1 in 3 Goa taxis now local app-based as state bars outside aggregators
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant's recent announcement that his government will not allow cab aggregators from outside Goa has raised hopes for the local app-based mobility platforms, which have been in the market for some time now.
As per government figures, out of the total 12,000 tourist taxis operating in the state, 5,000 are on board the app-based platforms, mostly with two companies -- Goa Miles and Goa Taxi App.
The Goa Miles alone has a fleet of 4,000-odd taxis on board.
Allaying the apprehensions raised by local tourist taxi drivers over the Goa Transport Aggregators Guidelines 2025, CM Sawant on Friday said cab aggregators from outside will not be allowed in the state.
The draft guidelines were issued on May 20. The last date to give suggestions and raise objections is June 30.
Goa Miles Chief Executive Officer Utkarsh Dabhade told PTI that their service, which is affiliated to the Goa Tourism Development Corporation, was introduced seven years ago.
"Since the introduction of the app-based service, we have been receiving good response from tourists and locals alike," he said.
On an average, the Goa Miles fleet transports 15,000 passengers daily, of whom 85 per cent are tourists and 15 per cent local travellers, Dabhade said.
He said their services are available across the state, majorly at both the airports - Manohar International Airport at Mopa (in North Goa) and the international airport at Dabolim (South Goa).
The service has been completely a Goan brand with 100 per cent of the staff, including taxi owners, from the state, he said.
The state-run Goa Taxi App has been active for the last two years with more than 1,000 taxis on board the platform.
The service, having been introduced by the state government, is completely tourist-friendly with regards to rates and other facilities, a senior Goa Taxi App official said.
It would be beneficial for all the tourist taxi owners to get onboard the app-based service to get better business and also other facilities, he added.

The policy objectives are to nurture an environment that encourages innovation, risk-taking, and entrepreneurial thinking. It actively supports startups focused on pioneering products, processes, or services and provides startups with access to essential resources, including mentorship, networking, and investment opportunities. 'This policy was crucial for promoting startups and also for creating a robust startup ecosystem,' the cabinet said. There are currently 279 startups certified by the state, and incentives amounting to Rs 4 crore have been disbursed for startups against various schemes under the policy. The policy also intends the proliferation of startups and the unleashing of economic opportunities across Goa. In no-Uber Goa, FIR against aggregator; airport drop matter reaches assembly
Porvorim: Chief minister Pramod Sawant said on Friday govt would act against the illegal operation of Uber in the state after an opposition MLA said in the House that somebody in South Goa successfully booked a cab via the aggregator's app in Goa, a state that doesn't permit major app-based aggregators. North Goa SP Rahul Gupta said that an FIR has been registered against the Uber management and the driver, Devendra Satardekar, for allegedly illegally operating app-based taxi business. AAP MLA Venzy Viegas told the House on Friday that on Thursday night, a taxi was booked on the Uber app from Benaulim to Mopa (home to the Manohar International Airport). The Benaulim MLA said that some taxi operators download the app from the play store, register themselves, and start operating under the Uber app. The CM immediately responded saying govt has not given permission to Uber to operate in Goa. 'We will act against them,' he said. In a separate case, assistant director of transport filed a complaint against the management of Uber and a taxi driver Gupta said that the driver, allegedly in connivance with the Uber management, was found operating and picking up passengers via the app without the necessary state transport permit or licence. 'Such operations allegedly violate the transport laws of Goa, pose safety and security risks to passengers, and cause loss of revenue to the state exchequer,' he said. Recently, taxi unions in both North and South Goa voiced their firm opposition to the newly-drafted Goa transport aggregator guidelines, 2025, arguing that govt's push for app-based services would affect their livelihoods. The draft guidelines speak of regulating ride-hailing services and allowing taxi drivers to operate through any aggregator app of their choice using govt-notified rates. State govt received around 4,000 objections and suggestions for the guidelines. Coastal belt MLAs supported the demands of the taxi operators. Following pressure from them, Sawant said in June that cab aggregators like Ola and Uber would not be allowed in Goa. The entry of app-based taxis is a highly controversial issue in Goa, where local cabbies vigorously oppose any plan to introduce them, stating that this would eat into their earnings. Goa has witnessed several agitations, and taxis have even gone off the roads to stop govt from allowing app-based taxi aggregators in the state. Currently, two app-based aggregators supported by state govt are operating in the state, but there has been confrontation between app-based taxi drivers (who show up to pick up customers) and regular taxi operators. House passes Rs 28k cr budget for 2025-26, CM adds Rs 985.5 cr
Porvorim: After a stormy 15-day discussion on the state budget, the House on Friday passed chief minister 's financial statement for the current financial year. Sawant outlined the key steps that will be taken in the financial year through the budgetary allocation, including the implementation of the unified pension scheme for govt employees. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In his budget speech presented in March, Sawant pegged the budgetary outlay for this year at Rs 28,162 crore. However, on Friday, the chief minister increased the budget size by 3.5% through a supplementary demand for grants. Sawant sought and obtained the approval of the House to spend an additional Rs 985.5 crore, taking the total budget for the current year to Rs 29,147.5 crore. 'Of the additional funds, Rs 268.6 crore will be for revenue expenditure and Rs 717.4 crore will be for capital expenditure. We expected the total special assistance of Rs 900 crore from the Centre under the scheme for special assistance to states for capital expenditure. However, the guidelines were circulated in April, and Goa is eligible for more assistance to the extent of Rs 1,600 crore. The additional Rs 700 crore may be used for capital outlay,' said Sawant. Last year, Goa obtained more than Rs 1,200 crore under the scheme for special assistance to states for capital expenditure, while this year, Goa has already drawn Rs 400 crore through the scheme. 'With this, the fiscal deficit will increase by Rs 600 crore to Rs 3,400 crore against the projection made in the initial budget. The fiscal deficit will stay within the limits,' said Sawant. 'The supplementary budget provisions are being taken for development works.' Sawant said that govt has allocated Rs 100 crore to be spent in each constituency of the state. The funds will be utilised to improve the road network, water supply, electricity infrastructure, sewerage infrastructure, and waste management.
