Hollie Doyle 'devastated' as she leads tributes for Trueshan after fatal injury

A visibly moved Hollie Doyle paid homage to her long-standing partner Trueshan, following the tragic loss of one of Flat racing's stalwarts at Goodwood on Tuesday. The much-loved stayer suffered a fatal injury, leaving fans and the racing community in shock.
Doyle was aboard Alan King's nine year old for the fourth time in the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup, a race they had previously won in 2021. The gelding was participating in his 35th race of an illustrious career when he abruptly pulled up halfway through.
Reflecting on their shared victories, which included 11 wins and three consecutive triumphs in the Long Distance Cup at Ascot on British Champions Day, a heartbroken Doyle told the PA news agency: "I'm just devastated. It couldn't be any worse. He was a special, special horse, I can't think of anything else to say."
'I am gutted. He's been amazing for me, a star, and those memories we have together are some of my very best.'
A 16-time winner – three of them coming at Group One level – Trueshan had attracted a following that is unusual for a Flat horse due to his longevity.
In 2022 he dropped into handicap company to defy one of the highest marks in recent times when winning the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle.
James Given, the British Horseracing Authority's director of equine welfare, told ITV Racing: 'I want to express my sincere condolences to all the connections and anyone associated with the horse, no one is going to feel this more than them.
'He's been a stalwart, he's been a firm friend, he's been everything to them
'What has happened unfortunately is just an accident, mid-race, in a straight line going up a hill. His left-hind pastern broke and left him in a situation that wasn't recoverable from.
'Alan was able to get down there and assess him with the vet and they felt there was no option really but to put him down.'

Alexander Isak reports for Newcastle training after rest of squad leave as Liverpool speculation continues

The 25-year-old Sweden international did not travel with his team-mates on their pre-season trip to Singapore and South Korea, ostensibly because of a minor thigh injury, after Liverpool, who subsequently tabled a £110million bid for him, let it be known they remained interested in acquiring his services. Isak, who later informed the club he wanted to explore his options this summer, instead flew to Spain to train at former club Real Sociedad and returned to Tyneside at the weekend, shortly before head coach Eddie Howe and his squad landed back from Seoul and were given two days off. The players were back at the training ground on Wednesday morning and their families were invited to join them after training. However, the PA news agency understands Isak, who reported back to the club's Benton base on Monday, was told not to come in until after they had left and was pictured arriving at around 1550. The £63million frontman has been a huge hit since his arrival from Sociedad during the summer of 2022 and played a key role last season as they ended their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy with the Carabao Cup and qualified for the Champions League for the second time in three seasons. However questioned about his absence in South Korea, Howe signalled that his actions might have repercussions. The 47-year-old told reporters: 'You have to earn the right to train with us. We are Newcastle United. 'The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team and part of a squad – you have to act in the right way. So that is also at play here. 'We will make sure that any player earns the right to train with the group. No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal.' Isak is understood to have undergone treatment and light training at a deserted training ground on Monday and it remains to be seen whether he will have any involvement in the club's pre-season fixtures against Espanyol and Atletico Madrid this weekend. ADVERTISEMENT Learn more The striker faces clear-the-air talks with Howe, with his situation becoming seemingly more complicated by the day as a difficult transfer window threatens to spiral further out of control. Newcastle tabled an improved club record bid for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko on Monday in an effort to beat Manchester United to the punch, but developments since suggest the 22-year-old is more likely to head for Old Trafford than St James' Park. That would represent the latest blow in a transfer window which has already seen the Magpies miss out on major targets Dean Huijsen, Bryan Mbeumo, Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro, James Trafford and Liam Delap. They have managed to recruit Nottingham Forest wide man Anthony Elanga and, on loan, Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, but with frontman Callum Wilson and midfielder Sean Longstaff having left, there is significant work to be done, with the start of the new season just 10 days away. Howe was already looking for a striker before the Isak situation came to a head and, with three years remaining on the Swede's current deal – he has so far resisted the club's overtures to sign a new contract – there seems to be little prospect of the club allowing him to leave either before they have secured a replacement or for much less than their £150m valuation, having already rebuffed Liverpool's initial approach. Meanwhile, sources on Tyneside have played down suggestions that Newcastle have tabled a bid for AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw, but it is understood they are maintaining an interest in the Germany international.

Champions Day at Ascot draws stellar entries

Many of the best horses in Europe have been entered for Qipco Champions Day at Ascot on 18 October. This year the card has been extended to seven races, with the addition of a two-year-old contest, while with the upgrade of the Long Distance Cup to Group One status there will be five top-level events for the first time and a record £4.35m in prize-money. The feature Qipco Champion Stakes sees recent King George winner Calandagan, Delacroix, Ombudsman, Los Angeles and last year's winner Anmaat among the 38 entries. Calandagan was second 12 months ago and his trainer Francis-Henri Graffard has also entered 2024 King George winner Goliath and the unbeaten Daryz. Karl Burke's Royal Champion was last seen impressing in the York Stakes, a win which has taken him up to a lofty rating of 120. "He is now the highest-rated horse I've ever trained," said Burke. "Hopefully he can live up to that, he wouldn't want the ground too slow but if he remains in good form we'll head to Ascot for the Champion Stakes." One name missing from the Champion Stakes is Field Of Gold, although he is one of the 38 in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Queen Anne Stakes winner Docklands, Lockinge victor Lead Artist, Sussex Stakes winner Qirat and Sunday's Prix Rothschild heroine Fallen Angel are all QEII possibles. Fallen Angel's trainer Burke has a trip to Ireland in mind for her next, but Ascot is firmly in his sights. "Fallen Angel has come out of her latest race in perfect condition. There's a good chance we head to Champions Day for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes," he said. "She'll have a trip to the Matron (Leopardstown) first, then to Newmarket for the Sun Chariot and then we could take on the big guns if she continues in good form. We'd fancy our chances if the ground came up on the slow side." John and Thady Gosden's Gold Cup hero Trawlerman is one of 29 in the British Champions Long Distance Cup for an increased pot of £500,000. Stablemates Courage Mon Ami, Sweet William and French Master also feature. Recent Goodwood Cup one-two Scandinavia and Illinois as well as Jan Brueghel are all possibles for Aidan O'Brien, who struck last year with Kyprios. There are 53 in contention for the British Champions Sprint Stakes with Royal Ascot winner Lazzat topping the bill. He could be joined by fellow French-trained entries such as Beauvatier, Daylight, Topgear and Woodshauna. Dockland's trainer Harry Eustace has entered Commonwealth Cup winner Time For Sandals after her good effort over five furlongs at Goodwood last week. "Time For Sandals won over six at Ascot, so it makes sense to give her an entry," he said. "How she runs next time out will determine if she goes, she's had quite a long season, because we prepped her up like she might be a Guineas filly, so she's not a definite just yet. "However, if she wins her next start, it will be really hard not to go there. Having one horse going there is a proud moment, but having two would be extremely exciting."

Snooker stars offered chance to bag £441,000 bonus for unprecedented feat – even if they don't win a game

SNOOKER STARS will once again bank a £147,000 bonus if they make two maximum breaks at selected events this season. The initiative will go live this campaign but the feat has to be performed twice at one of four major tournaments, either in qualifying or main-draw matches. For it to count, it has to happen at one of the prestigious Triple Crown events – the UK Championship, the Masters or the Worlds. Or at the second staging of the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters in Jeddah, which starts on Friday, and has a £500,000 prize for the champion. Up to three players could win this bonus – or should one player make six maximums, which is highly unlikely, then they would bank up to £441,000. Page, 23, used the money to help buy a house for his family but at the time he said he would have swapped it for the chance to play at the hallowed Sheffield theatre. The world No.34 said: 'I'll be going for it again this season. 'It's life-changing money. But also the feeling of achieving something that no player had done before. 'It definitely brings extra excitement to each tournament and I'm sure a lot of players will have an eye on 147 chances in Jeddah.' Advertisement
