LONDON — Saudi Minister of Commerce Dr. Majid Al-Qasabi has affirmed at the Saudi-UK Strategic Partnership Council that Saudi vision 2030 launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman transformed the Saudi economy and created promising opportunities in many vital sectors.
He explained that the Saudi-British partnership is unique, and the UK is the second-largest exporter of services in the world. He added that the two countries can cooperate to establish a global integration system that covers many aspects of sports, tourism, culture, arts, and technology, all of which have become a global language that requires no translation.
The meeting was also attended by Saudi Minister of Sports Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki, and Sir Chris Bryant, UK's Minister of State for Creative Industries, Arts and Tourism.
The roundtable, organized by the National Competitiveness Center in cooperation with the UK Department for Business and Trade, focused on introducing companies to the promising opportunities offered by the Kingdom's hosting of international sporting events, such as the 2034 World Cup. It also addressed opportunities for cooperation in areas supporting the sports sector, such as technology, infrastructure, construction, facility operations, and planning and execution of major events.
In a meeting with Jonathan Reynolds, Minister of State for Business and Trade, which was attended by Prince Khalid bin Bandar, Saudi Ambassador to UK, and Neil Crompton, British Ambassador to the Kingdom, Al-Qasabi discussed enhancing cooperation in developing the sports sector in light of Saudi hosting major events such as the 2034 World Cup. They reviewed the progress of initiatives emerging from the economic and social committees of the Saudi-British Strategic Partnership Council, including developments in the negotiations of the Free Trade Agreement between UK and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
During the meeting, the two sides highlighted the importance of the Saudi-British Future Skills Initiative and its impact on developing skills in sectors of mutual interest, in addition to the continuation of the Great Futures Initiative for 2025.
The Saudi delegation's agenda on the first day included a field visit to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and its facilities. The delegation was briefed on the facilities' capabilities and experience in hosting entertainment and sporting events.
The participating entities in the visit included the ministries of Commerce, Sports, Investment and Finance, the Supreme Committee for Hosting the 2034 World Cup, the Public Investment Fund, the National Competitiveness Center, the Saudi Business Center, the National Center for Privatization, and a number of major national companies specializing in sports events, infrastructure, and media.
Al-Qasabi arrived in the British capital, London, on a working visit, accompanied by a delegation comprising officials from nine government agencies and 30 leaders from the business sector and major national companies. The visit aims to build economic partnerships in the sports sector between the two countries, strengthen relations across various priority sectors, and raise the level of commercial partnerships.

Novelist Sally Rooney says she will support Palestine Action despite ban
LONDON — Author Sally Rooney says she will continue to support Palestine Action, despite the group being proscribed as a terrorist organisation in the UK. The award-winning Irish novelist said she intends to use the earnings of her work and her public platform to "go on supporting Palestine Action and direct action against genocide". Writing in the Irish Times, she said "if this makes me a supporter of terror under UK law, so be it". Her remarks come as Home Secretary Yvette Cooper again defended the proscription of Palestine Action, saying it is more than "a regular protest group known for occasional stunts". Palestine Action is a British pro-Palestinian direct action group that was proscribed as a terrorist organisation by the government in July. Their activities have predominantly targeted arms companies since the start of the current war in Gaza. Rooney, who wrote bestsellers including Normal People and Intermezzo, has previously been a vocal backer of the protest group, writing in the Guardian in June that proscribing them would be an "alarming attack on free speech". She was speaking after some of its members broke into RAF Brize Norton and sprayed two planes with red paint, causing damages worth an estimated £7m. Separately in 2021, she refused to allow Beautiful World, Where Are You to be translated into Hebrew by an Israeli publisher, which she said was in support of calls to boycott Israel over its policies towards Palestinians. At the time, she said it would "be an honour" to have the book translated into Hebrew by a company which shared her political position. In her latest Irish Times opinion piece, she said she will continue to use the proceeds of her work — including residuals from a BBC co-production of Normal People and Conversations with Friends — to keep supporting the group. Rooney is not currently working with the BBC on any upcoming projects and has never been a member of staff. More than 700 people have been arrested since the group was banned by the government on 5 July — including more than 500 at a demonstration in central London last week. Writing in the Observer on Sunday, Home Secretary Cooper said while many were aware of the Brize Norton incident, fewer would be aware of other incidents for which the group had claimed responsibility. For example, in August 2024 alleged Palestine Action supporters broke into Elbit Systems UK in Bristol, an Israeli defence firm that has long been a key target. Those allegations are due to come to trial in November. Eighteen people deny charges including criminal damage, assault causing actual bodily harm, violent disorder and aggravated burglary. Cooper has also referenced a so-called "Underground Manual" from the group, which she said "provides practical guidance on how to identify targets to attack and how to evade law enforcement". "These are not the actions of a legitimate protest group," Cooper said. She also said she had received "disturbing information" which "covered ideas and planning for future attacks". Rooney — who lives in the west of Ireland — wrote: "The present UK government has willingly stripped its own citizens of basic rights and freedoms, including the right to express and read dissenting opinions, in order to protect its relationship with Israel." She said "the ramifications for cultural and intellectual life in the UK... are and will be profound". Rooney's management have been contacted for comment. A BBC spokesperson said: "Matters relating to proscribed organisations are for the relevant authorities." Israel has long rejected accusations of genocide, but leading Israeli and global human rights organisations have argued that the country's conduct in the war in Gaza constitutes genocide against the Palestinian population. The war was triggered by Hamas's 7 October 2023 attack on Israel, which killed about 1,200 people and saw 251 others taken hostage. Israel's offensive has since killed more than 61,000 Palestinians, according to figures from the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry, which the UN considers reliable. — BBC

Economic relations between Morocco and Saudi Arabia are generally known for their breadth and diversity, covering several strategic sectors such as renewable energy, food industries, tourism, modern technology, and infrastructure. This wide scope reflects the shared commitment of both kingdoms to establishing a sustainable and mutually beneficial model of economic cooperation. Importantly, the July 2025 visit of a high-level delegation from the Federation of Saudi Chambers to Morocco represented a significant milestone in fostering bilateral economic cooperation. Furthermore, the visit featured the signing of several investment partnership agreements and unleashed new horizons for discussions on establishing direct sea and air routes between the two countries, as well as exchanging expertise in industry and technological innovation. In what ways does Saudi Vision 2030 align with Morocco's development strategies across various investment sectors? Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 and Morocco's New Development Model converge on various strategic objectives, particularly the pursuit of a diversified and sustainable economy that ensures both social justice and environmental sustainability. This alignment mirrors the shared commitment of both countries to accelerating development by enhancing key sectors such as industry, renewable energy, digital transformation, and by increasing mutual investment opportunities. Both Saudi Vision 2030 and Morocco's New Development Model set the empowerment of the private sector as a top priority, by providing an attractive investment climate, empowering entrepreneurship and startups, and driving job creation — all of which contribute to boosting sustainable economic growth. In addition, both visions prioritize the development of human capital by developing education and training systems, promoting skills to meet the evolving demands of the labor market, and broadening opportunities for professional integration and personal growth, specifically among youth. Therefore, this convergence of visions and approaches offers fertile ground for signing strategic partnerships between the two kingdoms, partnerships that serve the interests of both nations and their brotherly peoples. It also depicts a spirit of cooperation, integration, and joint action aimed at fulfilling sustainable economic and social development at both the national and regional levels. What incentives and facilitative measures does the Moroccan government provide to support Saudi investors? Morocco stands out as a captivating investment hub, offering a stable and attractive business environment, underpinned by political stability, ongoing economic reforms, as well as progressive legislation. These incentives include specialized and well-equipped industrial zones, attractive tax advantages, and world-class infrastructure spanning ports, airports, highways, telecommunications, and energy networks. Likewise, the Kingdom offers strong institutional support through regional investment centers, advisory and monitoring mechanisms, and simplified administrative procedures, ensuring faster project implementation and higher returns for investors. This strategic orientation embodies Morocco's commitment to fostering its economic partnership with its sisterly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and to strengthening cooperation across diverse sectors—ranging from industry, agriculture, and tourism to renewable energy, financial services, and other high value-added fields.
