Kim Kardashian Was Bound and Gagged as Thieves Robbed Her in Paris a Decade Ago. Now, 10 People Face Trial
The trial for the suspects involved in the armed robbery of Kim Kardashian during Paris Fashion Week in 2016 began Monday, April 28.
Ten people are expected to appear in court to face charges in connection with the heist, according to the New York Times, NBC News and ABC News. PEOPLE learned in March that the SKIMS co-founder, 44, will testify in person at the trial.
On Oct. 6, 2016, armed thieves broke into Kardashian's room at the No Address hotel in Paris, where they bound and gagged her before putting her in a bathtub. As they held her hostage, five masked men stole millions of dollars worth of jewelry from the reality star in the middle of the night, PEOPLE previously reported.
"They put plastic ties around her wrists, but she managed to squeeze her hands out of the wrist ties by wriggling her hands," a source close to Kardashian told PEOPLE in 2016. After escaping, a second source told PEOPLE that Kardashian "screamed from the balcony" for help.
Kardashian has said the robbers took two diamond Cartier bracelets, a gold and diamond Jacob necklace, Lorraine Schwartz diamond earrings, a gold Rolex and other items during the heist, according to French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche. A $4 million ring gifted to her by then-husband Kanye West was also among the items stolen.
According to the Times, the stolen jewelry was estimated to be worth nearly $9 million and most of it was never recovered.

The reality star opened up about the ordeal in a 2017 episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
"They ask for money. I said I don't have any money," she told her sisters in the episode. "They dragged me out on to the hallway on top of the stairs. That's when I saw the gun clear, like clear as day. I was kind of looking at the gun, looking down back at the stairs."
"I was like; 'I have a split second in my mind to make this quick decision," she continued. "Am I going to run down the stairs and either be shot in the back? It makes me so upset to think about it. Either they're going to shoot me in the back, or if I make it and they don't, if the elevator does not open in time, or the stairs are locked, then like I'm f—ed. There's no way out."
Kardashian herself has said she believed the perpetrators tracked her via social media.
"I was Snapchatting that I was home and that everyone was going out," she explained in the episode. "So I think they knew Pascal [her bodyguard] was out with Kourtney and that I was there by myself."

French police initially arrested 17 suspects across France in connection with the armed robbery in January 2017. Now, 10 of them — half of them being alleged accomplices — are facing trial. One of the men indicted by prosecutors is the younger brother of Kardashian's Paris chauffeur.
The group was dubbed the "Grandpa robbers" by French media due to their ages and previous criminal history, according to ABC News.

Aomar Ait Khedache, who is believed to have orchestrated the heist, has apologized to Kardashian in a letter written from his prison cell, the Associated Press previously reported.
According to the AP, Yunice Abbas, one of the suspects on trial, has admitted to his involvement in the robbery and even co-wrote a book about the ordeal in 2021 titled 'I Sequestered Kim Kardashian.' In a statement shared with the AP this month, the 71-year-old said, 'I will apologize. I mean it sincerely.'
Days before the trial began, Kardashian posted an Instagram carousel with photos from her recent trip to Maui, including one of her diamond anklets.

Yukon Public Libraries introduces summer reading passport
June 13 is the last day of school for most students across the territory. As kids spill out the doors of schools and into the sunshine, the Yukon Public Libraries is introducing an initiative to make sure they don't leave their books behind. For the first time, Yukon Public Libraries is launching the Summer Reading Passport Program across all 15 libraries in the territory: the English-language passports are available at the Whitehorse library, and will be arriving at community libraries in the coming days. There will also be French language passports available. The passport looks akin to the Canadian passport, dimension-wise, said Drew Whittaker, the public programs librarian with Yukon Libraries. Inside, artwork done by local artist Dan Bushnell adorns the stamp pages, inspired by Yukon nature and wildlife, Whittaker said. Interested children will be given passports and be encouraged to come up with a summer reading goal in consultation with their families, he said. 'Maybe it's about numbers of books, but it doesn't have to go numbers of books,' Whittaker said. 'Maybe it's about the type of books that kids want to read, and it's also there's a chance for kids to kind of reflect on reading something new…' The librarian will sign off on a child's reading goal, and stamp the reader's passport as they move towards their goal, he said. 'They take their passport with them. They check out books. They read, read, read all summer long, books from the library, books from home, books from those small community library boxes. They read comic books. They just read as much as they can. They keep track of it, loosely. Keep track, and then they get their passport stamped at any Yukon Public Library location,' he said. Aside the gift of reading, children will also receive a medal at summer's end to reward them for their reading, Whittaker said. All 15 libraries will hold a community event to honour those that have achieved their reading goals, he said. Reading is a radical and revolutionary thing, Whittaker said. It preserves and shares information with others across space and time, he added. 'The value of reading to children is about interacting with their world, is about deeper, enriching experiences with their world. It's about being able to share, communicate their ideas. It's about opening their lives into human creative processes, of which, writing, discussing, debating, is part of our intellectual human existence,' he said. Reading and writing are also important for a child's future, be it education or employment, he said. A good foundation in literacy is connected to better life outcomes, he said. This is the first year the program is running, although previous years have seen similar programs imported from outside the Yukon, said Whittaker. Whittaker said creating a made-in-Yukon version was discussed for years. 'We like the made-in-Yukon approach. We are a different place. I think we're very keenly aware of how, of the differences up here, and often think like, oh yeah, we can do it. We can do our own and it'll be better,' he said. 'Libraries are institutions that are constantly changing, with changing technology and changing community needs. As a result of the above, Lively, 37, "respectfully requests that she be relieved from producing documents responsive to" related requests from Baldoni's team, per the letter. An attorney for Baldoni, 41, did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment on Friday, June 13. Swift, 35, was previously roped into the Lively v. Wayfarer Studios et al. case, but Baldoni dropped his document subpoena issued to the pop star last month, as mentioned in Hudson's new letter submitted to the court on Friday. As reflected in today's filing, their intent to drag Taylor Swift into this was evident as far back as August 2024, when the crisis PR firm led by Melissa Nathan included her in their 'Scenario Planning' document (Lively Amended Complaint, Exhibit D) and flagged the 'TS fanbase' as something to take 'extremely seriously' (Lively Amended Complaint, ¶214(b)). The ongoing attempts to once again try and use the world's biggest star as a PR tactic in this matter reflects a public unraveling of epic proportions — and serves only to distract from the fact that Justin Baldoni's lawsuits against Ms. Lively, Ryan Reynolds, their publicist, and the New York Times have been entirely dismissed." Braun, 43, has notably long been embroiled in legal battles with Lively's friend Swift regarding the latter's music masters, which she just regained control of in late May. Meanwhile, news of the Another Simple Favor actress's move against Braun came two days after Judge Liman dismissed the $400 million countersuit that Baldoni previously filed against Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds, their publicist Leslie Sloane and The New York Times.
