Royal Caribbean makes a huge casino and loyalty program change
All Royal Caribbean cruise ships offer a Casino Royale onboard casino. And regardless of the size of the ship, the spaces are generally divided into a smoking side and a non-smoking side.
In reality, however, the entire main casino is a rather smoky environment. It's not uncommon to see someone with a lit cigarette walking through the non-smoking side of the casino, and there's no physical barrier separating the two sides. So, some smoke travels throughout the space.On some of the cruise line's modern (and more recently renovated) ships, there is an entirely separate non-smoking casino. For example, the cruise line replaced the Vintages wine bar on the Royal Promenade aboard Freedom of the Seas with a non-smoking casino space.
Royal Caribbean's extremely popular Oasis class and Icon class mega-ships feature non-smoking casinos. On the Oasis class ships, the nonsmoking casinos are located towards the back of deck four. The casino space was purpose-built on Wonder of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas, the two newest ships in the class, and the same locations (which used to be the Jazz on 4 venue) were renovated into casinos on other ships in the class.According to several social media sources (and one cruise line source) and on-site reports, the non-smoking casino space on the cruise line's newest ship in service, Utopia of the Seas, is getting significantly bigger.
When the renovations are complete, the non-smoking casino will occupy the existing casino space, as well as the spaces currently occupied by the Attic (comedy theater) and Crown Lounge (for Royal's higher-level loyalty members).
As a result of the changes, the Crown Lounge is moving to Deck 16, a move that will likely make Diamond and higher-level members happy, taking some of the space occupied by the teen club.
Attic comedy shows will simply move to the Royal Theater.
As far as the timeline is concerned, the non-smoking casino will temporarily move into The Attic by May 9, and the full, expanded space will be open in the May 30-June 2 timeframe. And to clarify, the Crown Lounge will not close during the renovation at all. The new location will be ready to open by the time the existing space is needed.
The same changes are also reportedly planned for Wonder of the Seas, but are scheduled to take place over the summer, and will be ready before the ship switches from week-long itinerary to 3- and 4-night cruises later this year.
We reached out to Royal Caribbean for comment on the changes but had not received a reply as of this writing.
To be sure, if you've cruised on Wonder of the Seas or (especially) Utopia of the Seas, it's easy to understand why the expansion is a smart move. On a September 2024 sailing of Utopia that I was on, it was difficult to find any open slot machine in the casino on all three evenings of the cruise.
More Royal Caribbean news:It's unclear whether other Oasis-class ships will get the same changes. Utopia and Wonder are the mega-ships scheduled for shorter itineraries where the casino tends to be busier, so it makes sense to start with them.
Many cruisers believe that the larger (main) casino should be the non-smoking space, with a smaller smoking room. Virgin Voyages uses a setup like this, so it wouldn't be completely unprecedented. But Royal Caribbean's management has stated numerous times that every time they test going completely non-smoking in the casino, revenue falls.
With that in mind, a greatly expanded, completely separate non-smoking casino could be the next best thing. A common complaint is that while there non-smoking casino is nice to have, the small size prevents it from having nearly as much of a selection of gaming machines and tables as the main casino, so this could help alleviate the problem.

James Bond actor makes surprise return as iconic villain
Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen is reprising one of his best-known roles in a unique collaboration between the James Bond franchise and the Hitman video game series. The 59-year-old will be voicing Le Chiffre, the character he played in 2006's Casino Royale, in Hitman: World of Assassination where he will be a target for the game's protagonist, the professional hitman Agent 47. The news was announced by video game developers IO Interactive, the company behind Hitman and the new James Bond origins game 007 First Light, at Summer Game Fest 2025. The character will appear as a new 'Elusive Target' in an update for the game and will be available across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 from 6 June until 6 July. 'A recent failed venture left him in dire straits, losing vast sums of both legitimate and illicit capital, and in a desperate bid to recover, he has arranged a high-stakes poker game at the Casino Monarchique in Paris. Agent 47 has been tasked with infiltrating the perilous event and will have to find his way to his target to prevent havoc being wreaked across the world.' Often, when the U.S. State Department makes a significant change to its travel advisory for a country, it brings a stiffer warning for travelers. This time, however, one of the latest advisory updates will help to ease worries for some travelers considering popular Caribbean cruises that visit the destination on a number of cruise lines including Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Celebrity Cruises, and Disney Cruise revised travel advisory also gives the island's tourism industry reason to breathe a collective sigh of relief. The downgraded travel warning level comes not long after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio pledged during a tour of the Caribbean that the U.S. would reevaluate its travel advisory to ensure that it reflected the progress the country has recently made in lowering its high violent crime rate. When he met with Rubio, the country's prime minister explained that the island is safer today than at any time in the last two decades. By collaborating with Rubio, he hoped to soon see his country's travel advisory updated to reflect the current state of affairs and help promote travel to the island. And on May 29, his wish came months after the meeting between Rubio and Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, the State Department has updated its travel advisory for Jamaica, downgrading the warning level from Level 3: Reconsider Travel to Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution. Travelers with upcoming plans to visit Jamaica on a Caribbean cruise or another summer trip should keep in mind that although the advisory has been downgraded, it still recommends that travelers remain extra cautious in Jamaica due to high levels of violent crime. 'While violent crime in Jamaica has decreased since 2024, it remains statistically high throughout the country,' the advisory emphasizes. 'Tourist areas generally see lower rates of violent crime than other parts of the country. The homicide rate reported by the Government of Jamaica is among the highest in the Western Hemisphere. Armed robberies and sexual assaults are common.' The advisory also cautions that the U.S. Embassy receives regular reports of sexual assaults, including from U.S. travelers staying at Jamaican resorts.'U.S. citizens report slow or unsatisfactory response to serious criminal incidents,' the advisory adds. The State Department also wants travelers to be aware that medical services are limited in Jamaica. 'U.S. citizens should not expect the same level of health care available in Jamaica as is available in the United States,' the advisory states. 'This includes slower emergency service response times and less availability of care for illness or injury.' Additionally, the State Department recommends that U.S. citizens purchase travel insurance for Jamaica trips. 'Check with your travel insurance provider about evacuation assistance, medical insurance, and trip cancellation coverage,' the advisory ports in Jamaica include Falmouth, which is visited by cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and Disney Cruise Line, as well as Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, visited by Carnival Cruise Line. Jamaica cruise ports are generally considered safe for tourists, but risks do exist. Cruise passengers visiting Jamaica should make sure to follow the State Department's guidance on ways to stay safe, which include: Avoid public buses. Avoid remote places. Do not physically resist any robbery attempt. Be aware of your surroundings and keep a low profile. Cruise passengers also need to be very careful not to accidentally bring firearms or ammunition, including stray rounds, shells, or empty casings, into Jamaican ports.'The penalties for carrying firearms or ammunition, even by mistake, are severe, and can include long prison sentences,' the State Department warns. For additional safety guidance for cruise ports in Jamaica, make sure to review any port-specific safety information provided by your cruise line and listen for any announcements from your ship's captain. You can also reduce your chances of becoming a target for criminals by booking shore excursions directly through your cruise line.
