14-hour water interruptions to affect these Johannesburg areas
Residents in Abbatoir and Market areas may experience low pressure or no water during this period. Johannesburg Water advised that, once maintenance is completed, it could take up to three days for the water supply to normalise fully.
The purpose of this upgrade is to ensure long-term benefits for residents.
'The replacement of these meters is part of our ongoing commitment to improve service delivery and ensure continuity of water supply,' said Johannesburg Water.
Furthermore, the scheduled maintenance is expected to benefit customers by enhancing meter accuracy and reducing long-term service disruptions. Affected residents are encouraged to store water before the interruption and use it sparingly during recovery.
Johannesburg Water has taken over all billing responsibilities for water and sanitation services from the City of Johannesburg as of 1 July to strengthen operations. This transition is expected to streamline customer service and improve billing accuracy.
'This strategic transition marks a turning point in our continuous commitment to improve service delivery, enhance operational efficiency, and improving accuracy in billing, therefore ensuring greater accountability in our customer billing processes,' said Johannesburg Water Managing Director Ntshaveni Mukwevho.
Also, the shift was carefully planned to ensure minimal disruption, and officials believe the change will lead to faster query resolutions and more innovation in addressing customer needs.

Why 85% of applicants don't comply with SPAZA shop fund
Four months since its launch, the R500-million spaza shop fund has failed to reach initial expectations. The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition revealed recently that the spaza shop fund has attracted more than 10 000 applications. However, a worryingly low amount of spaza shop fund applications have meant compliance requirements. As such, applications have had to be split into two categories. The first group, made up of 14% who comply. And a second group of the remaining 86%, 'who do not yet meet requirements' but will be assisted. Experts say if you include South Africa's informal sector, the country's unemployment rate is actually closer to 10%, and not 33% as reported by Stats SA. Image: File A group representing the informal traders says government's 'rigid compliance criteria' is to blame for the low uptake, reports Daily Maverick . The fund is the brainchild of the Minister of Small Business Development, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams. And it came about following the 2024 poisoning of several young children. However, the South African Spaza Shops Association's Kgothatso Ramautswa, says it is 'deeply concerned' by the lack of compliance: 'This is not a reflection of spaza shop owners, but rather a failure of government to design a realistic funding support system. The fund is failing its intended beneficiaries. If 86% are non-compliant, the problem lies in the system, not the people,' Ramautswa says. South Africa's tax-free informal sector is worth billions, say economists. And the fund is a way to 'get them on the books.' Image: File However, in the face of such low compliance, the department says it will provide non-financial support. This will include assistance in applying for the necessary documentation through their local municipality for spaza shop fund applicants. The current maximum funding available per spaza shop fund is R100 000. And this is offered as a blended finance instrument, with a 50% grant and 50% interest-free loan. The debt portion of which is repayable with zero interest. As a reminder, the government's R100 000 per qualifying owner is made up like so. R40 000 for stock purchases, R10 000 for business training and R50 000 for infrastructure upgrades. As such, the package is designed to promote sustainability, competitiveness and regulatory compliance versus larger retailers. As of now, no spaza shop fund applications have actually been denied. However, in future they could be for the following non-compliance: Applicant is not a South African citizen. If the applicant is misrepresenting ownership or control of the business. Any fraudulent or misrepresentation documents in the application. Invalid or non-existent trading permit or a business licence. Use of funding for personal or non-business-related purposes. Gwyneth Paltrow steps up as spokesperson amid scandal
Gwyneth Paltrow, the ex-wife of Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, has taken on the role of 'temporary spokesperson' for the data automation company Astronomer. This follows a viral scandal that shook the business world. The CEO, Andy Byron, and the Chief People Officer, Kristin Cabot, caught public attention when they shared an intimate embrace. This sparked intense scrutiny on the company. They were caught on a kiss-cam during a Coldplay concert in Boston on 16 July 2025. This incident sparked widespread rumours of an affair and ultimately led to both executives' resignations, according to Page Six. In a tongue-in-cheek video released on Astronomer's LinkedIn and other social media pages on 25 July 2025, Paltrow introduced herself with a smile. 'I've been hired on a very temporary basis to speak on behalf of the 300-plus employees at Astronomer.' She addressed the flood of questions the company had received lately, deftly sidestepping the allegations of a scandalous affair. When the on-screen text posed the question 'OMG! What the actual f—,' she replied with a quip.'Yes! Astronomer is the best place to run Apache Airflow,' referring to the firm's data workflow software. She added, 'We're thrilled to see so many people suddenly interested in data workflow automation.' The actress continued by responding to another question about managing social media. She also seized the opportunity to promote the company's upcoming Beyond Analytics event in September, inviting people to join. In her closing remarks, Paltrow said, 'Now, we'll return to what we do best… delivering game-changing results for our customers. Thank you for your interest in Astronomer.' This light-hearted video aimed to reclaim the narrative and restore confidence in Astronomer after the unexpected negative attention. Chris Martin himself joked about the viral moment during the Boston concert, saying, 'Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy,' which further fueled the online buzz. Following the scandal, both Andy Byron and Kristin Cabot resigned swiftly. The incident also drove a surge in Coldplay's streaming numbers, with a 25% rise in on-demand audio streams reported in the days after the concert. This showed how a viral scandal can unexpectedly benefit the band's popularity. She made light of the situation while focusing on the company's strengths. By leveraging her public profile, particularly as Martin's former wife, Astronomer has managed to soften the blow. The company redirect attention to its core business in data automation, a field increasingly relevant worldwide, including South Africa's growing tech sector. Industry observers have described the exchange as 'a clever PR move.' They noted that Paltrow's involvement brings a blend of humour and star power that helps Astronomer emerge from the scandal with a refreshed public image. Sweden opens new honorary consulate in Cape Town
The Embassy of Sweden has officially opened a new consulate in Cape Town, expanding its diplomatic footprint across the Western and Eastern Cape. The move underscores Sweden's longstanding commitment to South Africa and aims to enhance cooperation in trade, innovation, education, and social development. The consulate hopes to bring consular and developmental services closer to local communities while strengthening bilateral ties rooted in shared values and historical solidarity – dating back to Sweden's support for the anti-apartheid movement. Entrepreneur and social innovator Carl Fredrik Sammeli, founder of Bitprop, has been appointed honorary consul. Bitprop helps township homeowners develop rental units on their properties, supporting inclusive economic growth through micro-development. Sammeli, who has close ties to both Sweden and South Africa, said: 'South Africa and Sweden are both home to me and my family. I aim to connect communities, businesses and ideas.' In Langa, township resident Nonkosi Klaas used Bitprop's model to build backyard rental units, securing a steady income stream – an example of the type of community-level impact the consulate hopes to amplify. The consulate will: Provide consular services for Swedish citizens in the region Support South African businesses exploring trade and investment links with Sweden Facilitate academic exchanges, innovation hubs, and educational collaborations Host outreach and cultural events promoting gender equality and climate action Sweden's Ambassador to South Africa described the opening as a reaffirmation of the two nations' 'mutual vision for justice, sustainability, and inclusive prosperity.' The consulate is expected to serve as both a practical support base and a symbolic extension of Sweden's enduring solidarity with South Africa.
