Rory McIlroy among top golfers struggling through treacherous Oakmont rough in opening round of US Open

Fox News12-06-2025
All week long, golf fans have heard about the treacherous conditions that lurk at Oakmont Country Club for the 125th U.S. Open.
Rory McIlroy was among those golfers who proved why the course is so tough in this third major of the season.
The 2025 Masters champion was truly going through it at Oakmont during his Thursday round, and it came toward the end of what looked to be a great start for McIlroy.
McIlroy posted a front-nine 33, birdying his second and third holes while shooting par on the rest. However, the back nine was where things started to fall off the rails, and Oakmont's infamous thick rough played a huge part in that.
His first bogey of the day came on Hole 1 (McIlroy began his round on Hole 10), and things could've been much worse on Hole 4 when his drive on the par-5 fired to the right and landed on horrible, high grass.
The ball wasn't visible at all as McIlroy took a hack at it, and the result was it landing just a few feet in front of him. So, with one foot in a fairway bunker, McIlroy swung again but to no avail. The ball landed a few feet to the right this time.
McIlroy was stepping into his fourth shot on a hole that could've derailed his entire round. But he was able to get the ball on the fairway just in front of the green with a chance to at least go up and down to save bogey.
That's exactly what he did, needing a 30-foot putt to fall into the hole and he got it. McIlroy walked away hoping that was all the mishaps he would face, but more were coming.
Holes Nos. 6-8 saw bogey, bogey and double-bogey respectively, as McIlroy couldn't find any consistency in his swing. His putting stroke also didn't help, missing short putts that could've gone down for par.
On his second-to-last hole, McIlroy's tee shot on the 289-yard par-3 went deep into the rough behind the green, and he let off a frustrating swipe at it when his pitch shot once again went just a few feet in front of him.
McIlroy finished his round 4-over (74), which puts him tied for 64th on the U.S. Open leaderboard.
McIlroy wasn't the only one dealing with the harsh conditions at Oakmont, as one of his best friends, Shane Lowry, was truly going through it in his 9-over 79 on Thursday. He was even spotted throwing a microphone around the green after a chunked chip shot.
Top players like Justin Rose (7-over), Patrick Cantlay (6-over), Matthew Fitzpatrick (4-over) and Wyndham Clark (4-over) were also among those struggling on Thursday.
It will be interesting to see the leaderboard once those in the afternoon finish their rounds, as McIlroy and more could have some work to do on Friday to make the U.S. Open cut.

2025 Tour Championship odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions

The PGA Tour season wraps up this week with the 2025 Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. The FedExCup champion will be crowned, taking home a $10 million payout. With only 30 players in the field, the stakes are high this week. Below, we look at Tour Championship odds from BetMGM Sportsbook's odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions. The FedExCup Playoffs field was trimmed from 50 to 30 players at the BMW Championship, which Scottie Scheffler won. Unlike in years past, the Tour Championship will not have starting strokes for players based on their position in the FedExCup standings. Therefore, the winner of this week's tournament will also be the FedExCup champion. Scheffler is the heavy favorite at +165, followed by Rory McIlroy (+800), Tommy Fleetwood (+1200) and Ludvig Aberg (+1400). It's a loaded field with only 30 players, heightening the level of competition in Atlanta. East Lake (par 71, 7,490 yards) underwent a major restoration project after the 2023 Tour Championship, completely changing the layout and look of the course. Holes were changed significantly, grass types were swapped out in the fairways and greens, making it feel like a vastly different track. Tour Championship – Expert picks Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 9:33 a.m. ET. McIlroy won here in 2022 and has finished no worse than 16th in his career at this event. East Lake is a long course and McIlroy is one of the longest hitters on tour, giving him an edge over most players in the field. And with there being no starting strokes anymore, he won't be chasing down Scheffler. Hovland is a former winner here, taking home the title in 2023. He also finished fifth in 2021, 12th last year and 15th in 2022, showing good form at East Lake. His game seems to be rounding into form after finishing seventh last week at the BMW, making him a real contender at the Tour Championship this week. Burns tied for fourth at the BMW Championship last week, 5 shots off the pace set by Scheffler. That performance got him back on track after some subpar performances, but he's another player who tends to succeed at East Lake. He finished 12th last year, eighth in 2023 and 18th in 2021, with his worst finish being 24th in 2022. Tour Championship picks – Contenders Hall is making some noise leading into the Ryder Cup selection deadline and though he hasn't garnered much interest from the European team, that could change with a win this week. He's finished 28th or better in 11 straight starts this season, including a solo sixth last week. Bradley isn't turning his full attention to the Ryder Cup just yet, putting his focus on this week's Tour Championship where he finished ninth last year after the course's redesign. He's a great driver of the ball and keeps it in the fairway, making him a perfect fit for East Lake where hitting fairways is critical. WATCH: PGA Tour is live on ESPN+! Iga Swiatek interview takes awkward turn after win: ‘Probably me spitting on you'

Some things are better left unsaid. Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek's post-match interview took an awkward turn Sunday when the interviewer mentioned possibly spitting on her after beating Elena Rybakina in straight sets to reach the Cincinnati Open final. 'Wait, [is that] rain?' Swiatek, 24, said as she looked up at the sky, pausing a question about facing Jasmine Paolini in the final. 'No, it's probably me spitting on you when I'm asking you a question,' the interviewer said, which drew laughter from the audience at P&G Center Court. Swiatek glossed over the remark and apologized for pausing the interview. 4 Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek's post match interview took an awkward turn when the interviewer mentioned possibly spitting on her after beating Elena Rybakina in straight sets to reach the Cincinnati Open final on August 17, 2025.
