Historic pub reopens promising top food and ale

Yahoo02-05-2025
A PUB in Herefordshire's stunning Wye Valley has reopened to customers.
The Hostelrie at Goodrich has been in the village for many years and was originally built in the 18th century.
Now with owner Aaron Ross and pub manager Corrin Franks at the helm, the Hostelrie has a new vision to be a rural pub with high-quality food and great tasting ales.

Corrin says being based very close to Goodrich Castle and right in the heart of the Wye Valley is a huge draw for not just the nearby village but also visitors such as walkers.
"We have a dedicated new team ready to welcome the locals back, Corrin said. It is a great pub, we have fantastic recipes and Goodrich has made it extra special by helping us."
The Hostelrie's chef is Corrin's daughter Amy, who has high hopes to give customers honest food in a friendly setting. Sourcing produce from Herefordshire and regional producers, everything will be cooked with care.
Also managing the nearby Cross Keys Inn just off the A40, Corrin adds that reopening Hostelrie "has been well received by the community."
The new team at the pub did a survey to find out what people's preferences and recommendations were for what makes a great community pub.
Out of 77 respondents, the top use of a pub was to use it for drinks and socialising. A popular feature was good quality, well-priced food, enjoying locally-brewed ales and also appreciating event such as quiz nights.
New positions are posted on the pub's website including front of house, a junior chef, bar staff and waiting staff.
"We have a new challenge and we have hopes to push forward and make Hostelrie succeed, Corrin said. The pub is in a beautiful part of the world."
A dog-friendly pub, a large beer garden on offer plus eight en-suite rooms, the Hostelrie has for far had good reviews on Tripadvisor.
Good Friday was the official relaunch date and one visitor describes attending the opening evening as "a wonderful night. What a difference! Treated to great food, the game pie was first class. Wye Valley beers on tap, fantastic hosts and lovely atmosphere. Can't recommend highly enough."

Beyoncé fans brave scorching heat for Houston hometown kickoff of 'Cowboy Carter' tour

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter is to set to light up Houston during the next stop of her "Cowboy Carter" tour. And fans are already braving scorching temperatures to witness the hometown opener. The Grammy-winning singer will launch her first concert in her hometown of Houston at NRG Stadium June 28. The show will mark her first Southern stop on her Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour. She is poised to perform two nights only on June 28 and June 29. From the United States to Europe, Beyoncé and her fans have powered through severe weather conditions, including an evacuation, cold temperatures and pouring rain to experience her concerts. In Houston, it was the heat they had to beat with the first show landing on a scorching 91-degree day. Despite this, fans swarmed the stadium grounds ahead of the show--some lining up early to secure spots in the VIP pits and others enduring the sun for a chance at merchandise. Bridget and Meghan Ryan traveled to Houston from Wisconsin to see Beyoncé in concert for the first time. After several flight delays and scheduling hiccups, the sisters were determined to snag official merchandise ahead of Saturday's show. Like many other fans, they ended up standing in a long line in the heat. "We're both from the Midwest, so the humidity is a little extra than what we're used to. I figured staying hydrated would be a good plan,' said Bridget Ryan. "I think it was a come hell or high water kind of situation. Whatever the weather was going to do we were going to show." Their determination didn't stop there. "We even talked about if we don't get any today after sitting outside maybe we'll come back tomorrow and try the truck again,' Meghan Ryan said. The H-Town stop comes after Beyoncé wrapped the international leg of her tour – first with a six-night stint in London, followed by three dazzling nights in Paris. Of course, Beyoncé first debuted her "Cowboy Carter" tour at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on April 28 with a 39-song set list. Her shows have been filled with family, fashion, different music genres, and most notably country music and cultural commentary. Less driving, more exploring: How open-jaw travel can transform your road trip

Open-jaw travel -- flying into one location, driving to and flying out of another -- means less time behind the wheel and more time exploring. Try it on your next road trip. The great American road trip is a summer travel staple. But for many, the lasting impression might be the seemingly endless serenade of 'Are we there yet?' With efficiency borrowed from European travelers who've mastered open-jaw travel — flying into and exploring one city, driving to another and flying home from yet another — you can maximize your summer vacation. Yes, it adds cost, but you're exploring more while spending less time behind the wheel, which is bound to keep fidgety family members happy. Here are two routes that keep the driving to about three hours while adding a fresh twist to a summer travel staple: Southern Swing We're starting a little ways off the trodden tourist path, but there's lots to do in Little Rock, Ark., beginning with a ranger-led interpretive tour at Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site (Tuesday-Saturday afternoons) and a visit to the Old State House Museum. Outdoorsy types can rent mountain bikes and take in the local trails, including the 88-mile Arkansas River Trail, while those who appreciate art can spend hours in the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, which has free entry. For a quick day trip, visit the spring-fed, Victorian-era bathhouses that make up Bathhouse Row in Hot Springs National Park. From Little Rock, it's a straight 140-mile drive through delta country to get to your next destination just across the Mississippi River. From barbecue to Beale Street, there's plenty to keep you busy in Memphis, and a stay at the Central Station hotel puts you within walking distance to most of it. Memphis barbecue is a unique style, separate from Kansas City, Texas or the Carolinas, with a focus on pork. Make time to stop at Leonard's Pit Barbecue or Charlie Vergos's Rendezvous, which pioneered the dry rub style Memphis is known for. If you're traveling with kids, visit Beale Street during the day; if not, enjoy the bars and music clubs in the evening. Speaking of music: No trip to Memphis is complete without stops at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, Sun Studio and Graceland. Now it's time to get back on I-40 and head about 200 miles east to the Country Music Capital of the World. No slouch in the culinary department, Nashville has long been famous for its hot chicken and, more recently, for its James Beard-nominated restaurants such as Bastion and Yolan. After a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, make time to hear some live music at the Grand Ole Opry, which lends the cultural weight you'll need after visiting the touristy honky tonk bars along Broadway. And keep your eyes on the calendar: The Opry is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Westward Wandering Fly into Glacier Park International Airport in Kalispell, Mont., and get a taste of the Yellowstone lifestyle at the all-inclusive Flathead Lake Lodge. Overlooking the largest freshwater lake in the west, it offers activities such as fishing and kayaking to the typical dude ranch pastimes of horseback riding and hiking. For a change of pace, check out the nearby towns of Bigfork or Kalispell. The next stop, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, is a 200-mile drive from it up by stopping at the St. Regis Travel Center in St. Regis, Montana, for a huckleberry milkshake. A resort town, Coeur d'Alene is renowned for skiing, but the area is an outdoor playground all year, with Silverwood Theme Park nearby or the lure of relaxing days stand-up paddleboarding on Lake Coeur d'Alene. After remote stops in Montana and Idaho, you might be ready for a slightly more urban experience. Spokane, Wash., delivers: As the smallest city to host a World's Fair, it's been punching above its weight for a while. Here you'll find interesting and eclectic eats, a thriving art scene, shopping, and views of the Spokane River from many perspectives.

From Euphoria to Entrepreneurship: Sydney Sweeney's Lingerie Brand Gets Bezos Boost

is preparing to debut a lingerie brand reportedly backed by Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) founder investor Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sánchez. The Emmy-nominated actress, best known for her roles in HBO's 'Euphoria' and 'The White Lotus,' has spent the last year building what insiders describe as a personal passion project, Fox Business reports. The brand is reportedly backed by Ben Schwerin, a partner at Coatue Management and former Snap (NYSE:SNAP) executive. According to The Economic Times, Schwerin's involvement marks a notable moment, as Coatue has traditionally focused on high-growth tech and rarely invests in consumer-facing brands. The Economic Times reports that Schwerin may have been hired to use his celebrity relationships to bring in star-driven brands like Sweeney's. Bezos And Dell Seed Coatue's $1 Billion Innovation Fund Amid Strategic Shifts Coatue Management recently launched a new innovation fund with $1 billion in seed capital committed by the family offices of Bezos and Michael Dell, The Wall Street Journal reports. The fund will allocate between 20% and 50% of its assets to private companies, with the rest targeting public stocks, based on a pitch deck seen by the outlet. "It's such an obvious idea that if I don't do it, someone else will," Philippe Laffont, Coatue's founder, told the Journal in an interview. Though neither Bezos nor Dell directly invested in Sweeney's company, The Economic Times says their capital underpins the same Coatue vehicle now backing her venture. Founded in 1999, Coatue is known for major investments in high-profile startups like OpenAI, SpaceX, and xAI, managing $54 billion in assets as of December, according to the Journal. Of the assets Coatue managed as of December, approximately $22.3 billion was allocated to public equities while $22.9 billion was designated for early-stage and growth venture investments. Trending: This AI-Powered Trading Platform Has 5,000+ Users, 27 Pending Patents, and a $43.97M Valuation — The Journal says the new fund tied to Bezos and Dell is expected to become a high-margin revenue stream for Coatue, with an annual management fee of 1.25% and a 12.5% performance fee on profits that exceed 5% annually, based on the firm's pitch deck reviewed by the outlet. The firm's new fund lowers the investment threshold to $50,000 and is launching with Swiss banking giant UBS to attract high-net-worth individuals who want exposure to private tech and consumer innovations, the Journal reports. The move reflects a growing appetite to blend Silicon Valley capital strategies with cultural and influencer-driven brands. Sweeney's Rise As A Brand Builder Signals Shift In Celebrity Entrepreneurship During her rise to fame, Sweeney has formed partnerships with major global brands like Kérastase, Bai, HeyDude, and Laneige, according to Fox Business. She recently garnered headlines for a campaign with Dr. Squatch, promoting a novelty body soap reportedly infused with her bathwater, further showcasing her influence as a digital-era presence at Bezos and Sánchez's June wedding in Venice, initially seen as unusual, now aligns with reports linking her new venture to Bezos-backed funds, Fox Business says. Posts on Sweeney's social media in lingerie and swimwear with model Amélie Tremblay are now being interpreted as pre-launch teasers, suggesting a savvy, staged rollout of her product line, according to The Economic Times. While Coatue has not confirmed the precise amount invested in Sweeney's company, its reported pivot toward culture-forward assets is attracting attention across both the retail and venture ecosystems.
