Liverpool role reversed after Alexander Isak's latest move in transfer chase

Yahoo5 days ago
The last time Liverpool were on a pre-season tour of Hong Kong, the wantaway player citing injuries and hankering for a move was their own in Philippe Coutinho, who was desperate to force through a transfer to Barcelona.
Flash forward eight years and as the Reds are put through their paces in the Far East once more, it is Alexander Isak whose name is making headlines where the Premier League holders are now concerned.
Having sounded out Isak's availability earlier this summer, an adamant Newcastle were insistent that their star striker was simply not for sale. It's difficult to believe such a clandestine enquiry, which was apparently made earlier this month, was not done without a fair idea of the Sweden international's willingness to move to Anfield, however, should the Magpies have entertained the possibility of a fee upwards of £120m.

How much appetite and ability Liverpool have now to resume their fledgling pursuit of the gifted frontman on the back of the latest developments is the major question that, for now at least, lingers on unanswered.
Having committed the thick end of £300m on seven new arrivals already this summer, the idea of breaking the British transfer record for Isak seems faintly fanciful for a club who have, rightly or wrongly, developed a reputation as cautious and conservative during the player trading months.
This summer, though, sees Liverpool firmly in uncharted territory. A free-wheeling June already made this window the most expensive in club history before a further £79m was committed to prise Hugo Ekitike away from Eintracht Frankfurt this week.
It had initially looked as though Ekitike was something of a pivot after the hands-off message about Isak but could both yet join the frontline department at Anfield this summer?
For Liverpool to hurtle through the £400m barrier this summer, however, those drunk on transfer discourse might have to sober themselves and factor sales into the equation. A lot will depend on the movements of those interested in the likes of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez in that sense.
Liverpool are braced for further contact from Bayern Munich having turned down a bid shy of £60m recently and while the Colombia international is not formally in the shop window, Diaz is determined to increase his bottom line and feels he has to move away from Anfield to do just that, with the champions not entertaining talks of a new deal as things stand.
Despite the reluctance to offload Diaz, though, the feeling persists that a deal may be struck if Bayern - or other interested parties - offer a fee that is difficult to refuse on Merseyside. That is a subplot that is expected to ramp up in the coming days as the Bundesliga champions mull over their next play.
For Nunez, Napoli had been frontrunners but talk of a move to the Serie A champions has quietened in recent days, while claims of Saudi Pro League interest lingers in the background. Al-Hilal made an advance for the Uruguay striker in January but have yet to reignite their interest.
It seems impossible that any move for Isak will be made while Liverpool have their current crop of options available to them but the agitation being shown currently might be enough to quicken the Reds' pulse and kickstart some movement up top.
With three years left on his contract at St James' Park, Newcastle might justifiably adopt a relaxed stance over the developments of recent days. Their insistence that their star man is not available has merit but there is no escaping that it's been a tortuous summer for Eddie Howe and his backroom staff as they have struggled to land target after target, including Ekitike, who Liverpool initially sounded out about a deal way back in January.
Liam Delap, Bryan Mbuemo and Dean Huijsen were all wanted at various points, while Chelsea were able to steal a march on land Joao Pedro from under their noses also. A deal for goalkeeper James Trafford also looks no closer with Manchester City said to be leading that particular race. Benjamin Sekso, of RB Leipzig, is now reportedly a target as the club look to contemplate life without Isak through gritted teeth.
A British-record fee for a player who is seeking pastures new and already appears to have downed tools would go a long way towards rectifying a dreadful few weeks off the pitch for a club who had designs on significantly bolstering their squad for another crack at the Champions League this coming campaign.
However Newcastle choose to deal with the internal strife overshadowing their pre-season plans, though, there is little denying that the ball has been firmly volleyed into Liverpool's court. What happens next will be fascinating.

Luis Diaz Shares Emotional Farewell Message After Sealing Move to Bayern Munich

Luis Diaz Bids Emotional Farewell to Liverpool With Poignant Message Departure Marked by Genuine Emotion As Liverpool began their pre-season preparations in Yokohama, a message from 5,900 miles away brought a wave of emotion to the fanbase. Luis Diaz, now officially a Bayern Munich player following his £65.5 million transfer, used the moment to say goodbye in a message that echoed with sincerity and heart. Posting on Instagram just as Arne Slot's side were stepping onto the pitch in Japan, the Colombian international offered words that resonated with everyone connected to the club. His farewell was not scripted nor manufactured. It was the expression of a player who fully embraced Liverpool and its people. 'Three-years-and-a-half that I'll treasure forever. I arrived with all the dreams in the world, and I am leaving proud of everything we achieved together,' he wrote. Photo: IMAGO Legacy Built on Commitment and Class Signed from Porto in January 2022, Diaz swiftly became one of Liverpool's most reliable performers. He lifted the League Cup, FA Cup and most recently, the Premier League, under new manager Arne Slot. His tally of 17 goals in 2024/25 underlined both his productivity and importance, even as competition on the left wing intensified. There were stretches where Cody Gakpo was preferred, but Diaz never withdrew. Instead, he remained the embodiment of commitment, energy and flair. His departure was always going to feel significant, but it is his final words that truly underline what he meant to the club. Farewell Carries Tribute to Jota In a particularly moving moment, Diaz honoured former teammate Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away earlier this year. His tribute offered a glimpse into the deep bonds that existed within the squad. 'It would have been the perfect goodbye if we hadn't lost one of ours in such a tragic way,' Diaz wrote. 'As I said, and I repeat, I carry everyone with me in my heart, but one of them in particular: Diogo. I will never forget him. We will never forget him.' That sentiment will not be lost on the Liverpool dressing room or supporters. Diaz's message reinforces that football is far more than contracts and transfers. It is about people, connection and memory. Instagram: @luisdiaz19_ What Comes Next for Club and Player With Hugo Ekitike now part of Liverpool's squad and further interest in signing Alexander Isak, the competition for attacking places was always likely to increase. The timing of Diaz's departure, then, is as practical as it is emotional. Yet it does not make it any easier to accept. The player who arrived with ambition now leaves with medals and memories, not just for himself but for those he played alongside. Now in Bavaria, Diaz starts a new chapter with Bayern Munich. But his parting words will remain etched in Liverpool's modern story. His humility, empathy and passion made him a favourite. His farewell message confirms he will be remembered with affection and respect.

Real Madrid want to use Florian Wirtz in Rodrygo deal

Liverpool cool interest in Rodrygo Rodrygo, 24, is being lined up for a sale by Real Madrid during this transfer window. The two-time Champions League winner is under contract until 2029 - but is set to be offloaded by new coach Xabi Alonso. Tottenham appear to be now in the lead for the Brazil international - with Liverpool's interest said to be cooling. With Cody Gakpo and Rio Ngumoha as left-wing options - not to mention Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike - Liverpool are well stocked in the position. While Rodrygo is a great player in his own right the deal just wouldn't make sense on a financial level for the Reds. Rodrygo's exorbitant costs For one, there's the wages. The latest reports indicate that Rodrygo would command around €400k per week - parity with Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah. And then there's the €100m transfer fee - which Liverpool may have inadvertently help set. That's according to a new report in Defensa Central, which claims Real Madrid are USING Wirtz's fee to set the price for Rodrygo. © IMAGO - Rodrygo Liverpool Madrid use Wirtz valuation to set Rodrygo price 'If they paid 140 million for him… Rodrygo can't cost less than 100,' Defensa Central quotes a Real Madrid source as saying. Liverpool have acquired a player on the up - coveted by all the biggest teams in Europe including Madrid and Manchester City. Rodrygo on the other hand would cost MORE in wages and Madrid clearly feel he is already on the wane. Wirtz is far more of a sure thing than Rodrygo at this stage of their respective careers. Try as they like, Madrid are simply not going to convince Liverpool to pay €100m for a cast-off.

Liverpool ready to strike deal after €60m price drop

Liverpool are in position to strike a deal after a dramatic €60m price drop. The Reds are as busy as can be. Liverpool have been busier than any team in this transfer window. They've signed several elite players already, while losing a few, too. Shop the LFC Store LFC Kits Shop Now LFC x New Era Shop Now LFC Signed Merch Shop Now LFC x Titleist Shop Now Florian Wirtz is the headline arrival, joining Liverpool for a club-record fee. Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez followed him as new full-backs. Hugo Ekitike has also moved to Anfield in a big-money move that sees him boost competition up top. Of course, everyone hopes Alexander Isak joins him in that. Trent Alexander-Arnold is the biggest name to leave - he's signed for Real Madrid. Jarell Quansah and Caoimhin Kelleher have also left the club, while Luis Diaz became one of the biggest sales in Liverpool's history this week as he signed for Bayern Munich. And now Liverpool are ready to agree another sale - for a cut-price fee. Federico Chiesa on the transfer list Sport Mediaset reports that Liverpool are firmly looking to sell Federico Chiesa. This is under one year since signing him from Juventus for a fee just shy of €15m all-in. The claim here is that Chiesa is available for just €10m - an actual loss for Liverpool on his transfer fee. More dramatically, it means a player once valued at €70m has suffered a €60m decrease in what are supposed to be his prime years. The reality is that Chiesa didn't get a fair go at it with Liverpool. His lack of fitness over the first half of the season made things difficult, while the squad's other wingers kept performing at an incredible level.
