Star India javelin thrower Sachin Yadav on Sunday, May 31, entered an elite list comprising the likes of Neeraj Chopra and Davinder Singh Kang to win a medal in the event at the Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea. Sachin won silver in the prestigious tournament.
Paris Olympics gold medallist, Arshad Nadeem, dominated the contest from his third throw onwards, bagging gold with a huge throw of 86.4m.

Apart from Sachin, India's Yashvir Singh finished fifth with his personal best throw of 82.57m. Despite achieving personal bests, both Sachin and Yashvir remain outside of the World Championship qualification mark, which requires a minimum throw of 85.5m for the athlete to qualify for the event.
Hailing from a farmer's family at Khekra village near Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh, Sachin had a previous personal best of 84.39m.
Arshad had qualified for the final of the tournament by topping the heats with a throw of 86.34m.
In the final, Arshad's first two throws were underwhelming, but he breached the 85m mark with his third throw of the day.
From there on, Arshad remained in the lead and bettered his distance in his last attempt in the javelin throw final.
Arshad's biggest rival, Neeraj, decided to skip the tournament to focus on his Diamond League events.
Neeraj breached the 90m mark at the Doha Diamond League, ending a long wait for the coveted mark.

Bangladesh set to replace Pakistan in Asia Cup hockey

New Delhi: Bangladesh is likely to replace Pakistan in the men's Asia Cup hockey starting later this month after the latter's withdrawal from the tournament. The Asia Cup is slated to be held in Rajgir, Bihar from August 29. File photo of Indian men's hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh in action. (HT Photo) The Indian government had assured that visas will be granted to the Pakistan team but the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has refused to travel citing security concerns. People in the know in Islamabad told HT that the Pakistan team will not travel to India for the tournament. The organisers have already approached Bangladesh to replace Pakistan in the eight-team tournament whose winner will book a berth in next year's World Championship. Hockey India said the scenario will be clear in the next two days. 'We received the invitation from the AHF (Asian federation) this afternoon. God willing, we will take part in the Asia Cup. Preparations are already underway,' Lt. Col. (retd) Riazul Hasan, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Hockey Federation, was quoted as saying in media reports. 'The Indian government has already said that it is willing to provide visas to Pakistani players but if they don't want to come to India, it's not our problem. Bangladesh has already been invited to participate in case Pakistan doesn't come, but we will have to wait for two more days to get the confirmation,' a HI official was quoted as saying by PTI. The Asia Cup is a qualifying tournament for the 2026 World Cup and Pakistan's absence puts their chances of qualifying in doubt. Pakistan Hockey Federation had earlier suggested that the tournament be moved out of India. Besides hosts India, China, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Oman and Chinese Taipei are confirmed for the tournament.

Veteran GM confidently claims 'I Am Stronger' when comparing herself to young challengers

In an exclusive interview with Firstpost, veteran chess grandmaster Koneru Humpy exuded confidence as she elaborated on what distinguishes her from the rising generation of young chess players in the country. Veteran Indian grandmaster Koneru Humpy has had a remarkable year so far. At 38, Humpy shows no signs of slowing down and, in fact, continues to improve. The two-time Women's World Rapid Chess Champion had an outstanding performance at the recently concluded FIDE Women's World Cup, where she defied the odds to reach the final. Although she fell short against compatriot Divya Deshmukh in the summit clash, her runner-up finish secured a spot in the Candidates Tournament, giving her a genuine opportunity to challenge the reigning champion Ju Wenjun for the World Championship title. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In an exclusive conversation with Firstpost's sports editor, Rupha Ramani, Koneru Humpy discussed various aspects of her career and life. The women's grandmaster reflected on her FIDE World Cup performance and tagged herself as 'lucky', stating that the tough tie-breaker against Lei Tingjie could have gone either way. 'I was also lucky in some of the rounds up until the finals", she said. 'I somehow survived. I played a very tough tie-breaker in the semi-final. The match against world number 3 could have gone either way.' 'I am much more stronger': Humpy on competing with youngsters While Humpy suffered a loss to the 19-year-old Deshmukh, she remains unfazed and considers herself stronger than the emerging young chess stars in the country. However, she did not deny having drawbacks but feels she can match the youngsters' energy and only needs to improve her stamina. 'I am much more stronger. Sometimes the result don't reflect that. I do have drawbacks. I don't have the same energy as the youngsters. I need to improve my stamina,' she said. Humpy has been exceptional for India throughout her career, displaying phenomenal consistency that allowed her to reclaim her position among the best even after a lengthy hiatus. She took maternity leave in 2017 and returned to the circuit at the end of 2018, since then she has been a force to be reckoned with. On balancing motherhood and chess On being asked how she juggles the role of being a mother and a chess player, she said, 'It has not been easy. I was not a completely professional player post-2018. I was playing tournaments, but there were moments when I played matches with just 10-15 days of practice. It is never easy to sustain at this level. For the past two years, I have been doing well. The level of competition is quite high - Especially the preparation part. Unless you put effort and time into the sport, it is hard to achieve results.' 'I am balancing. But I definitely miss my daughter when I am playing. Till July, it was a completely hectic schedule. My daughter missed me and was counting days. Sometimes you need to sacrifice to achieve something', she added. Watch the full conversation here:
