Toll collection suspended on 28 km stretch of Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway from today
According to the official statement, the toll suspension will be effective from 8:00 AM on July 15 and will remain in place until the completion of the ongoing rectification work. This decision has been taken in the larger public interest to ensure commuter safety and convenience during the repair phase.
The 125 km corridor from Sanchore in Rajasthan to Santalpur in Gujarat's Patan district forms a vital segment of the economic corridor that aims to significantly improve inter-state connectivity across India's northern and eastern regions.
The Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway also plays a strategic role in enhancing access to major ports such as Jamnagar, Kandla, and Mundra, thereby strengthening India's international trade logistics and reducing travel time for freight movement across the country.
Earlier on July 7, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has directed that all damage to highways, as well as rural and urban roads, caused by heavy monsoon rains, be repaired on a priority basis and restored to their original condition without delay, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said in a press release.
In a high-level meeting, the Chief Minister emphasised that road networks, crucial for development and daily public transportation, must not remain damaged due to heavy rainfall, and that immediate repairs should be undertaken to ensure their continued operation. He held a meeting in Gandhinagar with senior officials from the relevant departments to review the current status of national highways, state highways, and roads under the purview of panchayats in rural areas, towns, and metropolitan cities.
In the meeting, CM Bhupendra Patel stated that road and bridge repairs, including patchwork, should not be delayed awaiting the end of rainfall. He emphasised that not a single day with no or minimal rainfall should go to waste, and that repair work must continue even on holidays in the interest of the public. He further stated that in cases where damage occurs or repairs are required within the Defect Liability Period, the responsibility must be fixed on the contractor, and appropriate action should be taken. He also stressed the importance of ensuring the quality of all repair and construction works. (ANI)

Protests in Assam on August 8 against state govt's Hindu Bangladeshi decision
ANI Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Guwahati: The All-Assam Students' Union (AASU) has announced a protest on August 8 against the state government's directive to the Foreigners' Tribunal (FT) to withdraw cases pending in Tribunals against illegal Hindu Bangladesh immigrants. The students' union will burn copies of the government's directive across all district headquarters on Friday. AASU President Utpal Sarma said, 'This is a betrayal of the people of Assam. The government cannot selectively protect illegal immigrants based on religion. There must be no religious affiliation in determining illegality.' Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Debabrata Saikia has asked all political parties and civil society groups to resist what he described as the state government's attempts to 'nullify the Assam Accord'. Referring to government's July-17 directive asking district authorities and Foreigners' Tribunals to drop cases against six religious communities - Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and Parsis, Saikia said that it contradicts the cut-off date of March 24, 1971, as stipulated in Assam Accord. The order from the state government stated, 'The DCs and Sr. SPs to take a review of the status of all the Foreigners (Pakistani/ Bangladeshi/ Rohingya). As per the amendments made to the Citizenship Act, the FTs, are, not supposed to pursue cases of foreigners belonging to the six specified communities (Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, Sikh, Parsi and Jain communities) who had entered Assam on or prior to 31.12.2014. It was suggested to stop all such cases., In this regard, the district Commissioner and the Senior SPs should immediately convey a meeting with their respective FT member end also reviews the development periodically and submit the action taken report to this department." It added, 'However, such foreigners should be encouraged and supported for applying for Indian citizenship as per provisions of Citizenship Amendment Act. The Government of Assam had issued clear cut instructions for withdrawal of all cases filed against people belonging to Gorkha and Koch Rajbongshi communities, this should be complied with forthwith. Assam had witnessed violent protests in 2019 and early 2020 after Parliament passed the CAA, which makes minority communities such as Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan eligible to apply for Indian citizenship. Five people were killed in the protests. Assam Accord inked after six yearlong foreigners' movement (1979-1985) provides that foreigners who entered the state after the cut-off date of March 24, 1971, irrespective of their religious affiliation must be deported.

Vacancy levels at historic lows, expected to decline further by 2026
New Delhi [India] August 7 (ANI): Vacancy levels, already at historic lows, are expected to decline even further, according to a recent report by rating agency ICRA. From 15.5 per cent in March 2024, vacancy dropped to 13.9 per cent in March 2025 and is projected to fall to 13.0-13.5 per cent by March 2026, reflecting strong fundamentals and consistent demand. 'The net absorption stood at record-high levels of 65 million square feet (msf) in FY2025," said Abhishek Lahoti, assistant vice president and sector head, corporate ratings, ICRA. 'The slowdown in leasing from global IT firms has been compensated handsomely by the GCCs and the BFSI segments, which ICRA expects will continue to dominate leasing activity." India's commercial office market is set to remain resilient in FY2026, with demand expected to stay at record-high levels seen in the previous year. The top six cities–Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), and Pune–are projected to see robust leasing activity, primarily driven by Global Capability Centres (GCCs), BFSI institutions, flex-space operators, and domestic IT-BPM firms. In FY2025, net absorption across these key markets touched 65 msf, marking a 14 per cent year-on-year increase and surpassing the supply of 58 msf. The momentum appears to be holding steady in the first quarter of FY2026 as well, with 17 msf already absorbed, nearly on par with the 17.7 msf of new supply. As of June 30, 2025, the total Grade A office stock across the six cities stood at approximately 1,030 msf. Bengaluru leads the pack with the highest share at 26 per cent, followed by Delhi-NCR and MMR. City-level vacancy projections also point to a steady outlook. Bengaluru is set to see a dip from 9.8 per cent to 9.0-9.5 per cent with 16.5 msf of new supply, while Chennai is expected to maintain a stable vacancy at 9.0-9.5 per cent. Delhi-NCR and Hyderabad are projected to ease slightly, while MMR and Pune also anticipate a decline, signaling consistent net absorption. On the financial front, ICRA expects the credit profile of major office space developers to remain stable. 'The leverage metrics of the players as measured by debt/NOI is expected to improve to 5.0x-5.5x as of March 2026, from 6.0x in FY2025," Lahoti added. Improved rental income and a favourable interest rate environment are also expected to push debt service coverage ratios to a healthy 1.35x-1.40x in FY2026.
