Pixel 10 series in the US drops physical SIM, while the rest of the world gets to keep it
Instead, the phones rely on dual eSIMs, with the option of storing over eight eSIM profiles.

Google's new Pixel 10 lineup has made a rather bold connectivity choice. The Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL sold in the US won't come with a physical SIM slot. This will make the new Pixels the first in Google's history to ship without a nano-SIM slot, relying completely on eSIMs instead.
In the US, Google's latest flagships will support two active eSIM profiles at the same time and can store eight or more eSIMs on the device. The only Pixel 10 device to still sport a nano-SIM slot and eSIM is the Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
Outside the US, however, Pixel 10, 10 Pro, and 10 Pro XL buyers will still get the option of a single nano-SIM slot alongside eSIM support, a move that seems to account for varying carrier infrastructure and eSIM adoption rates around the world. So if you're in the UK, India, Australia, Germany, Italy, France, or even Canada, you'll get the nano-SIM + eSIM version of the Pixel 10, 10 Pro, and 10 Pro XL.
While Google's decision to ditch physical SIMs in the US for the Pixel 10 lineup can be viewed as the company embracing flexibility for frequent travelers and those juggling multiple lines, it could also prove problematic under certain situations.

On paper, eSIM-only phones make all the sense in the world. You don't have to mess around with SIM trays or fiddle with ejector pins. There's also no risk of losing the tiny SIM card. Moreover, switching carriers is a matter of minutes via a quick QR code scan or an app.

However, as my own recent experience with a broken iPhone and a stranded eSIM reminded me, the technology isn't completely foolproof. If your phone dies or is destroyed, transferring an eSIM can be a bit more complicated than swapping in another physical SIM card, especially if you're traveling away from home or in a country where remote eSIM reactivation isn't as straightforward.

Carriers, particularly in emerging markets, still lag in eSIM infrastructure, and budget or mid-range devices often skip the feature entirely to save costs.
That said, Apple made the US iPhone lineup eSIM-only way back in 2022, and now Google is following suit with the Pixel 10 series. While it's not necessarily a bad move, it begs the question: should manufacturers prioritize technical progress, or should they also give users the flexibility of a physical SIM slot for emergencies? That way, Japan is in a sweet spot, where Google is offering an option to pick up a Pixel 10 either with a nano-SIM + eSIM combination or in the dual-eSIM configuration.

Google has been rumored to be planning new satellite features for its Find Hub, and we finally got an idea of what this could mean during the recent Made by Google event. All three phones look to be pretty substantial upgrades, with improved AI features courtesy of Google Gemini, including Magic Cue, which appears to be an evolution of the autofill tool we've all been using for passwords and contact details for years. Google's Pixel 10 launch wasn't about the phones but the strategic AI play
While Google made a big splash with its Pixel 10 series of smartphones, it was the software features that were strategically important for the tech giant's bid to compete with players like OpenAI and Perplexity in consumer AI. As it introduced its latest devices on Wednesday, Alphabet-owned Google showed off a slew of artificial intelligence features that are powered by the firm's Gemini AI models. "Magic Cue," for example, can scour various apps for information and deliver it to users when required. "Camera Coach" can give users tips on how to adjust framing and other aspects of a picture for the perfect shot. Live translation for phone calls is also available. All of this gives a glimpse into the so-called "agentic AI" future that tech giants are hoping to reach, where super-smart AI assistants can carry out complex tasks. It is a pivotal time for Google to come up with answers, as fears mount that users and revenue from its core search product could be eroded as more people turn to rivals like Perplexity and OpenAI's ChatGPT. Before Google lies a unique opportunity — the company develops Android, the operating system that is installed across more than three billion devices globally, many of which are smartphones. "The company is leapfrogging rivals like OpenAI and DeepSeek by leveraging its access to billions of Android users, enabling a more effective distribution, integration, and a wider range of use cases for Gemini at scale," Neil Shah, partner at Counterpoint Research, told CNBC. Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, said the smartphone is the "most pervasive consumer device on the planet" and that Google now has an "opportunity to get people hooked on Gemini." Google doesn't need to sell a high volume of Pixel phones to find AI success with consumers. In fact, Pixel had just a 0.3% share of the global smartphone market in the first half of the year, compared to 23% for Samsung and 11.8% for Apple, according to the International Data Corporation. But Google's aim with its smartphones is to show off the best that Android has to offer in terms of software and AI. At that point, Android licensers, which include the likes of Samsung and Xiaomi, may adopt some of those features on their new handsets. This cycle would in turn spread Google's Gemini and AI tools to more users. "This massive user base creates a "flywheel effect" of adoption, usage, and feedback, further solidifying Gemini's position as a master agent on the most widely used device on the planet—the smartphone," Shah said. The timing is also advantageous because of struggles at rival Apple. The Cupertino giant's lack of AI strategy has concerned investors, with the iPhone showing very few features compared to Google's offerings. "Google has their tails up because Apple has dropped the ball. When Apple gets AI right it will be a fantastic experience. But right now, Google and all Android licensees have a window of opportunity," Wood said. Yet while there is now a land grab for users between major AI players, questions still linger over how Google will eventually monetize its AI services.

Apple iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro Release Date: New Report Specifies Key Dates
Updated Aug. 21 with more details of the schedule and whether a new leak, ostensibly from Apple, can be believed (spoiler: it can't, but it's not all bad news). Press reports can help us to know exactly when the next iPhones will go on sale. Here's the news on the latest analysis that can be trusted, and how it could be just days until we can be near-certain of what's coming when. A new report claims that Apple just accidentally leaked the date of the keynote. Should you believe it? More on that below. Apple's biggest event of the year, the release of the iPhone 17 series, is just weeks away — well, it's always September (pandemic year apart), so that's not exactly great intel. But in just over one week, we'll have enough information to know exactly when the iPhones will go on sale. Analysis is becoming more widespread, with key sources adding considered opinions. The truth is that, unless there's an upset, and this is Apple, so nothing can be ruled out, the iPhone 17 series, plus up to three new Apple Watches, will go on sale in the week after the keynote. So, as soon as we know the keynote date, the rest of the schedule falls into place with the dull glow of inevitability. Additionally, the keynote almost always takes place in the second full week of September, which this year begins on Monday, Sept. 8. Leading tech journalist Sean Keach from U.K. newspaper The Sun has just published his own thoughts, in a post headed, 'I'm convinced I know exact iPhone 17 release date WEEKS before big Apple reveal – and I guessed last year's right too.' I am, of course, too modest to add, you and me both, Sean. 'Apple usually shows off its blockbuster iPhone for the year in September. It's typically in the first half of the month on a Tuesday or Wednesday,' Keach says. That's true, but let's remember that last year Apple surprised some pundits by holding the keynote on a Monday. However, I've been saying for some weeks that the keynote will almost certainly be on Tuesday, Sept. 9 this year. 'I'm guessing that the iPhone 17 launch will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 9,' Keach believes, and that chimes with what I believe. Some websites are covering news of Apple accidentally posting the date and time of the keynote in the Apple TV app before quickly taking it down. The bad news: it's a fake, and the AppleLeaker X account that posted it has since added, 'I have been informed that this leak was fabricated.' The good news: at least the fake intel has the same date, Sept. 9. It would be more confusing if they'd faked it with a different date. 'Working backwards… I'd guess that Apple will announce its event via invitations on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2025,' Keach believes. I agree. I'll go further and suggest you look out for an announcement of the keynote date at around 8 a.m Pacific, 11 a.m. Eastern, 4 p.m U.K. on that day As soon as that announcement is made, everything else falls into place. To add more flesh to the bones of the schedule, it means, if it is Sept. 9, that pre-orders will open on Friday, Sept. 12. Usually, this will take place at 5 a.m. Pacific, 8 a.m. Eastern, 1 p.m. U.K. It's worth checking out the Apple website the day before, though, as sometimes Apple lets you put the phone of your choice in the shopping bag, so you can snag the model, color and storage you want, so you're ready to go the moment the pre-orders open. In turn, this would mean that the phones and watches will go on sale on Friday, Sept. 19. Keach echoes these dates. Of course, we could both be wrong, but the addition of a respected writer (with a history of accurate predictions) with the exact same dates helps cement their likelihood.
