Scottie Scheffler calls Tiger Woods comparisons ‘silly' after his Open triumph
Only 15-time major winner Woods has done it quicker, in three years.
The numbers continue to stack up for the world number one, whose 17-under total gave him a four-stroke victory at Royal Portrush but belied how comfortable his win was.

On Saturday evening Rory McIlroy, a five-time major winner who himself completed the Grand Slam at the Masters in April, said Scheffler was 'inevitable' and his play is giving off a Woods-type aura.
He is 111 under par in majors since the beginning of 2020, 46 shots better than anyone else, and is four from four when it comes to converting 54-hole major leads (Woods won his first 14) and has been world number one for 112 consecutive weeks.
'I still think they're a bit silly,' Scheffler said of the Woods comparison.
'Tiger won, what, 15 majors? This is my fourth. I just got one-fourth of the way there.
'I think Tiger stands alone in the game of golf. He was inspirational for me growing up. He was a very, very talented guy, and he was a special person to be able to be as good as he was at the game of golf.

'I don't focus on that kind of stuff. That's not what motivates me. I'm not motivated by winning championships. I don't look at the beginning of the year and just say 'Hey, I want to win X amount of tournaments, I want to win whatever it is'.
'I have dreams and aspirations that I think about, but at the end of the day I feel like what motivates me is just getting out and getting to live out my dream.
'I get to play professional golf, and I feel like I'm called to do it to the best of my ability.
'I don't place much emphasis on things that I can accomplish. It's just mostly about putting in the proper work and coming out here and competing.
'I've always done my best when I'm able to live in the present.'
On Tuesday Scheffler gave a surprisingly revealing press conference at which he admitted being successful at golf did not fulfil him and he prioritises being a good husband and father over anything.

After winning the Claret Jug he felt his comments were taken out of context and insisted he was not disrespecting the game or making light of his achievements.
'I think it really underestimates what I was trying to communicate. Maybe I didn't do as effective of a job as I hoped to in communicating that,' he added.
'At the end of the day, I have a tremendous amount of gratitude towards moments like these.
'I literally worked my entire life to become good at this game and play this game for a living. It's one of my greatest joys of my life to compete out here.
'To be able to win The Open Championship here at Portrush is a feeling that's really hard to describe.
'This is amazing to win the Open Championship, but at the end of the day, having success in life, whether it be in golf, work, whatever it is, that's not what fulfils the deepest desires of your heart.
'Am I grateful for it? Do I enjoy it? Oh, my gosh, yes, this is a cool feeling.
'It's just tough to describe when you haven't lived it.'

Sergio Garcia makes Ryder Cup captaincy feelings clear as Spain confirmed as host
Europe and USA clash returns to Spain 34 years after the Valderrama classic Sergio Garcia admitted it would be an honour to be a Ryder Cup captain just 48 hours before the 2031 matches were confirmed for a return to his homeland. The clash between Europe and United States in six years time will be staged at Camiral in Costa Brava, near Barcelona. Camiral will follow September's clash at Bethpage Black in New York, Adare Manor in Ireland in 2027 and the 2029 staging at Hazeltine in Minnesota. It will be the second time Spain has hosted the Ryder Cup 34 years after the legendary Seve Ballesteros captained Europe to victory at Valderrama in 1997. Spain will become the first country in continental Europe to host more than one Ryder Cup with a rich history including 11 Spaniards playing, as well as Ballesteros and Jose-Maria Olazabal being winning captains. Garcia is also the all-time record points scorer from either side with 28-and-a-half points from his 10 appearances. After his final round at The Open on Sunday, Garcia was asked a variety of questions about his chances of making this year's team for Bethpage. Ironically, within that particular interview, Garcia was also asked if, regardless of what happens in September, captaincy was back on the table for him in the future. He responded: 'I don't want to think about it yet, but it's something that obviously would be a nice thing, a nice honour to have. I really don't want to think about that right now. I've got my mind on other things.' Garcia is, of course, desperate to make skipper Luke Donald 's side for September's New York showdown and said: "It would mean the world to me to be there. Obviously if I can help the team, that's my main goal, I've always said it. I think that I can bring things to the team that any team that would probably need. Obviously at the end of the day, he's going to make whatever he thinks is the best decision for him and his team, at the end of the day. So we'll see." Meanwhile, Euro chief Guy Kinnings says Spain is fully deserving of a Ryder Cup return. The chief executive of the European Tour Group, said: 'Today's announcement not only recognises Camiral as one of Europe's leading venues, but also the considerable contribution Spanish golf has made to the proud history of the Ryder Cup. 'The Ryder Cup has grown significantly since Spain last hosted it in 1997. It is one of the world's leading sporting events, which brings significant economic benefits and global exposure to a host region and country, so we could not be happier to be taking it to Costa Brava and Barcelona for the first time, and to Spain for the second time. 'This agreement has taken many months of collaborative discussions, so we are grateful not only to Denis O'Brien and his team at Camiral, but also to the Government of Catalonia, the Spanish Government, the Province of Girona and Barcelona Tourism for their vision and commitment to hosting this major global event. Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler have been the dominant forces in golf in recent years but the golf icons share a healthy mutual respect and admiration off the course Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler may have spent a chunk of the 2025 golf season fiercely competing, but their respect for one another goes far. The pair have enjoyed an impressive year. Scheffler, 29, recently secured his fourth major, and second of 2025, with victory in the 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush. Meanwhile, McIlroy, 36, completed his career Grand Slam in April by claiming the Masters for the first time. Despite their rivalry, the pair share a history of good-natured banter and mutual respect, reports Belfast Live. McIlroy even predicted Scheffler's recent triumph at The Open. From cheeky remarks about prison sentences to quips about Scheffler's wife, and even a meeting between McIlroy and his rival's mum and dad, Mirror Sport takes a closer look at the friendship between Scheffler and McIlroy. "As far as reaching out to Rory, I didn't," Scheffler said in July 2024. "He took the next week off at The Travelers [championship] and it seemed to me like he wanted his space and so just felt like giving us his space was the best thing to do." In August 2022, McIlroy claimed the FedEx Cup for a third time in his career to beat Scheffler to the prize. After departing the 18th, McIlroy bumped into Scheffler's parents, Scott and Diane. With typical class, the Northern Irish superstar told the couple that their son "deserved" the triumph following a campaign that also saw him claim three PGA Tour victories and his maiden major at the Masters. "I'm sorry," McIlroy said. "He deserves it. He's had an unbelievable year." Scheffler's father replied: "So did you. Good playing". Diane also commended McIlroy. Speaking afterwards, Scheffler praised the 2025 champion. "It was brilliant to witness Rory finally get over the line. Certainly from the outside it appeared more like relief than anything else. McIlroy's jail crack Scheffler may be the planet's top golfer, but his reputation took a temporary hit following an incident in which, during one morning in 2024, while trying to reach Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, for the PGA Championship, officers claim he unlawfully drove around a crash scene. He faced charges and had his police mugshot taken before ultimately being freed. Scheffler subsequently described the episode as a "big misunderstanding." Nevertheless, McIlroy completely understood the situation and couldn't help but tease Scheffler about the embarrassing episode. After Xander Schauffele's victory, McIlroy commented on Scheffler's T8 finish: "The fact that the only thing that took him from winning a golf tournament was going into a jail cell for an hour." Scheffler hit back after McIlroy's wife jibe Scheffler had a witty response to McIlroy's comments over a hand injury that kept Scheffler out of action at the turn of the year. The 29-year-old cut himself on a broken wine glass while cooking ravioli on Christmas Day and missed the opening two events of the PGA Tour. McIlroy queried: "Like, why are you cooking yourself? I was hoping it was going to be more of a fun story than that. It's good that he's tearing it up this week, but yeah, get a chef." Never to let McIlroy have the last word, Scheffler later hit back: "I got a chef. Her name is Meredith [Scheffler's wife]. She's pretty cute." ‘Where was the forward planning?': Traffic ‘chaos' raises questions over pause in Derry city roadworks for The Open and not Foyle Cup
The traffic 'chaos' on Monday has led to further questions over a moratorium on roadworks, with one local politician calling for an immediate halt to the works. Images shared online show traffic bumper to bumper on the Foyle Bridge, with one car appearing to get stuck in the central reservation as it attempted to perform a U-turn. Members of the public have reported seeing numerous drivers doing the same manoeuvre to avoid being stuck in traffic for an hour or more. The Foyle Cup, which began in 1992, has grown exponentially to become one of the major annual events in the city, with almost 1,000 teams and some 20,000 players competing. With matches taking place across the length and breadth of the city — accommodating the teams, coaches, families and supporters attending — there is a build-up of traffic in the area. The competition, now in its 33rd year, has previously featured the likes of James McLean, Shay Given, Robbie Keane and John O'Shea as youth players. Teams are welcomed from the Republic, Great Britain, Europe and North America. This year, South African side Sports Academy George are first-time competitors at the tournament. However, it emerged that while roadworks were paused for The Open, which recently took place on the North Coast, no such measures were put in place ahead of the Foyle Cup. Works were taking place in a number of major inner city roads on the first day of the football tournament, including on one of the busiest roads in the city, from Madam's Bank to the Foyle Bridge and Culmore. Further works are scheduled to take place on Queen's Quay, which could compound problems. Tournament organisers themselves also hit out at the situation on social media, saying the traffic in the city was 'chaotic'. 'Roadworks stopped last week in the Derry City Council area because there was a golf tournament happening for four days last week 40 miles away,' they wrote. 'We need MLAs to sort out traffic flow in Derry and in Balkykelly now.' Eamon O'Donnell of North West Taxi Proprietors told BBC Radio Foyle 'it was chaos' for taxi drivers in the city, with the likes of Strathfoyle cut off entirely, as drivers can not afford to be stuck for more than an hour travelling across either the Foyle or Craigavon Bridges. He added: 'Here was an opportunity to showcase the city and to support traffic management. It just created chaos. For the taxi industry, it had a massive impact. 'Basically, we were struggling to cover bookings due to the delays. People were missing hospital appointments, doctor's appointments, people were late for work. 'People started double-booking taxis, thinking the taxis weren't coming, tying up all their taxis. He added: 'There should have been moratorium on roadworks across the city, the same as we have for the Clipper and other things. 'It should have been [the whole] the place, the Queen's Quay — all of that there needs to be put off this week to free the city up.' Asked why roadworks would be paused for The Open and not a local event, he said the organisers of The Open must have been proactive in making that request, prompting him to question why Foyle politicians and other stakeholders in the city did not do the same. SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan has urged the Infrastructure Minister to urgently suspend all planned roadworks in Derry for the remainder of the week. 'It is hard to understand, never mind explain, how there was a moratorium on roadworks for The Open last week, despite the event taking place in Portrush, some 40 miles away. Yet this week, during one of Derry's biggest annual events, traffic is crawling across the city, causing widespread disruption,' he said. 'This gridlock is not just impacting players and families trying to make matches on time, but it's affecting all road users. 'The Foyle Cup is a well-established, annual tournament that brings thousands of visitors into the city. Where was the forward planning to accommodate that? It's simply not good enough.' NI Water said it is laying new wastewater infrastructure on Madam's Bank Road to support new development in the city, with sewer improvements also planned to get underway this week on Queens Quay. The projects were scheduled to take place during the summer months to minimise disruption to school traffic. 'Following the cessation of works last week on Madam's Bank Road to accommodate The Open golf tournament, and the postponement of work on Queens Quay this week to facilitate the Foyle Cup parade, we have taken on board the latest concerns regarding recent traffic disruption and have been liaising with our contractors to determine what measures can be put in place at this stage to alleviate the congestion,' a spokesperson said. 'NI Water can confirm that pipelaying has been stopped on Madam's Bank Road for the remainder of this week. As of early Tuesday, July 22, morning, traffic management on Madam's Bank Road will be reduced to one lane around where the road has already been excavated for the new pipe. Pipelaying work will recommence on Monday, July 28, with the necessary traffic management reinstated.
