City to engage those affected by the migration of accounts
On May 26, the CoE will host an online session for all customers migrating from Rand Water to the city's billing system.
The session will be held between 14:00 to 16:00 on Microsoft Teams. Affected customers not yet contacted by the city can reach Lebogang Ramashala on lebogang.ramashala@ekurhuleni.gov.za or 011 999 0111 for the meeting link and password.
While the city is migrating about 176 water supply accounts previously billed by Rand Water, it invites all affected customers to the online session where officials will answer any concerns and questions.
The migration process should be complete by June 30.

The utility explained that recovery patterns will vary significantly based on geographical elevation. It stated that low-lying areas are expected to see water supply return first, while residents in high-lying areas will likely experience longer wait times before their taps flow normally again. Demand management will play a crucial role in the recovery process, according to Rand Water officials. 'Recovery depends on overall demand, so if your supply is back, please use water sparingly to help the system stabilise,' the utility advised residents. Johannesburg Water previously cautioned that the recovery process would extend well beyond the completion of maintenance activities. 'After each maintenance has been completed, it will take a maximum of 14 days for the system to fully recover, and for normal water supply to return,' Johannesburg Water stated in earlier communications with residents. Ekurhuleni budget: Residents to pay more for water, electricity, sanitation & refuse removal
JOHANNESBURG - Ekurhuleni's Finance MMC Jongizizwe Dlabathi has presented a R65 billion budget for the 2025/2026 financial year. This represents an 8.6% increase from 2024/2025's budget, which projected revenue at R60 billion. Dlabathi delivered his budget speech on Thursday morning at the Ekurhuleni city council in Germiston. Just like Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni has seen an increase in its annual budget, with the bulk of its revenue coming from services delivered to residential and commercial customers. Tariff increases have been implemented for the upcoming financial year, which are expected to generate additional income for the municipality. Ekurhuleni residents will now pay more for water, electricity, sanitation, and refuse removal. However, Dlabathi said in some areas, the municipality had chosen not to raise tariffs. "Zero percent [0%] on property rate, given the new valuation roll. Zero percent burial and cemetery tariff increase is proposed - 0% for CoE [City of Ekurhuleni] residents and 4.3% for non-CoE residents. We are also pleased to announce a 0% tariff increase for municipal bus services and hiring of facilities." He believes the metro was more lenient than other metros in raising service charges.

Planned 16-day water supply shutdown to affect parts of Gauteng
Rand Water is undertaking a mandatory Dam Safety Evaluation (DSE) and cleaning operation on the Sasolburg Reservoir, which serves multiple communities. As a result, the water supply will be shut off from 6:00 on 30 May until 6:00 on 14 June. The affected areas include Tshepiso, Boipatong, Bophelong, Bophelong Extensions, Bonanne, and surrounding plots. 'The shutdown has been planned for some time and has faced several postponements due to the scale of its impact,' said the Emfuleni Municipality statement. 'Regrettably, it cannot be rescheduled anymore on account of regulatory requirements for ensuring reservoir and public safety.' During the operation, the reduced pressure in the A15 pipeline will lead to water supply disruptions at the Bedworthpark, Sharpeville, and Vanderbijlpark reservoir meters. Despite the inconvenience, the municipality has promised to provide alternative water supply measures during the shutdown. In addition to the Sasolburg project, Rand Water will conduct a wider infrastructure maintenance operation from Thursday to Monday. This includes upgrades at the Eikenhof, Palmiet, Mapleton, and Zwartkopjes systems, which may cause low water pressure or intermittent water supply across Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, and Tshwane. 'The objective of this planned maintenance is to increase capacity and improve plant availability, reliability, and operational efficiency,' said Rand Water spokesperson Makensoi Maroo. 'Thereby supporting a more resilient and adaptable water supply network in preparation for the anticipated increase in supply volumes from August.' Maintenance will affect supply in local municipalities such as Rand West, Mogale City, Midvaal, Emfuleni, Merafong, Madibeng, Lesedi, Govan Mbeki, Rustenburg, Victor Khanye, and Thembisile Hani. Residents have been urged to prepare for the upcoming shutdown by storing water in advance and using it sparingly.
