day with no or minimal rainfall should go to waste, and that repair work must continue even on holidays in the interest of the public. He further stated that in cases where damage occurs or repairs are required within the Defect Liability Period, the responsibility must be fixed on the contractor, and appropriate action should be taken. He also stressed the importance of ensuring the quality of all repair and construction works. (ANI)
