Zawya09-04-2025
Abu Dhabi, UAE, At AIM Congress 2025, the Africa Regional Forum under the theme 'From Zones to Impact: African SEZs Reimagined' gathered key voices to discuss the evolution of SEZs into innovation-driven, inclusive, and integrated economic ecosystems
Laura Paez, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), noted Africa's SEZs have grown from 20 in the 1990s to over 237 by 2020, but many face challenges in diversification and infrastructure.
'There are more than 200 SEZs currently operational across the continent, with varying levels of success. The emerging SEZ 2.0 model emphasizes technology, regional integration, and local value creation aligned with development goals,' said Paez.
Jasveer Singh, Cluster Director at Arise IIP, emphasized sustainable industrialization through public-private partnerships.
'We focus on identifying industrial gaps and enabling value-added production at scale through public-private partnerships. Our zones are not just industrial parks — they are platforms for inclusive economic transformation,' said Singh.
Gilbert Ewehmeh, Continental Coordinator, Accelerate Africa, called for SEZ models that include SMEs and align with the AfCFTA.
'The standalone model is giving way to interconnected industrial ecosystems that support the full value chain, from raw materials to finished goods. This is the future of SEZs in Africa,' he stated.
Dr. Manuel Francisco Pedro, Chairman, Luanda-Bengo SEZ, Angola, stressed stronger governance and infrastructure.
'SEZs must be linked to AfCFTA goals to drive intra-African trade, harmonize standards, and create a coherent investment climate. Institutional support and strong governance are key,' said Dr. Pedro.

'We are building the infrastructure to support future urban innovation through 6G and collaborative R&D,' said Sato.
Hiroshi Miura, Senior Manager, NTT DATA Group, presented the IOWN technology's role in global data transmission.
'IOWN enables high bandwidth and low latency through light-based data transfer—poised to transform sectors like finance and health,' Miura said.
Takaaki Nakamura, Director, NIFCO Inc., emphasized sustainable manufacturing and NIFCO's wide product reach.
'You cannot go more than one meter in Japan without being next to a NIFCO product,' Nakamura remarked.
Rashid Al Teneiji, Director of International Business Development, UAE Ministry of Economy, invited deeper UAE-Japan collaboration.
'I hope today's dialogue serves as a launchpad for deeper cooperation between Japan and the UAE,' he said.

Bank of Algeria joins Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) network, accelerating financial integration in Africa as Algeria prepares to host Intra-African Trade Fair 2025 (IATF2025)

The Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) launched by African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) ( in collaboration with the African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, has officially welcomed the Bank of Algeria into its growing network. Algeria now becomes the 18th country of presence for PAPSS, marking a significant step in advancing Africa's journey towards deeper financial integration. This development is expected to further support cross-border payments and enhance the regulatory framework governing intra-African trade. Algeria's accession to PAPSS comes at a moment when the nation prepares to host the Intra-African Trade Fair 2025 (IATF2025) from 4th to 10th September 2025 in Algiers. This premier event, another flagship initiative of Afreximbank, is projected to bring together over 35,000 participants from more than 140 countries, creating an unrivalled platform for business, investment, and the realization of the AfCFTA vision. Mike Ogbalu III, Chief Executive Officer of PAPSS, celebrated this landmark event, stating: 'We are delighted to welcome the Bank of Algeria to the PAPSS network. Algeria's entry not only strengthens our presence in North Africa but also demonstrates the continent's rising confidence in our system as the engine for Africa's payment transformation. So far, PAPSS has reduced intra-Africa cross-border transaction costs among participating countries and enabled savings of up to 27% for end users, while helping banks experience transaction volume surges of over 1000% through digital channels integration. As our network grows, we're making African payments faster, more affordable, and accessible, catalysing economic growth and unlocking new opportunities for businesses and communities across Africa.' Mohamed Benbahane, Deputy Governor of Bank of Algeria, remarked: "In support of Algeria's commitment to contribute to accelerating African economic integration, the Bank of Algeria has joined the Pan-African Payments and Settlement System (PAPSS). This membership, which aims in particular to improve payment efficiency and facilitate intra-African trade, represents an essential lever for strengthening Algeria's role within the African financial ecosystem and supporting sustainable economic development in Africa." Since its debut in West Africa in 2022, PAPSS has rapidly expanded its reach, with significant momentum in Northern Africa, with Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco, and now Algeria on board. Today, PAPSS connects 18 countries across four African regions, more than 150 commercial banks, and 14 switches, evidence of growing trust in a solution that is revolutionizing how money moves within Africa and beyond. Distributed by APO Group on behalf of Afreximbank. About PAPSS: The Pan-African Payment and Settlement System – PAPSS is a centralised Financial Market Infrastructure that enables the efficient flow of money securely across African borders, minimising risk and contributing to financial integration across the regions. PAPSS collaborates with African central banks to offer payment and settlement solutions that commercial banks and licensed payment service providers (switches, fintechs, aggregators, etc.) across the continent can connect to, making these services accessible to the public. To date, PAPSS has developed and launched 3 payment solutions: PAPSS Instant Payment System (IPS), PAPSS African Currency Marketplace (PACM), and the PAPSSCARD. Afreximbank and the African Union ('AU') first announced PAPSS at the Twelfth Extraordinary Summit of the African Union held on July 7, 2019, in Niamey, Niger Republic, therefore adopting PAPSS as a key instrument for the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA). Further, in its thirteenth (13th) extraordinary session, held on December 5, 2020, the assembly of the African Union directed Afreximbank and the AfCFTA secretariat to finalise, among others, work on the Pan-African Payments and Settlements System (PAPSS). The 35th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the AU further directed the AfCFTA and Afreximbank to deploy the system to cover the entire continent. PAPSS was officially launched in Accra, Ghana, on January 13, 2022, thus making it available for use by the public.

Nisus Finance and BNW partner on Dh150 million ready-to-occupy residential project in JVC

Nisus Finance Investment Consultancy FZCO (NiFCO Dubai), a fully owned subsidiary of Nisus Finance Services Co Limited (NiFCO), announced a strategic partnership with the UAE's leading developer BNW Developments that is set to redefine the real estate experience for end-users and investors alike. NiFCO Dubai has launched the Nisus High Yield Growth Fund Closed-Ended IC, a Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) registered property fund, incorporated under the laws of the DIFC, and an incorporated cell of Gateway ICC Limited with the Gateway Investment Management Services (DIFC) Limited as the Fund Manager. The Fund through a DIFC special purpose vehicle – NiFCO Holding 02 Ltd – acquired a premium residential building in District 18 of Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC), measuring approximately 120,000 square feet and comprising 143 residential apartments and 3 retail units. This building, called Esplora, is spread over G+3P+16 floors and has well-appointed 48 studios, 63 one-bedroom apartments and 32 two-bedroom apartments as well as three retail units. As part of the partnership, BNW Developments and NiFCO Holding 02 Ltd have incorporated a new entity called BNW NiFCO Buying and Selling Real Estate LLC that will handle the development, marketing and sale of the residential tower at JVC, recently acquired by NiFCO Dubai. As per the agreement, the asset will now be professionally marketed and sold by BNW Developments, bringing together regulated capital discipline and on-ground market expertise. The partnership combines NiFCO Dubai's expertise in deploying capital to spearhead project development and sale with BNW Developments' proven expertise in project management, development, marketing and sales – creating a combined strength that is able to deliver higher and faster yields that will lead the property development and management in the UAE. On its part, BNW is not just going to acquire the building and white label it, but BNW will embed its essence into this project and future projects elevating the overall living experience. The partnership marks a new consumer-first collaboration model in the UAE's real estate landscape — focused on governance-backed, move-in-ready homes that offer immediate value and quality lifestyle to middle-income families. As Dubai's real estate market matures further, this partnership aims to move beyond the off-plan status quo, focusing on ready-to-use, well-maintained homes tailored for the mid-income segment. With additional assets in the pipeline, this model is set to scale and support a broader $1 billion real estate vision. 'This new partnership creates an important roadmap to accelerate growth in the real estate sector — by infusing capital into the industry, easing pressure on developers to focus on development and delivery. It also enables sales and marketing leaders such as BNW Developments to move ready inventory swiftly to buyers and investors. In turn, this will boost the pace of activity and support broader economic growth,' said Amit Goenka, Chairman and Managing Director of Nisus Finance Group (NiFCO). Ankur Aggarwal, Founder and Chairman of BNW Developments, added, 'We are pleased to partner with Nisus Finance, which is supporting the real estate sector with fresh capital to ensure growth. Our expertise in marketing and sales will drive strong uptake of these projects. Nisus Finance is currently evaluating $200 million (Dh730 million) worth of additional assets for acquisition and resale in the market. The firm is also investing additional capital to enhance the built environment, upgrading common areas with modern aesthetics and improved amenities—comparable to the latest off-plan assets. This partnership also ensures timely project completion — at a time when only 45 percent of projects are delivered on time, and 55 percent face delays due to funding or other constraints. Secondary sales offered by NiFCO will also help meet the underserved demand while delivering uplifted value. Vivek Anand Oberoi, Managing Director and Co-Founder of BNW Developments, said, 'BNW Developments has developed innovative ideas in development partnership, finance and investment into UAE's real estate market that are changing the overall real estate financing business and accelerating the pace of developments.

South Africa: Embassies Business Fair and Conference 2025 to fast-track Africa's global economic integration

In a time where diplomacy and business must work hand-in-hand to shape inclusive and sustainable economies, the second edition of the Embassies Business Fair & Conference is set to return with greater impact and ambition. Taking place from 8 to 9 September 2025 at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria, this high-level gathering follows its successful debut in 2024, which was strategically aligned with Africa's first-ever G20 Summit. Sihle Dube, event organiser, underscores the urgency of the moment: "The Embassies Business Fair & Conference is more than an event, it's a catalyst for rewriting Africa's economic narrative. By turning diplomatic missions into active trade bridges, we're unlocking tangible opportunities for local businesses to compete globally." This year's edition will unfold under the theme Direct business exchange amongst embassies: Meet suppliers, manufacturers and distributors – shaping the future global economic impact. The event positions embassies not merely as diplomatic institutions but as dynamic gateways to investment, innovation, and international trade. With over 40 embassies, 50+ local and international buyers, and $20m in projected funding anticipated, the fair promises to be Africa's leading platform for economic diplomacy. "Our 2025 target is to move beyond dialogue and into deals. With AfCFTA as our backbone, we're designing sessions where contracts are signed, partnerships are sealed, and SMEs gain direct access to markets that were once out of reach." Dube adds. The conference will feature focused discussions and deal-making opportunities across priority sectors, including agriculture, tourism and hospitality, education, creative industries, manufacturing and industrialisation, ICT and innovation, healthcare, automotive, and SMMEs/MSMEs. Participants can expect an immersive experience of high-level talks, investment pitches, sector-specific workshops, and B2B and B2G matchmaking sessions designed to foster direct engagement and sustainable partnerships. More than a networking space, the fair serves as a deal-exchange arena where over 25 cross-border projects will be pitched, and 20+ women- and youth-led cooperatives will be spotlighted for funding and scaling opportunities. As a unique platform enabling business-to-business (B2B), business-to-government (B2G), embassy-to-embassy (E2E), and embassy-to-government (E2G) connections, the event is strategically designed to fast-track economic collaboration across borders. Importantly, the fair contributes meaningfully to advancing the G20's vision of inclusive global growth by creating access to market linkages, highlighting fair trade practices, and enhancing opportunities for African businesses to tap into international supply chains. Delegates will also explore resolutions to global trade challenges, the evolving role of embassies in economic development, and strategies for inclusive industrialisation. With a specific focus on building transactional bridges, the platform is expected to unlock entry into 15+ international markets, promote the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) goals, and create real pathways for import-export growth. It is also a significant opportunity for investors, trade envoys, SMEs, policymakers, and diplomats to connect, collaborate and capitalise on a world of shared business possibilities.
