California is a big state with mild, sunny weather and lots to see. Still, some of the biggest, most expensive cities are not (or shouldn't be) the main attraction for families traveling with kids in tow. For this reason, I compiled a list of five compelling and very kid-friendly Airbnbs in California that might give you a different experience of the state—and one that will be truly memorable for the young ones in your brood. From magic treehouses to interactive farm stays and crazy residential arcades, here are my top picks for making memories with your children in The Golden State.
27 Kid-Friendly Airbnbs to Rent for Your Next Family Vacation
Airbnb
Enjoy a nostalgic childhood-inspired vacation in the vibrant city of San Jose with this whimsical treehouse stay. This unique place can comfortably accommodate a family of four and, while it might look scant on kid-friendly amenities, this is an experience-oriented rental that allows kids to live out childhood dreams—perhaps inspired by family-friendly movies like The Sandlot, Hook or Tarzan. In fact, the glowing five-star reviews frequently mention what a special experience it is for the kids. And, given the unique setting, I probably don't even need to mention that there's ample outdoor space available for romping around. File this one under 'magical treetop glamping.'

When it comes to paradise for kids, this impressive, gaming-themed home gives Disneyland a run for its money (literally). For starters, there's a huge arcade in the living room, plus a separate gaming lounge with a jumbotron theater. In fact, not a single room in the house is without some kind of game—the dining room and the themed bedrooms (Super Mario!) all have arcade or video games available—and that applies to the backyard, too, where there are lawn games galore. In other words, if you're aiming for a vacation with built-in kid entertainment so you can just relax, you can't do better than this.

Carnival's Marketing and Private Islands Sustain High Cruise Prices

Carnival is using aggressive marketing and exclusive destinations to sustain historically high cruise prices, even as economic uncertainty weighs on other travel sectors. Carnival is betting that splashy marketing campaigns and exclusive private islands can help the cruise giant maintain historically high pricing despite economic uncertainty. "We have proven to be incredibly resilient to the volatility around the globe," said CEO Josh Weinstein on Tuesday. Why it matters: Carnival is performing well even as economic uncertainty weighs on hotels, airlines, and other parts of the U.S. travel industry. Here are some key points from the second quarter earnings results from the world's largest cruise company. Extra Marketing Is Paying Off Carnival notably increased its "marketing spend per unit", or the ratio of marketing dollars to revenue generated, compared to pre-pandemic levels, Weinstein said. The strategy appears to be working: both new-to-cruise guests and repeat customers were up double-digit percentages last year, and positive trends are continuing this year. What's driving the trend? Marketing blitzes during major events. For instance, a promo at this year's Oscars cast a live TV spotlight onto a daring skydive into a pool aboard the Carnival Celebration ship. Weinstein credited the marketing spend for supporting record prices and onboard spending. Private Island Expansion Carnival has invested heavily in exclusive destinations to differentiate itself and collect more of guests' spending that would otherwise go to businesses at local ports of call. Weinstein flagged two efforts. Celebration Key: The company's new private destination in the Bahamas opens in July. Carnival projects that it could help drive its Caribbean guest count from 6.5 million to 11 million by the end of the decade. Located on Grand Bahama Island, it will be Carnival's largest destination. Half Moon Cay revamp: Carnival also has plans to enhance its existing private Bahamian destination, rebranding it as "RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay." The upgraded facility will include an improved beach and new pier, allowing two ships to dock simultaneously (including Carnival's largest ships visiting for the first time). It's expected to open in summer 2026. Streamlining the Cruise Giant Carnival is simplifying its portfolio through strategic exits: Ship sale: Sold the Seabourn Sojourn after receiving an unsolicited offer they "couldn't refuse," Weinstein said. Brand sunset: This spring, it folded its remaining P&O Cruises Australia ships into Carnival Cruise Line. Land/Sea Strategy With limited capacity growth at sea, Carnival is expanding its land operations. The land-sea packages are "a huge draw for new-to-cruise guests," Weinstein said. A case in point is Alaska. The company has announced a major renovation and expansion of Alaska's Denali Lodge, adding 120 new guestrooms and suites plus additional dining venues. Carnival owns eight other hotel properties in the state, and it sees offering lodging and excursions off a ship as a way to provide more wraparound services for its customers. Industry context: Carnival and its three main competitors (Royal Caribbean Group, Norwegian Cruise Line, and MSC Cruises) represent roughly 80% of cruise industry capacity. With limited new ship deliveries planned, land expansion offers an alternative growth avenue. Carnival Corp has just three ships on order over the next four years. What's next: Carnival expects to achieve its 2026 financial targets a year early, with return on invested capital hitting 12% and EBITDA per available berth day more than 50% higher than 2023 levels. How I Travel: Molly Shannon Saunas While Her Family Surfs

It's a bit surprising to learn that Molly Shannon of all people spends most of her vacations in surfing hot spots around the world, as she tells Condé Nast Traveler. What's perhaps less unexpected is that this beach bum is really, really polite to flight attendants. "Because I fly Los Angeles to New York a lot on one particular airline, I know a lot of the pilots and attendants. I've gotten to know them,' says the actress. 'I feel like we're all working together, so I say 'Good morning!'' Shannon, who's currently a partner for the supplement Proactive Support from the Makers of Tylenol, chatted about her life in a surf family (her two children are in their early twenties), cowering from monkeys in Bali, and her first-ever first class flight, which was to Budapest. Her priorities when planning a vacation: When I'm traveling for fun, definitely the beach. I love the tropical vacation. That's my favorite. Fun family dinners, reading, relaxing, swimming. I like to keep it simple. What guides their choice of destinations: We're a big Hawaii family and a big surf family. My son and husband are really big surfers and my daughter does it too. I tried it a couple of times years ago, and it's really not my thing—but I appreciate it. Taking a lesson was great. I was like, god, this requires such upper-body strength. I'm proud that I tried it! How she spends her flight time: It's a nice, quiet time to read. Sometimes I download TV shows for the plane, but mostly I read. I'll tear through a book. I don't usually work on planes. Sometimes if I'm on my way to do a job, I have to memorize lines and that's kind of a drag, so I won't do it for more than an hour at a time. The best vacation of her life so far: Bali, Indonesia. My son Nolan surfed Uluwatu. My friend Tamra Davis knows a lot about Bali, so she was like, 'You've got to go here, do this, eat at this restaurant.' It was everything I would have wanted and more—just a wonderful family vacation. We stayed at a hotel that was off-the-charts fantastic. There were so many monkeys trying to get into our room, so we were laughing and videotaping them. Sometimes [my family] would leave to go get breakfast and I'd be swimming in the pool and the monkey would come back around. Oh god, I was scared! But it was a magical vacation, with the best food. I would love to go back to Bali. The most random place she's been recognized: Nothing too weird, but my daughter was doing a semester abroad in Madrid and I felt pretty relaxed there, walking around with a baseball cap or whatever. We were in a [clothing store], and two women were really staring at me while I was shopping. Looking at me like, 'Do I know you?' Maybe they think I'm a school teacher. They were really staring! It took me by surprise.

Spirit Airlines Urges U.S. to Reject JetBlue-United Partnership

Spirit recently emerged from bankruptcy and is hoping to block new competition. But the first Trump administration approved the original Northeast Alliance. Spirit Airlines said that the proposed JetBlue-United partnership 'raises serious competition and public interest questions' in a complaint to the Department of Transportation filed on Tuesday. 'JetBlue, enticed by the benefit to its customers of United's far larger global network, will become a de facto vassal of United,' Spirit said in the complaint. The partnership, known as 'Blue Sky,' was announced in May after JetBlue executives had repeatedly said they were keen to start a new alliance with a U.S. airline. The complaint compared the JetBlue-United tie-up to the Northeast Alliance, JetBlue's partnership with American Airlines that was struck down in court on the grounds that it was anticompetitive. The JetBlue-United partnership links the two carriers' loyalty programs, but does not go so far to coordinate schedules or pricing, a key difference from the Northeast Alliance. United will also receive access to slots at New York JFK for up to seven daily flights starting as early as 2027. Spirit Says Blue Sky Is Like Northeast Alliance Spirit argues that the alliance is still similar to the Northeast Alliance since JetBlue's network decisions will be impacted by 'United's wishes and a 'combined' approach to capacity management.' The first Trump administration greenlighted the Northeast Alliance in January 2021. The ultra-low-cost carrier further argued that JetBlue would need to purchase more expensive United miles to offer the United's long-haul international routes and other routes not served by JetBlue to JetBlue's customers, driving up airfares. Spirit also said in the complaint that since the partnership 'promises coordination on high-value corporate accounts' it would further prevent new carriers from entering New York and Boston airports. JetBlue criticized Spirit's decision to file a complaint in a statement to Skift. 'Spirit's filing misrepresents Blue Sky and twists the facts about how JetBlue and United plan to deliver for customers,' JetBlue said. 'Blue Sky is built around the goal of offering more value and options for travelers. Through an industry standard loyalty program agreement, customers will gain more ways to earn and redeem points/miles and access loyalty benefits. Each airline will offer flights for sale on one another's websites and apps to make booking across the two airlines' complementary networks simple and easy.' JetBlue added it is still a competitor to United. 'Blue Sky involves an industry standard interline agreement and does not include schedule coordination or revenue sharing,' the New York-based carrier said. 'JetBlue and United will remain competitors as they each will continue to publish, price, and market flights independently under their own brand and flight numbers and make independent network decisions.' The Department of Transportation did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Spirit declined to comment on the complaint. Spirit's Makeover Spirit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year to restructure its debt due to years of losses after its merger with JetBlue was struck down in court. Since exiting Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March, Spirit has been trying to chart a new path to profitability as a standalone carrier. Some of the plans Spirit previously touted included offering free Wi-Fi to customers and adding premium seating to its cabins. The airline also appointed Sun Country executive Dave Davis to be CEO in April, shortly after Ted Christie said he would resign from the position. What am I looking at?
