This U.S. National Park Has One of the Largest Gorges on the East Coast—and Is Nicknamed the 'Grand Canyon of the South'

East Coasters don't have to go all the way out to Arizona or Colorado to discover a jaw-dropping canyon, carved into the Earth by millions of years of flowing water. Tucked into the corner of Virginia and Kentucky, Breaks Interstate Park spans 4,500 acres across both states—and its focal point is a chasm created by the Russell Fork of the Big Sandy River.
'Breaks Park takes its name from the 'break' in Pine Mountain, a colossal, nearly shear-walled canyon 1,000 feet deep and five miles long,' Ronnie Hylton, chief ranger at Breaks Interstate Park, tells Travel + Leisure . Among the largest canyons east of the Mississippi River, it's often referred to as the "Grand Canyon of the South.'
To get one of the best views of the impressive natural formation, he recommends heading up to Towers Overlook, where you'll spot the 'rugged finger of Pine Mountain capped with giant sandstone cliffs' nearly surrounded by the river. It's dramatic and awe-inspiring, but the canyon itself is just one of the reasons to plan a trip to the park.
There's something here for almost every interest. For avid hikers, there are 17 different hiking trails (13 miles in total), and you'll want to come prepared with sturdy shoes and the proper gear. 'The Breaks' mountain topography, while creating spectacular scenery, presents navigation challenges on trails and overlooks, particularly for those unaccustomed to steep and rocky terrain,' says Hylton. 'Hiking poles or sticks can be extremely helpful.'
If that's your ideal type of outdoor adventure, he recommends a couple of different hikes, starting with the Prospector Trail. 'This trail could easily be called the 'Belt of the Breaks,' as it descends hikers into the canyon on a sliver of slope situated between the top and bottom tiers of cliffs that form the Breaks,' he explains. 'Although a bit rocky, hikers will be rewarded by traveling under and through massive geological formations for the entire 1.5 miles.'
It can also be combined with the Overlook Trail and Geological Trail to form a longer loop, granting even more views of the canyon. You can also just hike the Overlook Trail, which he says is particularly nice in the early morning and in the evening.
For anyone who enjoys spending time on the water, there are plenty of ways to get your fix. Canoe, kayak, and pedal boat rentals are available to explore any of the still water within or near the park, including Laurel Lake and Beaver Pond. You can also fish for canyon trout or whitewater smallmouth bass in the Russell Fork.
Although the peak of spring and fall are popular times to visit Breaks Interstate Park, Hylton recommends planning your trip for either early spring or late fall, when 'minimal foliage reveals the impressive geological features of the canyon.' This time of year is also when visitors will get the chance to see the re-established Virginia elk herd. Following their reintroduction in 2012, they've since made homes within forests and rehabilitated coal mine sites in the area. Breaks Interstate Park offers seasonal tours to the Virginia Elk Restoration Zone, where visitors can view the elk (reservations are required).

HGTV ranks this Florida city among US's best in southern charm. Have you been to it?

Need ideas for your next weekend trip? HGTV released its list of the "40 Most Charming Small-Town Downtowns in America," featuring one in Florida. The home improvement and real estate network explored the history, culture, attractions and beauty that make small-town downtowns across America charming. "Nothing charms like a small downtown that beckons visitors with historic architecture and boutique shops or local culture and tree-lined streets," the HGTV article said, adding that the writers specifically sought downtowns inviting visitors. Only one Florida town appeared on HGTV's list — Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island. "Situated in the northeast corner of Florida, Amelia Island is bursting with charm and a distinct character all its own," HGTV writes. "It's also home to Fernandina Beach and its delightful 50-block historic district that has something for everyone, particularly along Centre Street where you'll find antique shops, eclectic boutiques and local favorites like indie bookstore, the Book Loft." HGTV also highlights the Hoyt House Bed & Breakfast, where visitors can unwind and dine at Lagniappe, where the chef puts a French spin on Southern cuisine. The story suggests travelers feast at Down Under while watching the sunset and looking for manatees and dolphins from the oversized deck. HGTV clearly knows what it's talking about — travel magazine Travel + Leisure referred to the town last year as "a delightful blend of Southern charm, centuries-old historical sites, and, as its name suggests, picture-perfect stretches of sand and sea." "Fernandina Beach was once a stomping ground for swashbuckling pirates, Prohibition-era bootleggers, and a host of other interesting characters. Today, it's a quirky, relaxing, family-friendly escape full of great food, unique stories, and plenty of activities to enjoy," the outlet writes. HGTV narrowed its list of the best small-town downtowns across America down to 40 destinations. Here is where they are: Athens, Georgia Mystic, Connecticut Fernandina Beach, Florida Middleburg, Virginia Concord, North Carolina Dahlonega, Georgia Cape Charles, Virginia Conway, South Carolina Pacific Grove, California Greenville, South Carolina Charlottesville, Virginia Breckenridge, Colorado Wickford, Rhode Island Bar Harbor, Maine Bastrop, Texas Lewes, Delaware Taos, New Mexico Galena, Illinois Marquette, Michigan Lewiston, New York Abilene, Kansas Ketchum, Idaho St. Michaels, Maryland Carmel-by-the-Sea, California Virginia City, Nevada Lake Placid, New York Bend, Oregon Williams, Arizona Harpers Ferry, West Virginia Covington, Kentucky Medora, North Dakota Deadwood, South Dakota Solvang, California Montpelier, Vermont Park City, Utah Livingston, Montana York, Pennsylvania Franklin, Tennessee Portsmouth, New Hampshire Fish Creek, Wisconsin Contributing: Ginnie Sandoval, Salem Statesman Journal This article originally appeared on Florida Times-Union: HGTV: Fernandina Beach, Florida, on most charming downtowns list

What's In Dylan Efron's Bag? Star Reveals Full Summer Skincare Routine

Dylan Efron lounges at the beach with his dog while promoting his Cortizone-10 partnership Photo courtesy of Cortizone-10 Dylan Efron's appreciation for a summer skincare routine comes from a handful of places. It doesn't hurt that his brother Zac spent his life in front of the camera. And having women in his life, including longtime girlfriend Courtney King, has likely had its influence. But on his own account, the outdoorsy winner of The Traitors has turned to various forms of skin protection to coincide with his active lifestyle. In fact, Efron just teamed up with Cortizone-10 to launch their Fast Acting Itch Relief Cooling Spray, as part of an Itchy Bear Season campaign. This is just one of many products Efron incorporates into his summer skincare routine. 'I've used the brand since I was a kid,' Efron said during a one-on-one Zoom call. 'I grew up in a small town and there wasn't much to do on weekends. So it was like almost every week I got poison oak. We had a lot of oak trees and we'd go climbing through the little creek in our hometown, or we'd go float the river. And it was just one of those things where there was nothing I could do. I was always that kid who got rashes and mosquito bites in the group. This stuff actually works. Ever since then it's been a staple for me. I don't travel without it.' In addition to other practical outdoor travel skincare, including ChapStick and topical antibiotics like Neosporin, the Down to Earth With Zac Efron producer is a fan of everyday products. Below, Efron reveals which items from his summer skincare routine make it to his travel bag. 1. Elta MD UV Daily Broad-Spectrum SPF 40 'I'm 33, and I'm seeing a lot of my friends who I grew up with start to look a little old,' Efron said. 'I think face sunscreen is so important for that. I think body sunscreen, I can get away with not wearing if I'm not out outdoors all day, but face sunscreen, you need it. It really makes a difference. That's something that my brother instilled in me from a young age. I would always steal his Elta MD. So yeah, I think that's been my number one for how I've been able to maintain good complexion—a good face sunscreen.' 2. ISDIN Fusion Water Magic SPF 40 'I really like this sunscreen, too,' Efron said of the award-winning vitamin E and hyaluronic acid-based product. 'It's that same feeling when you put on the Supergoop!, in that it doesn't feel like traditional sunscreen. I like on a late day.' 3. Clarins Double Serum + Double Serum Eye Duo The TV personality joked that he can't pronounce 'hyaluronic acid,' but he's a fan of the ingredient in his favorite duo, which hydrates and plumps the skin. Rest assured, Efron doesn't abandon his moisturizing step, he just has a handful in rotation and can't pin down only one. 4. Elemis Pro-Collagen Hydra-Gel Eye Masks 'As a 33-year-old male, who's never been into this stuff, I would see people with these face patches,' Efron said. 'Then you use them once and you're like, oh my god, this stuff works. Like I see why people use them. These are really expensive, but they're so good though.' THE TRAITORS — "The Day of Reckoning is Upon Us" Episode 311 — Pictured: Dylan Efron — (Photo by: Euan Cherry/Peacock via Getty Images) Euan Cherry/Peacock via Getty Images Vacation Plans All Over The Globe Now, as for where his summer skincare routine will end up this year? Efron offers a glimpse into his vacation plans. In addition to Europe, the thrill-seeker is 'hoping for some family time at the lake,' he says. 'There's a lake in my hometown that feels like summer to me. I'm with my high school friends and it's like 100-degrees out, and we're all trying to do 360s on a wake surf. It's peak summer to me.' Being able to immediately switch gears from European sophistication to down-home life at the lake is something is something Efron feels 'so lucky to experience at my current age,' he said. 'If I was going through this when I was 18, I'd be so lost,' he continued. 'But I know what I love. While I might be going to Milan for fashion week, I'm also going to a national park next week to fly fish, and I'm going to balance that out. So for every time I'm in a big city doing something crazy, I'm going to go to Joshua Tree and rock climbing. I love being a part of those two worlds. If I was only in Joshua tree, I would be sad and feel like [there's another life out there], but I think being able to live in both that natural world and this fun world is just such a blessing for me.'
