Google's Pixel 10 launch wasn't about the phones but the strategic AI play

CNBC2 hours ago
While Google made a big splash with its Pixel 10 series of smartphones, it was the software features that were strategically important for the tech giant's bid to compete with players like OpenAI and Perplexity in consumer AI.
As it introduced its latest devices on Wednesday, Alphabet-owned Google showed off a slew of artificial intelligence features that are powered by the firm's Gemini AI models. "Magic Cue," for example, can scour various apps for information and deliver it to users when required. "Camera Coach" can give users tips on how to adjust framing and other aspects of a picture for the perfect shot. Live translation for phone calls is also available.
All of this gives a glimpse into the so-called "agentic AI" future that tech giants are hoping to reach, where super-smart AI assistants can carry out complex tasks.
It is a pivotal time for Google to come up with answers, as fears mount that users and revenue from its core search product could be eroded as more people turn to rivals like Perplexity and OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Before Google lies a unique opportunity — the company develops Android, the operating system that is installed across more than three billion devices globally, many of which are smartphones.
"The company is leapfrogging rivals like OpenAI and DeepSeek by leveraging its access to billions of Android users, enabling a more effective distribution, integration, and a wider range of use cases for Gemini at scale," Neil Shah, partner at Counterpoint Research, told CNBC.
Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, said the smartphone is the "most pervasive consumer device on the planet" and that Google now has an "opportunity to get people hooked on Gemini."
Google doesn't need to sell a high volume of Pixel phones to find AI success with consumers. In fact, Pixel had just a 0.3% share of the global smartphone market in the first half of the year, compared to 23% for Samsung and 11.8% for Apple, according to the International Data Corporation.
But Google's aim with its smartphones is to show off the best that Android has to offer in terms of software and AI. At that point, Android licensers, which include the likes of Samsung and Xiaomi, may adopt some of those features on their new handsets.
This cycle would in turn spread Google's Gemini and AI tools to more users.
"This massive user base creates a "flywheel effect" of adoption, usage, and feedback, further solidifying Gemini's position as a master agent on the most widely used device on the planet—the smartphone," Shah said.
The timing is also advantageous because of struggles at rival Apple. The Cupertino giant's lack of AI strategy has concerned investors, with the iPhone showing very few features compared to Google's offerings.
"Google has their tails up because Apple has dropped the ball. When Apple gets AI right it will be a fantastic experience. But right now, Google and all Android licensees have a window of opportunity," Wood said.
Yet while there is now a land grab for users between major AI players, questions still linger over how Google will eventually monetize its AI services.

Zeta Global (ZETA) Tumbles as AI Dreams Turn to Nightmares

We recently published . Zeta Global Holdings Corp. (NYSE:ZETA) is one of Wednesday's worst performers. Zeta Global Holdings Corp. (NYSE:ZETA) dropped for a second day on Wednesday, shedding 4.42 percent to end at $18.17 apiece as investors unloaded positions in Artificial Intelligence companies amid concerns about a bubbling industry. This followed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's comments over the weekend that an 'AI bubble is forming' amid the increased spending in the industry. Myimagine/ 'When bubbles happen, smart people get overexcited about a kernel of truth,' Altman was quoted as saying in an interview with reporters. 'Are we in a phase where investors as a whole are overexcited about AI? My opinion is yes. Is AI the most important thing to happen in a very long time? My opinion is also yes,' he added. Altman appeared to compare such a dynamic to the infamous dot-com bubble, a stock market crash centered on internet-based firms that led to a massive investor enthusiasm during the late 1990s. Between 2000 and 2002, the tech-heavy Nasdaq wiped out nearly 80 percent of its value after many of the companies failed to generate revenues and profits. Zeta Global Holdings Corp. (NYSE:ZETA), an AI-powered marketing cloud, saw its net loss in the second quarter of the year narrow by 54 percent to $12.8 million from $28.1 million in the same period last year. Revenues grew by 35 percent to $308 million from $227.8 million year-on-year. While we acknowledge the potential of ZETA as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and have limited downside risk. The Pixel 10 Pro's new always-on display finally shows your full wallpaper

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority TL;DR The Google Pixel 10 Pro has a new feature that allows you to show your lock screen wallpaper on the always-on display (AOD). Your wallpaper is dimmed and blurred so as to not interfere with other elements on the AOD. Due to the feature's display requirement, it won't be available on the base Pixel 10. Google launched the Pixel 10 the other day, and as usual, the new phones come with a host of smaller features that weren't highlighted during the launch event. One notable addition is the ability to show your lock screen wallpaper on the always-on display (AOD). While this feature isn't entirely new to the Pixel lineup — the Pixel 3 briefly had a version of it — it now returns with a significant upgrade. On the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL, the AOD can now display the full wallpaper, rather than just a small portion. Don't want to miss the best from Android Authority? This feature's arrival isn't a surprise, as we first discovered it in an Android 16 beta back in late May. At the time, however, it wasn't fully functional on any of our test devices. In our initial hands-on with this 'Ambient AOD' feature, we observed periodic screen flickering on existing Pixel models. This led us to theorize that the feature was intended for new hardware with upgraded displays — a theory confirmed by its availability on the Pixel 10 Pro. To show your Pixel 10 Pro's wallpaper on the AOD, go to Settings > Display > Always-on display and toggle 'Show lock screen wallpaper,' as shown below: Then, press the power button to turn off the display, and you should see your wallpaper on the AOD. It will appear blurred and dimmed to conserve power, reduce distractions, and keep other AOD information visible. This adds a delightful bit of personalization that feels right in line with Google's new Material 3 Expressive design, which places a heavy emphasis on blur and personalization. We're not entirely sure why this feature is only available on the Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL, but it could be due to the two devices supporting LTPO. The base Pixel 10 does not support LTPO and thus can only switch between 60 and 120Hz refresh rates, versus the more adaptive refresh rates available on the Pro models. If this is the reason, then it's reasonable to assume the feature might come to other Pixels with LTPO, but we'll have to wait and see. Regardless, multiple non-Pixel devices have had this feature for a while, so it's still good to see Google finally catch up. Follow

This upcoming Google Maps feature could be a game-changer for group planning (APK teardown)

Andy Walker / Android Authority TL;DR Google Maps is working on a new feature that will make it easier to share a list of search results with others. This new share feature creates a shareable list of the first ten search results from any query. This new functionality could simplify group planning, such as deciding on a restaurant, when it goes live. Google Maps is a great resource for discovering services and local businesses around you. However, there's plenty that Google can do to improve the discovery process, especially in collaborative settings. If you have ever tried to make some plans with your friends and looked up restaurants on Google Maps, you'll know what I am talking about — finding options is easy, but sharing a couple of them to reach a consensus is rather cumbersome. Google seems intent on tackling this problem, as we've now spotted the ability to create easily shareable lists from Google Maps' search results. When users search for something in a specific area on Google Maps, they are greeted with a number of results. Users can scroll through the results and narrow down on a couple of listings, but sharing this list forward with others is a big pain. Most of the time, you will end up sharing either the search result as a whole, or these listings individually. Savvy users will create a list from these search results and share it forward, but it's still a fairly cumbersome multi-step process. Google Maps v25.34.00 includes code that allows sharing search results as a list with others. We managed to activate the feature ahead of release to give you an early look: The example above shows that the search results for 'restaurants' includes a share button. Tapping on this share button will create a list of the first ten restaurant listings from the searched area and present you with a link that can easily be shared with others. The share button is essentially creating a list for you; hence, you can name the list, give it a description, and an icon before sharing it. If the search results exceed ten, the list will restrict itself to the first ten results. However, you can unselect any listing from these results before sharing the list, giving you a bit more control. Don't want to miss the best from Android Authority? Here's a video demo of the feature in action: While we use restaurants as an example, the feature will seemingly work with all search terms commonly used within Google Maps. The ability to easily share search results isn't currently live within Google Maps. We'll keep you updated when we learn more. ⚠️ An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release. Follow
