On what accounts for institutional strength
'If you're an established company or founding a company, you have to come up with an idea whose time has come. In order to build that new concept, you also need to have a new capability. And in order to build
that
new capability before it's conventional wisdom, you need culture.

You have a cultural posture that allows you to either skill yourself up or get associated with other people with complementary skills that are needed to build something new that is needed in the world. That framework is how I evaluate where we are as a company, and where we need to go. And it's a harsh thing, because you kind of have to be in this continuous journey of renewal.'

On empathy as a critical workplace skill
'If you want to learn it all and not [just] know it all, that is the foundation of a growth mindset. This means you have to have empathy more than anything else, to be able to see through other people's eyes. We think of it as a soft skill for life, but it's also a critical soft skill for innovation. Because, after all, what is innovation if not meeting the unmet, unarticulated needs of customers?
You can call this a design mindset or design thinking; but really, it's empathy. It does ultimately come down to us having the ability at scale [after] seeing the world through other people's eyes.'
On AI computing being distinct from other technological breakthroughs
'When I came to the Valley in early 1990, it felt like a golden age of systems. We're back at that again. You're adding system software, whether it is what's happening at the ASIC [Application-Specific Integrated Circuit] or chip level, system level, or with model architectures. Who would've thought two years ago that soon enough, it'd be about test times and compute?
OpenAI set the pace by their innovation, and we were obviously thrilled to partner with them. But it's also great to see what's happening in open source. You're seeing reasoning models that weren't there even just a year ago. Now they're in all models, weight, and sizes. Just yesterday, we launched five new models with reasoning.
I look at my capex budget and say, 'Whoa, what happened there?' Nevertheless, the cooling in data centres is one of the biggest challenges we have. And the point is, it's differential cooling. There's an AI accelerator rack, then there's the rest.'
On AI applications in the physical sciences
'There are three broad domains for AI application. One is cognitive and knowledge work. That's our bread and butter.
The other is physical: robotics, the autonomous domain, drones, and what have you.
The third is science. The way we have been able to deal with this domain is by doing simulations. High performance computing (HPC) was fundamentally born underneath scientific simulation. But it turns out that to simulate nature right on a Von Neumann architecture, you just have approximations. There's no such thing as a perfect simulation. That's why we are very excited about even quantum because ultimately, the quantum computer is the real breakthrough at utility scale when you really think about simulating nature.
If you want to discover a new material, AI can help speed up the HPC by coming up with candidates. So we essentially have these models that are derivatives of transformers. You don't have to start without any knowledge. There's a variety of models you can get to on foundry for different domains, biology being the hardest of them all. The rapid progress right now is in computational chemistry and material sciences.'

OpenAI eyes $500 bn valuation in potential employee share sale
ChatGPT maker OpenAI is in early-stage discussions about a stock sale that would allow employees to cash out and could value the company at about $500 billion, a source familiar with the matter said. That would represent an eye-popping bump-up from its current valuation of $300 billion, with the sale underscoring both OpenAI's rapid gains in users and revenue as well as the intense competition among artificial intelligence firms to secure talented workers. The transaction, which would come before a potential IPO, would allow current and former employees to sell several billion dollars worth of shares, said the source, who requested anonymity because the talks are private. Bolstered by its flagship product ChatGPT, OpenAI doubled its revenue in the first seven months of the year, reaching an annualised run rate of $12 billion, and is on track to reach $20 billion by year-end, the source added. Microsoft-backed OpenAI has about 700 million weekly active users for its ChatGPT products, a surge from about 400 million in February. The share sale talks come on the heels of OpenAI's primary funding round announced earlier this year, which aims to raise $40 billion, led by Japan's SoftBank Group. SoftBank has until the end of the year to fund its $22.5 billion portion of the round, but the remainder has been subscribed at a valuation of $300 billion, the source said. ‘The computer will see what we see': Microsoft outlines bold AI shift in Windows 2030 vision
Microsoft has released the first in a series of videos outlining its long-term plans for the Windows operating system, under a campaign dubbed the 'Windows 2030 Vision'. The video, published this week, features David Weston, Corporate Vice President of Enterprise and Security at Microsoft, offering a glimpse into what the future of Windows could look like as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly central to computing. The company appears to be signalling a significant shift in how users interact with their devices. In the video, Weston suggests that by 2030, Windows may be driven by what Microsoft calls agentic AI, a type of AI designed to act on behalf of the user. This evolution could fundamentally alter the desktop experience, potentially reducing reliance on traditional input methods like mouse and keyboard. 'I truly believe the future version of Windows and other Microsoft operating systems will interact in a multimodal way,' Weston said. 'The computer will be able to see what we see, hear what we hear, and we can talk to it and ask it to do much more sophisticated things.' He also commented on how conventional computing methods might become outdated, likening the use of a keyboard and mouse in the future to how modern users might perceive MS-DOS, the command-line interface common in the early days of personal computing. While the video does not go into specifics, it builds on earlier comments made by Microsoft executives suggesting that AI could eventually operate within, alongside, and outside of applications. Ritvika Nagula, now a senior software engineer at Microsoft Azure, offers a blueprint for job seekers based on her own experience. Just months after graduating in 2018, she received job offers from Microsoft, Amazon, eBay, and another major tech firm. Her strategy involved more than just technical skills—it was about how she presented them on her resume and approached the application told Business Insider that for software engineering roles, the resume matters far more than a cover letter. She tailored hers to highlight all relevant experiences at the top, including internships and short-term roles such as a seven-month co-op. She made sure to structure her resume in a way that recruiters could immediately assess her also recommended categorizing projects clearly—separating academic, internship, and personal work—and including the tools and programming languages used in each. She stressed that understanding the fundamentals of coding is still necessary and that relying too much on AI might hinder deeper learning and problem-solving to her LinkedIn profile, Nagula holds a Master's degree in Computer and Information Sciences from Northeastern University and a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the National Institute of Technology, Raipur. Before joining Microsoft, she interned in machine learning at Trifacta and worked as a teaching assistant in discrete mathematics, roles that added valuable depth to her guidance comes at a time when the Indian tech industry is experiencing significant cutbacks. As reported by The Times of India, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has laid off more than 12,000 employees, and further reductions are expected, according to industry group Nasscom. Nitin Bhatt, a technology sector leader at EY India, noted that even though around 1.2 lakh jobs were added in FY25, the outlook for FY26 remains uncertain.
