Restoration of Haverfordwest Castle moves on to next stage

Restoration of Haverfordwest Castle moves on to next stage

This is part of a regeneration project led by Pembrokeshire County Council.
The redevelopment is being funded from a budget of £17.7 million provided by the UK Government as part of an initiative to rejuvenate the area.
The long-standing historical site is being converted into what promises to be a new visitor attraction for the town and the surrounding region.
Efforts over the past six months have focused on restoration of the structure by specialist conservationists, iBEX.
Archaeological excavations were also carried out by the Trust for Welsh Archaeology (Heneb), which provided valuable insights into the castle's history.
The inner bailey of the castle has received a facelift, and is being landscaped to make it more suitable for outdoor events and concerts.
Alongside this, preliminary work has begun on the conversion of the old County Gaol building into the venue for the future visitor attraction.
The forthcoming attraction within the County Gaol building is set to tell the story of Pembrokeshire's past.
Plans are nearing completion to use innovative technology and interactive displays to share tales about the county's future.
Further plans indicate a revamped Haverfordwest museum in the Governor's House, as well as free-to-access interpretation in the castle grounds.
To support this, the National Lottery Heritage Fund made a grant of £368,525 available for the design stage.
This will be for the fitting out of the attraction, with The Creative Core appointed the contract for the work.
Opportunities for public involvement in the form of focus groups, surveys and pilot workshops are to be provided throughout 2025.
Councillor Paul Miller, deputy leader and cabinet member for place, region and climate change, said: "We are excited to see this ambitious project continue apace and this next stage brings us much closer to what will be a flagship heritage attraction, boosting not only the town's economy but also the wider area."
Pembrokeshire County Council and the partner organisation, Haverfordwest Castle CIO, are actively seeking further funding with the help of professional fundraisers.
The project, which has been in planning for almost 10 years, is a collaborative effort with an active group of community stakeholders.
Councillor Thomas Tudor, the local member, said: "It is fantastic to see this project progress, our town castle really is something to be proud of and we want to make it a real destination for tourists and locals alike."
Haverfordwest Castle CIO, existing out of the stakeholder group, will be responsible for running the attraction once fully operational.
This gem at the heart of Pembrokeshire is set to provide a high-quality, year-round visitor attraction.

Diversions as Haverfordwest's Instagrammable bridge goes in

The bridge is part of the £25.4 million Heart of Pembrokeshire project to revitalise Haverfordwest and will span the water between the Riverside and Western Quay. Sections of the striking footbridge were delivered from the fabricator's workshop to County Hall in May this year when sections were assembled in situ, with a 220-ton crane also on site. (Image: Atkins Ltd) The bridge with its distinctive honeycomb design has been described as 'signature' and, subsequently, 'Instagrammable'. The bridge has come under considerable scrutiny by councillors with concerns about the bridge and potential costs being raised more than once in chamber. (Image: Peter Thomas) In April the council's Welsh Conservative group and the Independent Group both called for the decision to award the bridge contract to be scrutinised further. (Image: P Biebrach) Conservative group leader Councillor Di Clements, asked said that 'given its sizeable cost estimation and the high public interest in the matter, the Welsh Conservative group believe that this decision deserves full and proper scrutiny at committee level.' The bridge will replace the current arched red and black footbridge leading from the Riverside to the Western Quay. (Image: Google maps) That footbridge in now closed an diversions are in place while preparation work takes place. New beauty salon could open in Haverfordwest property

Yvette Carless, of Back Lane, Prendergast, Haverfordwest, has submitted the request to Pembrokeshire County Council for approval. The application, stamped by the council on June 3, outlines plans to convert the residential property into a commercial one, with a total proposed internal floor space of 44.61 m². Miss Carless has not sought any pre-application advice from the local authority, nor has she conducted any consultation with neighbours or the local community. No changes are proposed to the building's external structure, and no alterations will be made to the existing access to the public highway. The application indicates that the property will maintain its connection to the mains sewer, with no building adaptations required. The proposal does not involve any designated sites or features related to biodiversity and geological conservation, and there are no trees or hedges on the site or adjacent land. The application also states that no trade effluent is expected from the change of use. The residential property, which currently houses one full-time and one part-time employee, will be entirely converted to commercial use. The application does not specify any increase in staffing, implying a continuation of the existing arrangement. The new commercial premises will operate from Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 9pm, and on Sundays and Bank Holidays from 11.30am to 4.30pm. The property is not located within a flood risk area, and the proposal is not expected to increase flood risk. The change of use involves no industrial or commercial processes, and no hazardous substances are involved. The applicant has certified sole ownership of the property and confirmed that the land is not part of an agricultural holding.
