Brazil sack Dorival Junior after World Cup qualifying defeat to Argentina
Dorival Junior has been sacked as Brazil's head coach after 14 months in charge.
The 62-year-old's departure comes three days after Brazil were defeated 4-1 by rivals Argentina in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, a result which captain Marquinhos labelled 'embarrassing'.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said on Friday: 'The board thanks Dorival and wishes him success in his continued career. From now on, the CBF will work to find a replacement.'

With just four matches left to play in their qualification group, Brazil sit fourth out of 10 South American teams. The top six automatically seal entry to next year's World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Brazil are six points clear of Venezuela, who occupy the intercontinental play-off spot in seventh position.
Dorival led his side to four wins in eight matches during their World Cup qualifying campaign. His only major tournament in charge saw Brazil exit the Copa America in 2024 with a quarter-final defeat by Uruguay.
Carlo Ancelotti has been the subject of renewed interest by Selecao to assume the now-vacant role of head coach for the 2026 World Cup. Ancelotti, a five-time Champions League winner, was also approached in 2022 and 2023 about the role.
Dorival was appointed in January 2024, departing Sao Paolo after leading the club to an 11th-placed finish in the 2023 Brazilian Serie A campaign. He led Sao Paolo to Copa do Brasil victory in 2023, ending their 11-year wait for a major trophy. He also won the Copa Libertadores with Flamengo in 2022.
Before Dorival, Fernando Diniz and Ramon Menezes took interim charge of the national team as they sought a permanent replacement for Tite, who stepped down following Brazil's quarter-final exit to Croatia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Brazil were in a bind at the start of 2024. They had appointed the inexperienced Ramon Menezes interim coach in the wake of the 2022 World Cup, then pivoted to another temporary solution in Diniz, all the while making plans for Ancelotti to arrive and kickstart a new era before last summer's Copa America. The Italian didn't come; Diniz's idiosyncratic brand of football didn't take hold. With no standout options to replace him, the federation went for a safe pair of hands.

Dorival, who had built up a reputation as a firefighter over his previous 22 years as a coach, ticked that box. He had also won the Copa Libertadores with Flamengo in 2022 — a significant success. When the Selecao beat England in his first match in charge, snatching a late goal after a organised display, there was a degree of cautious optimism in the Brazilian press.
He never made good on that promise. Brazil stuttered in subsequent friendlies, were deeply unimpressive at the Copa America and have only shown fleeting signs of improvement since. The prevailing impression — reinforced by the disastrous display against Argentina this week — was of a team adrift, occasionally bailed out by individual brilliance but fundamentally nowhere near the level required.
Brazil's problems run far deeper than the head coach. The question, for now, is whether sacking Dorival will lead to a short-term bounce. Brazil would certainly benefit from a more coherent tactical plan, a greater sense of purpose, even a bit of extra personality. Ancelotti would again seem to be the prime candidate. Time, however, is short: the World Cup is only 15 months away.

Malik Tillman finally has his moment with the U.S. men's team: 'He's a baller'
SAN JOSE, Calif. — The surprise on Chris Richards' face said it all. Told following the U.S. men's national team's resounding 5-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday that three-year veteran Malik Tillman had scored his first two goals for the USMNT, Richards couldn't believe it. "I had no idea," said the U.S. center back. "Malik, to be fair, he doesn't speak that much, so I wouldn't have known that. But that's crazy." Tillman earned the first of his 20 International caps in 2022. One of the final cuts from the USMNT's 2022 World Cup roster, the German-born Bayern Munich product is coming off a career season with PSV Eindhoven, which he helped win the last two Dutch titles and advance to the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League in consecutive seasons. Despite missing a chunk of the 2024-25 campaign because of injury, he still managed to score 16 goals in 34 appearances for PSV last term. Still, he'd never found the net at international level until Sunday. With most of the Americans' top stars — Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Antonee "Jedi" Robinson and Tim Weah among them — missing for various reasons this summer, this Gold Cup and the two tuneups before it represent an opportunity for others to make their mark. Tillman, who manned an attacking midfield role for coach Mauricio Pochettino against the Soca Warriors, has made the most of his opportunity so far. He was the best U.S. player in last weekend's 2-1 loss to Türkiye. On Sunday, he was even better — with the goals to show for it. The 23-year-old opened the scoring for the hosts 16 minutes in, then doubled his team's lead before halftime. "I've been waiting for this moment for a long time," Tillman, his voice barely above a whisper as always, said after earning Man of the Match honors. "A lot of people have been waiting as well." Given his pedigree, Tillman's quality has never been in doubt. But until Sunday, he had struggled to duplicate his form for PSV with the national team — in part because his path to logging regular minutes was blocked. Now, with fellow attackers like Pulisic, Weah and Gio Reyna absent, he has his first real chance to occupy a significant role at the international level. The payoff has been a long time coming, both for Tillman and the USMNT "I understand him better now," said Pochettino, who replaced former coach Gregg Berhalter last September. "October, November, when we met for the first time, I think it was difficult to create this relationship that the player needs, and the coach needs, to trust each other," Pochettino said. "That is about time. Now, after a few weeks together, I really start to understand him, and he starts to understand us. "He's a fantastic kid," the former Chelsea, Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain manager continued. "He's a talented player, one of the most talented players I think that we have in the USA." Tillman wasn't the only player to stand out against T&T. Diego Luna assisted on Tillman's second goal, then set up the Americans' third when his low shot hit striker Patrick Agyemang and then the back of the net. Luca de la Torre, who made the U.S. roster for the last World Cup but didn't play in Qatar, bossed the midfield alongside newcomer Sebastian Berhalter. With two late helpers, fullback Max Arfsten rebounded from a poor performance in last week's 4-0 loss to Switzerland. Haji Wright, another 2022 vet, scored the Americans' fifth on Sunday in clinical fashion. The victory simultaneously snapped a four-match losing skid and set the U.S. up well for its final two group games, against guest team Saudi Arabia and Haiti. (The Saudis beat the Haitians 1-0 in Sunday's nightcap. "That is only one victory," Pochettino said. "Now we need to see the next one." With the 2026 World Cup on home soil now less than a year away, the opportunity ins't lost on his players. "It's the last tournament that we have before the World Cup," Tillman said. "So it's very important for us to show ourselves, to show that we are still there, that we're still a good team, even though some players are not here." Nobody boosted their stock on Sunday as much as Tillman, who is finally beginning to show U.S. fans and players alike his personality, both on and off the field. "From the outside, he's very quiet. But then once you get to know him he's a teddy bear," said Richards of Tillman, who he's known since both were playing in Bayern's reserve squad six years ago. "When I first met him he didn't speak any English, and now he's playing for the national team," Richards added. "It's really amazing to not just see him develop as a player, but as a person. And he fully deserved two goals today. "He's a baller." Rowers back among the medals after Paris Olympics flop
Back on the water after their worst Olympic performance in 36 years, the Australian rowing team has claimed five medals at the World Cup in Varese, Italy. Triple Olympian Alex Hill, winner of a Tokyo gold and Rio silver medal in the men's four, led a new-look crew to victory as his squad sought to rebound after a lean Paris yield. Advertisement Australian rowers left France with just one bronze, won by women's pair Annabelle McIntyre and Jess Morrison, which prompted a searching review of the high performance program. The 2024 result brought to an end a stunning run by Australian crews which had yielded seven medals, including three gold from the quartet dubbed the "Oarsome Foursome". Hill was joined in Italy by two new faces in the boat in Nikolas Pender and Austin Reinehr as well as Fergus Hamilton, who was part of the crew that finished last in the Paris final. The Australians executed a measured and clinical race to take the gold medal, surging ahead of both Dutch crews in the closing stages. Advertisement Veteran Paralympian Erik Horrie also claimed gold, dominating the PR1 men's single sculls final to clinch his first World Cup win since 2022. After winning Tokyo gold, a reworked women's four failed to make the final in Paris. A new selection picked up silver in Varese in Jaime Ford, Eliza Gaffney, Georgina Rowe and Jacqueline Swick. Lisa Greissl and Sam Stunell, racing together internationally for the first time, also won silver in the PR3 mixed double sculls. The women's eight added bronze after battling through a highly competitive final, finishing just behind Great Britain and the United States. Advertisement Rowing Australia Performance Director Paul Thompson praised the team's execution and composure, with 17 rowers making their senior debut, signalling a generational change. "It's not just about the results - what's pleasing is how these crews are going about it," Thompson said. "Erik (Horrie) and the men's four were outstanding and we've got some new rowers on the podium, which is great to see."

The first opponents at the CWC: Fluminense in portrait
General information Name: Fluminense Football Club Location: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Stadium: Maracanã League: Campeonato Brasileiro A Founded: 1902 Nicknames: Tricolor, Nense, Fluzão Manager: Renato Gaúcho Qualification for the Club World Cup: Winner of the 2023 Copa Libertadores Honours (selection) 1 Copa Libertadores 1 Copa Sudamericana 4 Brazilian titles 1 Brazilian Cup 22 Rio de Janeiro state championships Player in focus On the evening of 7 June 2024, 55,000 people gathered at the legendary Maracanã Stadium. The return of the prodigal son and world-class defender Thiago Silva was celebrated with a spectacular light show and fireworks. Never before had so many fans come to a stadium in Brazil for the presentation of a footballer. The then 39-year-old centre-back was back at his boyhood club after more than 15 years in Europe. The celebrations were fitting. The presence of tens of thousands of fans at Thiago Silva's presentation was a testament not only to his star power, but also to that of his club. Advertisement Alongside former world star Thiago Silva, there is a familiar face from the Bundesliga in the Fluminense squad: Renato Augusto. The central midfielder is now 37 years old and returned to his hometown of Rio just over a year ago. However, his footballing upbringing was at city rivals Flamengo, where he played in the youth team and took his first steps in professional football. In the summer of 2008, at the age of 20, he made the move to Europe and signed for Bayer Leverkusen. He made his Bundesliga debut – how could it be otherwise – against BVB. More than a decade after Renato Augusto's last encounter with Borussia, the two are now set to meet again. About the club The Rio de Janeiro club, the oldest in the metropolis and winner of the 2023 Copa Libertadores, find themselves in the middle of the Brazilian domestic season at the time of the Club World Cup – the league matches that were scheduled during the FIFA tournament have been postponed. Fluminense are not the only historic club in Rio de Janeiro. Botafogo, Flamengo and Vasco da Gama are three other heavyweights from the metropolis playing in the Brazilian first division. City rivals Botafogo and Flamengo are also competing in the Club World Cup. Like Fluminense, they qualified for the tournament thanks to their victories in the Copa Libertadores – the South American equivalent of the UEFA Champions League. Although Fluminense recently celebrated a major success in 2023 with their first ever Copa Libertadores title, the club are no longer among the top teams in the domestic league, having not won a league title since 2012 and only finishing in the top three once in the past ten years. In their only previous appearance in the Club World Cup, in 2023, Fluminense reached the final, ultimately losing 4-0 to Manchester City.
