Good grief: Dua Lipa turns spotlight on Helen Garner's book

Here's something you don't hear every day. English-Albanian pop sensation Dua Lipa has thrown her star power behind one of Australia's most loved writers, Helen Garner. Talk about an unlikely duo.
Lipa is spotlighting Garner's This House of Grief in her popular book club this month. The 2014 non-fiction book follows the trial of Victorian man Robert Farquharson, who is serving 33 years for murdering his three sons on Father's Day in 2005.
When contacted by CBD, Garner told us she was a bit embarrassed by all the international attention – having fielded multiple media requests all day.
Luckily, Lipa had a few more words to say on social media.
'Her work is new to me and it's a thrilling discovery. She's one of the most fascinating writers I have come across in recent years,' the singer said about Garner.
'What she reveals along the way is not simply a courtroom drama but a sharp and forensic analysis of the human condition.'
Garner, who has also tackled true crime with her 2004 book, Joe Cinque's Consolation, was spotted in the courtroom for the trial of triple mushroom murderer Erin Patterson. Garner is partnering with Chloe Hooper and Sarah Krasnostein to write The Mushroom Tapes.
It turns out Lipa is somewhat of an aficionado when it comes to our local arts scene. Back in 2023, the Sydney Theatre Company's production about ex-PM Julia Gillard, Julia, was on the pop star's must-watch theatre list.

"These international stars combine with local talent ... to create bespoke invitations for five markets." Since the resumption of international travel, the domestic tourism industry has grown with the number of international arrivals expected to reach a record 10 million in 2026 and 11.8 million in 2029. More than 700,000 jobs and 360,000 Australian businesses depend on tourism. The teaser for this campaign was first launched in July during the prime minister's trip to China. The band behind some of Australia's most beloved music has been immortalised with its own laneway in Adelaide's CBD. The Angels Lane and accompanying mural were officially unveiled on Monday between TAFE SA's city west campus and Hindley Street Music Hall. Guitarist John Brewster said the band felt proud to make a permanent mark in the city that had shaped its formative years. "We've been around for a while and to have our band, our history, revisited in such an incredible way … we're very excited," he said. "Starting the beginnings of The Angels here in this town and moving to Sydney in '76, that whole experience was very memorable. "It just feels incredible. It's just such an honour and you know, we're all very proud." The band's classic 'Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again' came in at number 12 on last month's Hottest 100 of Australian Songs. Brewster said the band's first single, written by the late Doc Neeson, was "about somebody who passed away". He said he was surprised the song made it into the Hottest 100 list. "It wasn't a very big deal at the time but it seems to have become a big deal — that was incredible," Brewster said. For many Australians, the song is often accompanied by profanity-laden chant. "It's just ironic that the response that's happened, which is exactly in rhythm with my rhythm guitar, it's Australian humour and I just think it's fantastic, it's a larrikin Australian," he said. "It wouldn't happen in America." Formed in Adelaide in the 1970s, the band was inducted into the Aria Hall of Fame in 1998. Band members old and new gathered at the opening today, but with the notable absence of bass player Chris Bailey, who died of throat cancer in 2013, and lead singer Bernard "Doc" Neeson who died from a brain tumour in 2014. Brewster performs with fellow founding member and brother Rick, his sons Sam and Tom, and now-frontman Nick Norton. "Fifty years [anniversary] last year and this is year one, this is year one of the next chapter," he said. In line with Adelaide's 10th anniversary as UNESCO City of Music, Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith said the transformation of the laneway recognised The Angels' legacy. "This is special because The Angels are not just iconic, they actually produced an anthem for the whole of Australia," she said. "It is a really significant day for us because we'd been able to celebrate, commemorate and actually say thank you to a band that have made us all really happy." The Adelaide City Council assigned The Angels Lane to a private road off Gawler Place in 2019, but council documents showed building owners did not endorse the installation of public artwork and commemorative plaques. The alternate location near Morphett Street was selected last year, according to council documents. The band is among several Australian acts to have an Adelaide laneway named in their honour. Cold Chisel Lane was memorialised in 2021 near where Jimmy Barnes first joined the band almost 50 years earlier. No Fixed Address, Sia Furler and Paul Kelly have also had lanes named after them.

'Others will catch on': The Block foreman Dan Reilly says 2025 season the most competitive yet with one couple's innovative approach set be copied

The Block 2025 is set to be the most competitive season yet, as one couple's innovative approach could be copied, according to the show's foreman Dan Reilly. Nine's hit renovation series kicked off in the Victorian town of Daylesford last week, with five homes built from scratch set to go under the hammer. Unlike previous seasons, each property has the exact same floor plan, putting the Blockheads under pressure to deliver rooms with a difference. And best mates Robby and Mat haven't wasted any time, getting plans approved to install an underground wine cellar at the back of house 5. The South Australian barbers have already emerged as this season's front-runners after winning week one's bathroom reveal on Sunday. The boys claimed the victory over the other four couples with a tidy score of 26.5/30 from judges Shaynna Blaze, Darren Palmer, and Marty Fox. However, speaking to Dan suggested Robby and Mat's fall from grace is fast approaching with other couples set to match their point of difference and install other bespoke features in their homes. 'Maybe others will catch on and start come up with some good ideas,' the foreman said with a cheeky grin at the TV WEEK Logie Awards in Sydney on Sunday evening. 'Every house is the exact same footprint, so it's really up to the contestants to try and come up with ideas of how they're going to differentiate from everyone else. 'How's their design going to be? Is it going to resonate with the buyers? 'And you've got to have big weapons, like we've seen the boys do, put a wine cellar.' Dan warned the couples who don't have 'weapons' up their sleeves will get 'done' at the auctions, which will cap off the season in November. The auctions will notably not feature star bidder Adrian Portelli, also known as 'Lambo guy' for his flashy designer yellow car on set. Portelli retired his bidding paddle after purchasing all five Phillip Island homes in 2024 for $15.3 million. He had dropped a total of $31.68 million on The Block houses since his first appearance on the hit renovation series in 2022. Asked whether the Blockheads are nervous about their auctions this year without Portelli's domination, Dan said other 'big players' are out to bid. 'What's exciting about Daylesford is that it is such a place that everyone wants to get into, because the Airbnb business up there is huge,' he said. 'Plus, there are a lot of big players in town with a lot of money, and we're already hearing they're looking and very interested in buying one or two. 'So I don't think they'll get passed in, and I think we'll still see some good prices at auction.' The 2025 Block homes are expansive, with an estimated $3 million-plus price, which is costly for the Daylesford market. According to PropTrack data, the median house price in the town is $819,000, an eight per cent decrease in the year to July. Buyers advocate and The Block regular Frank Valentic cast doubt over the success of the auctions without Portelli and major bidder Danny Wallace. 'I don't think there'll be many owner/occupiers buying this series, because it is well above Daylesford's median house price,' Mr Valentic told 'If these are going to be at circa $2 million or even $3 million-plus, I don't know if they'll get that far without the Danny Wallace and Adrian Portelli factor.'
