Planned 16-day water supply shutdown to affect parts of Gauteng

Rand Water is undertaking a mandatory Dam Safety Evaluation (DSE) and cleaning operation on the Sasolburg Reservoir, which serves multiple communities. As a result, the water supply will be shut off from 6:00 on 30 May until 6:00 on 14 June. The affected areas include Tshepiso, Boipatong, Bophelong, Bophelong Extensions, Bonanne, and surrounding plots.
'The shutdown has been planned for some time and has faced several postponements due to the scale of its impact,' said the Emfuleni Municipality statement.
'Regrettably, it cannot be rescheduled anymore on account of regulatory requirements for ensuring reservoir and public safety.'
During the operation, the reduced pressure in the A15 pipeline will lead to water supply disruptions at the Bedworthpark, Sharpeville, and Vanderbijlpark reservoir meters. Despite the inconvenience, the municipality has promised to provide alternative water supply measures during the shutdown.
In addition to the Sasolburg project, Rand Water will conduct a wider infrastructure maintenance operation from Thursday to Monday. This includes upgrades at the Eikenhof, Palmiet, Mapleton, and Zwartkopjes systems, which may cause low water pressure or intermittent water supply across Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, and Tshwane.
'The objective of this planned maintenance is to increase capacity and improve plant availability, reliability, and operational efficiency,' said Rand Water spokesperson Makensoi Maroo.
'Thereby supporting a more resilient and adaptable water supply network in preparation for the anticipated increase in supply volumes from August.'
Maintenance will affect supply in local municipalities such as Rand West, Mogale City, Midvaal, Emfuleni, Merafong, Madibeng, Lesedi, Govan Mbeki, Rustenburg, Victor Khanye, and Thembisile Hani.
Residents have been urged to prepare for the upcoming shutdown by storing water in advance and using it sparingly. Efforts to mitigate the water supply impact are underway, but cooperation from the public remains essential.

How Orlando Pirates found and signed new midfielder

Soweto giants Orlando Pirates are set to introduce a new player before the start of the Betway Premiership season in August. Masindi Nemtajela, a 23-year-old from Johannesburg's Soweto, will be unveiled by Orlando Pirates from Marumo Gallants. Nemtejela, who has played 20 matches in the Premier Soccer League this season, is a holding midfielder who will replace the departed Miguel Timm at the Buccaneers. Orlando Pirates transfer news: African striker, Lepasa, Ndlondlo According to this latest report, the clubs' scouts and recruiters recommended Nemtajela to the Sea Robbers. The contract details suggest a three-year deal. Zimbabwean attacker to Orlando Pirates? 'The deal for Masindi Nemtajela is as good as done. It's actually believed to be a three-year deal. Almost everything is finalised and he is expected to join the team in the pre-season camp. It's actually the scouts and recruiters who recommended him to the team so it's not really about who the coach will be. They looked at what he brings to the team which apparently is different from most of the midfielders the club has at the moment. So it's a three-year deal from July 2025 to June 2028,' an insider told Soccer Laduma. 'The scouts and recruiters were looking at a direct replacement for Timm and Masindi fitted in that area and that's why they went for him. Now it's believed that everything is sorted and a three-year deal has been agreed,' an additional source added. Truth: Is Kaizer Chiefs interested in ex-Orlando Pirates striker?

Kaizer Chiefs are expected to add at least two strikers ahead of the next season, as they look to improve. Chiefs failed to finish in the top eight, despite winning the Nedbank Cup, that partially due to a blunt attack. Upon arrival at Chiefs last season, Nabi made it clear that the club still needs a striker. He was heavily reliant on Ranga Chivaviro as well as Wandile Duba at that time. Later in that season, Ashley du Preez returned from injury and featured more, with two new forwards signed. Tashreeq Morris and Glody Lilepo were those additions, and to mixed fortunes. While Lilepo was a success with five goals, making him the club's joint top goal scorer, Morris flopped. It is then no surprise that Nabi is back making it his personal mission to find a complete striker for Chiefs. That has since seen numerous names mentioned as possible suitors for the club in the next transfer window. One of those names has been Fiston Mayele, who recently scored in the CAF Champions League final. His goal was one of two that ensured that Pyramids FC won their first ever continental title, at the expense of Mamelodi Sundowns. Another Chiefs are rumoured to be interested in is Etiosa Ighodaro, from Sundowns. Now a shock name that has returned to the conversation is former Orlando Pirates striker Bienvenu Eva Nga. The Cameroonian was previously linked with Chiefs before joining Pirates. But according to Soccer-Laduma , the current rumours are false. 'No, not at this stage, that's not the move you can expect. There was a possibility of that in the past but not at this moment (Chiefs being interested in Eva Nga).' Said one source to the same publication. Another also poured cold water on the prospect of Eva Nga joining Chiefs. 'Chiefs are focused abroad for attacking players at the moment. I haven't heard anything about the player (Eva Nga) you are mentioning.' Said the source. Chiefs fans, are you happy that Eva Nga won't be joining your club? Pros and cons of digital transformation in the developing world

Across the world, digital technologies are reshaping how people live, work and connect. From artificial intelligence (AI) to high-speed internet and digital platforms, this transformation offers great potential for economic growth and social progress. However, with that promise comes a critical challenge: ensuring that the digital future is equitable, sustainable and inclusive. Emerging technologies have already started driving significant gains and AI alone could add as much as $4.4 trillion (R78 trillion) annually to the global economy, according to the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report . Digital tools are helping small businesses tap into global markets, while fintech services and online platforms are enabling entrepreneurs to reach customers and capital more easily than ever. For micro, small and medium enterprises, the digital economy offers unprecedented opportunities for job creation and innovation – if they have access to skills training, financing, and reliable internet. In developing countries, digital infrastructure is offering a chance to surge ahead of traditional development paths. E-learning and e-commerce are opening doors in rural and under-served communities, creating new paths to prosperity and participation in the global economy. Internet access remains an issue However, the digital divide remains a concern. Over 2.6 billion people still lack internet access and many face barriers due to cost, lack of digital literacy and infrastructure challenges. This inequity leaves a lot of people without access to essential services, education and economic opportunities – threatening to widen rather than close global disparities. Additionally, the benefits of digitalisation are not evenly distributed. While some workers and industries gain from automation and AI, others face job displacement. Estimates suggest that AI-driven automation could create 11 million jobs globally while displacing nine million, with uneven impacts across regions and sectors. To manage this transition responsibly, governments, businesses and civil society must invest in education and social protections. Ensuring that the digital economy is dynamic and fair requires a concerted effort to build inclusive digital infrastructure and policy frameworks. As the world accelerates into a digital future, the choices made today will determine whether this transformation serves as a bridge to shared prosperity – or becomes a barrier that deepens existing divides.
