SRM presents cash awards to student athletes
Amaravati: SRM-AP celebrated the 79th Independence Day with the hoisting of the national flag by Vice Chancellor Prof Manoj K Arora, cultural programmes, felicitation of student athletic champions who secured national-level and state-level medals in various championships and honouring the staff who have completed five years of dedicated service to the university. Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof Ch Satish Kumar, Registrar Dr R Premkumar, Deans of all schools, Directors, faculty, staff and students attended the programme. In his Independence Day address, Prof Arora spoke of the collective dream of seeing India as a developed nation through the Viksit Bharat by 2047, stressing the importance of economic, social, and environmental sustainability on campus. He encouraged embracing technology in education, reimagining learning with AI, and adopting the philosophy to 'learn, unlearn, and relearn.' The university also honoured the remarkable achievements of the students in the field of sports. Kunja Ranjita (B Com 1st year), winner of a Gold Medal in the Women's 4×400m Relay at the 26th Asian Athletics Championship, was presented with a cash award of Rs 5 lakh along with Budde Shanmukhi Naga Sai (B Com 1st year), who broke two world records and secured three silver medals in Compound Archery at the Singapore 2025 Asia Cup Leg 2, who received a Rs 10 lakh award. The event also witnessed the felicitation of non-teaching staff members with mementoes who completed five years of service for their long-standing contributions to the university. Cultural programmes by the students and staff, including a yoga demonstration, semi-classical dance performance, short skit and melodious songs showcased India's artistic diversity and its values, resonating the true patriotic spirit.

VIT-AP felicitates nine unsung heroes to mark Independence Day celebrations
Patriotic fervour swept through schools and colleges across Andhra Pradesh as the nation celebrated its 79th Independence Day on Friday. At VIT-AP University, nine unsung heroes from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), AP State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), and AP State Disaster Response and Fire Services Department were felicitated for their exemplary service. 'Independence Day is not just a commemoration of freedom; it's a tribute to the courage of countless unsung heroes who built this nation,' said R. L. Narayana, Corporate Vice-President and Location Head (Vizag and Hyderabad) of WNS Global Services Pvt. Ltd., who was the chief guest. The honourees included NDRF head constables N. Gopala Krishna and K. Lokesachari; APSRTC drivers (late) Sk. M. Rasool, (late) Bhaskar, and Muneiah Kanchani; APSRTC conductor M. Venkata Ramana; fireman P. Hema Srikanth Reddy; Station Fire Officer Y. Venkateswarlu; and Assistant District Fire Officer Anjaneyulu Jakkampudi. Each received a memento and ₹25,000 in cash. The event was attended by VIT-AP Vice-Chancellor S. V. Kota Reddy, Registrar M. Jagadish Chandra, and Deputy Director of Student Welfare Sk. Khadeer Pasha, among others. At SRM University–AP, Vice-Chancellor Manok K. The celebrations featured a blend of cultural performances and devotional activities. Directors Parimi Pavan Chand, Swetha Bindu, and Kadiyala Praveen Kumar; Academic Director David Raj; Principal M. S. Bhuvaneswaran; and Vice-Principal Sanjay Bhatia joined in the flag-hoisting ceremony.

Sachin Yadav Clinches Javelin Silver At Asian Athletics Championships

Star India javelin thrower Sachin Yadav on Sunday, May 31, entered an elite list comprising the likes of Neeraj Chopra and Davinder Singh Kang to win a medal in the event at the Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea. Sachin won silver in the prestigious tournament. Paris Olympics gold medallist, Arshad Nadeem, dominated the contest from his third throw onwards, bagging gold with a huge throw of 86.4m. Sachin had stayed outside of medal contention but propelled himself into second with two brilliant throws of 83.03m and 85.16m in the last two attempts of the event. Despite achieving personal bests, both Sachin and Yashvir remain outside of the World Championship qualification mark, which requires a minimum throw of 85.5m for the athlete to qualify for the event. Hailing from a farmer's family at Khekra village near Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh, Sachin had a previous personal best of 84.39m. Arshad had qualified for the final of the tournament by topping the heats with a throw of 86.34m. In the final, Arshad's first two throws were underwhelming, but he breached the 85m mark with his third throw of the day. From there on, Arshad remained in the lead and bettered his distance in his last attempt in the javelin throw final. Arshad's biggest rival, Neeraj, decided to skip the tournament to focus on his Diamond League events. Neeraj breached the 90m mark at the Doha Diamond League, ending a long wait for the coveted mark. India at the Asian Athletics Championships Earlier, Animesh Kujur opened India's account on the final day of competitions with a bronze medal in the men's 200m final. He produced a standout performance, setting a new national record of 20.32 seconds. Animesh bettered his previous mark of 20.4s, set earlier this year at the National Federation Senior Athletics Competition. SRM-A.P.'s student part of women's team that won gold in 4×400 metres relay at international tourney
Kunja Rajitha, a first-year B. Com. student at Paari School of Business, SRM University-A.P., Amaravati, is part of the Women's 4×400 metres relay team that made history by clinching a gold on Day 3 of the 26th Asian Athletics Championship being held in South Korea on April 30, Thursday. The other three in her team included Jisna Mathew, Rupal Chaudhary and Subha Venkatesan. The quartet clocked the season-best time of 3:34.18s, edging past Vietnam and Sri Lanka in the finals, according to a report from the university. India won gold in the Women's 4x400m relay at the Asian Athletics Championships after 12 years. The university's Sports Director, Anup Singh Suryavanshi, congratulated Rajitha on her achievement and said it is a testament to her hard work and resilience. Her performance on such an international platform inspires all student-athletes nationwide, he added. SRM University Pro Vice-Chancellor Satish Kumar and Vice-Chancellor Manoj K Arora praised Rajitha and said her journey reminds one that students can rise to any challenge with the right support and determination. Her success adds to the growing legacy of the university as a hub for talent, they said. Rajitha hails from an inaccessible tribal village near Kunavaram in the Alluri Sitarama Raju district of Andhra Pradesh. Despite all odds, she continued her education while pursuing her dreams and became a national-level athlete, the release said. Rajitha bagged gold in the 400-metre sprint event at the Khelo India Youth Games-2022, held in Haryana. She also secured second place in a similar event in the 2019 edition of Khelo India held in Assam. In 2018, Rajitha joined Tenvic Sports Academy in Nellore. Later, she trained under coach Mike Russell at SAA Centre of Excellence in Guntur.

Golden moments in Gumi
Qatar athletes delivered a strong show at the 26th Asian Athletics Championship in South Korea on Thursday, adding another gold medal and a bronze to their tally. At the Gumi Civic Stadium in Gumi, Qatar's men's 4x400m relay quartet of Abderrahman Samba, Bassem Hemeida, Hatim Aitoulaghazi and Ammar Ismail Ibrahim clinched the gold medal with an impressive time of 3:03.52.
