Hyundai Motor's exports from US plant plunge amid tariff woes
Seoul: Hyundai Motor's vehicle exports from its US plant plunged last month, industry data showed on Sunday, as the company accelerates production realignment strategies to cope with rising tariff tensions.
Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA), a U.S. production unit of the South Korean automaker, exported just 14 vehicles in June, a sharp decline from 1,303 units in the same month last year and 2,386 in May, according to the data, reports Yonhap news agency.
It marked the first time HMMA's monthly exports fell below 100 units since April 2020, during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
HMMA exported a total of 22,600 vehicles last year.
Industry insiders attributed the sharp decline to Hyundai's production realignment strategy aimed at mitigating the impact of Washington's tariff policies, which impose a 25 percent duty on all imported vehicles.
Hyundai Motor, which exported 637,000 vehicles to the United States last year, is reportedly considering redirecting U.S.-produced vehicles to the domestic market instead of exporting them overseas.
To reduce tariff exposure, the company has earlier announced plans to boost U.S. production capacity by expanding output at its Alabama and Georgia plants to meet local demand. At the same time, it will scale back production of U.S.-bound models at Kia Corp.'s plant in Mexico.
"In order to minimise the impact of U.S. tariffs, we have implemented measures to shift Tucson production from Mexico to HMMA and moved HMMA's Canadian-bound production to Mexico," a Hyundai official said during an earnings call in April.
In line with that shift, Hyundai shipped around 2,100 units of the Tucson crossover from Mexico in February, but that number dropped to 522 in March and has remained at zero since April.
Meanwhile, South Korea's automobile exports declined slightly in April from a year earlier, largely due to a sharp drop in shipments to the United States following Washington's imposition of steep tariffs on foreign-made cars, government data showed.
The value of outbound shipments of automobiles came to US$6.53 billion last month, down 3.8 percent from a year earlier, according to data from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
By region, exports to North America tumbled 17.8 percent on-year to $3.36 billion, with shipments to the U.S. plunging 19.6 percent to $2.89 billion.

Are Bengaluru rents cooling off? Netizens report a dip in top housing complexes
After two years of sharp rental hikes in Bengaluru's prime residential complexes, tenants are finally seeing a shift, and this time, it's in their favour. After two years of sharp rental hikes in Bengaluru's prime residential complexes, tenants are finally seeing a shift, and this time, it's in their favour. (Representational Image)(Pexels) Users on platforms like Reddit and Facebook housing groups report a visible dip in rents across Tier-I societies, with some managing to negotiate rates 10–15% lower than those originally listed. While many landlords still prefer renting to families, the steep rents are increasingly out of reach for them. On the other hand, bachelors, who are typically more open to sharing rental costs, often face barriers due to housing society rules or owner preferences. This mismatch is now prompting some landlords to revise their expectations. The sudden influx of newly available rental stock, driven by the post-COVID construction backlog reaching completion, has contributed to the rent correction. At the same time, sluggish annual salary hikes, job market uncertainty, and a slowdown in fresh hiring are pushing tenants to seek more affordable options, including low-rise builder-floor homes in less expensive localities. According to one Reddit user actively tracking prices for the past six months, several premium gated communities have seen rent corrections, particularly in 2BHK and 3BHK units. 'Online rents are aspirational numbers,' the user wrote. 'Actual deals are closing much lower. Owners are struggling to find tenants willing to pay steep prices.' Also Read: Planning to rent in Bengaluru? Netizens warn of hidden costs and water issues; even suggest checking with society guards Families can't afford it, and singles are not preferred Several tenants point out that many landlords continue to prefer renting to families, but the high rents are increasingly unaffordable for them. Meanwhile, bachelors, who are more willing to share costs, often face resistance due to housing society restrictions or owner preferences. 'With fewer family tenants willing to pay sky-high rents, landlords are being forced to revise expectations,' said another user, citing personal experience negotiating a rent renewal. 'My landlord had increased rent by 15–20% every year, but this year, he finally agreed to a no-hike renewal.' What's driving rents to cool down? Netizens attribute this trend to a sudden influx of completed housing inventory. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a construction slowdown, with many projects delayed between 2020 and 2023. But in 2024 and 2025, thousands of long-pending apartments began hitting the market, creating a supply surge in key micro-markets. 'The post-COVID backlog started completing all at once, adding a lot of new homes for rent,' a Redditor explained. 'The market just couldn't sustain premium pricing in every society.' Coupled with low annual salary hikes, job market uncertainty, and a slowdown in new job offers, many tenants are opting for budget-conscious choices. 'People are holding back. They're afraid of layoffs and are saving for a dry day,' said another user. Most of them are scouting for rental options in low-rise builder floors to save costs. Also Read: Bengaluru tenants turn to property investment to escape rental exploitation by landlords Migration reversal and affordability crisis A growing number of tech workers are also choosing to relocate to more affordable cities like Pune and Hyderabad. 'My colleagues have changed their base location,' said a Redditor. 'In Bengaluru, if you live far, you lose three hours a day in traffic. If you live close, you pay a fortune in rent. It's becoming unsustainable, especially for freshers.' Real estate brokers say rents are stabilising In 2023, rental prices in popular Bengaluru neighbourhoods such as Koramangala, Sarjapur Road, Whitefield, and Bellandur witnessed sharp spikes, some reaching as high as 30-35% annually, as landlords aimed to make up for revenue lost during the pandemic. The demand surge that followed the return-to-office mandates only intensified the upward trend. However, the momentum now appears to be easing. 'Rental rates in pockets like Whitefield, Koramangala, and HSR Layout have softened by around 3-5%,' said Manjesh S Rao, chief real estate officer at BrokerInBlue. Real estate brokers say that 2 BHK apartments in areas like BTM Layout and Sarjapur, which were previously fetching ₹ 35,000-40,000 per month, are now leasing for around ₹ 30,000. In parts of the Whitefield periphery, such as Bagalur, similarly sized homes are available for under ₹ 27,000-30,000 per month, reflecting the broader stabilisation in Bengaluru's rental market.

Recover ₹65.9 cr from accounts of convicts: High Court to Canada
New Delhi The Delhi high court has allowed the Canadian government to recover ₹ 65.9 crore from Indian bank accounts of Indian origin Ontario bureaucrat Sanjay Madan and his associate Vidhan Madan, in connection with a ₹ 290 crore fraud case being pursued before Canadian courts, and directed IndusInd and RBL bank to remit the amount. A bench of justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora passed its June 23 order, after Sanjay, who appeared virtually, did not object to the transfer (Getty Images/iStockphoto) In April 2023, Sanjay Madan was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment, after he pleaded guilty to stealing $47.4 million Canadian dollars from the Ontario government. The government had accused Madan of exploiting his senior position within the Ontario ministry of education and stealing nearly $11 million by manipulating Ontario's Support for Families Program (SFFP) implemented during Covid-19. Sanjay was also accused of rigging the selection process for IT Consultants as a Director of the i-Access Branch with his associate Vidhan, and receiving more than $36 million through kickbacks from 2011 to 2020. A bench of justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora passed its June 23 order, after Sanjay, who appeared virtually, did not object to the transfer and asserted that the funds lying in account held by the two in IndusInd and RBL bank, were sufficient to pay the settlement amount of ₹ 65.9 crore. He, however, said that the accounts were lying dormant and undertook to execute all the necessary documents for re-enabling their operation and repatriation of the amount to the government. As a part of the plea agreement, Madan had agreed to repay the 30 million upfront and pay the remaining over 15 years. The court had also restrained Madan and his associate Vidhan Madan from dissipating their assets including those located outside Canada. Vidhan was accused of transferring ill gotten gains received from the two fraudulent schemes from Canada to India. Considering the submissions the court thus directed Madan to cooperate with the banks for reenabling their operation within two weeks and thereafter remit the amount to the Canadian government's bank account. 'In view of the submissions of counsel for the Defendant No. 1 and the Defendant No.1 himself who appeared through Video Conferencing Link, the Defendant No.5/IndusInd and Defendant No.10/RBL are directed to co- operate with the Defendant No.1 in getting the KYC compliance done within two (2) weeks qua the bank accounts held in the name of Defendant No.1 in their respective banks. After the above said KYC compliance is done, Defendant No. 5 and Defendant No. 10 are further directed to remit an amount to the tune of Rs. 65.9 Crores in the bank account of the Crown/Plaintiff in accordance with applicable law/rules,' the court said in its order. The court issued the directions while considering an application filed by the Canadian government seeking to restrain the duo from operating or transacting the funds held in their Indian bank accounts. The application was filed in the suit seeking recovery of funds allegedly diverted to India as a part of the fraud. The suit stated that Madan had admitted before the Canadian court that he had diverted certain funds out of the proceeds of crime to India and used them to also buy properties in India. In its 12-page order, the judge further barred Sanjay and Vidhan from operating their Indian account pending further orders, with limited exceptions including remittance of ₹ 65.9 crores and payment of legal fees to the counsel, backed by a valid documentation. 'In view of the statement of Defendant No. 1 and the e-mail response of Defendant No. 2, Defendant Nos. 1 and 2 are restrained from transacting from their Indian Bank accounts until the final disposal of this application,' the court said in its order. The court also issued summons in the suit and fixed September 2 as the next date of hearing.

Decathlon Canada to close most Ontario locations, including five GTA stores, by summer 2025
Decathlon Canada confirms GTA store closures amid Ontario exit strategy Decathlon Canada has announced the closure of most of its Ontario stores, including five locations across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), as part of a broader operational shift. The French sporting goods retailer confirmed via its website that stores in Brampton, Burlington, Markham, Scarborough, and Vaughan will cease operations by the end of summer 2025. The announcement marks a significant retail exit for Decathlon Canada, which entered the Ontario market with plans for long-term expansion. The company did not specify a precise timeline for each store's final day of operations but confirmed the closures are scheduled to occur over the course of the summer. Also read: Canadian comeback: new owner Tim Gu aims to revive MEC with homegrown manufacturing push Decathlon Canada has not released details about the number of employees affected or whether there will be opportunities for internal transfers to remaining locations. The company has also not indicated whether other provinces will see similar closures or if the brand intends to concentrate its operations elsewhere in Canada. Live Events According to the company's statement: 'Decathlon Canada continues to assess its operations to ensure alignment with long-term goals and customer demand. We are committed to keeping customers informed as plans evolve.' All five impacted stores are located in high-traffic retail centers within the GTA. Decathlon's exit from these locations reflects broader challenges faced by international retailers in adapting to competitive regional markets. The sporting goods chain, known for offering a wide range of equipment and apparel at value pricing, first opened in Canada in 2018. Since then, it has expanded to several provinces but has reportedly faced pressures related to retail overhead, local competition, and consumer shopping trends. Customers holding gift cards or planning returns are encouraged to check the company's website for up-to-date policies and store-specific details. Online shopping options remain available through the retailer's Canadian e-commerce platform. Future operational plans, including possible new formats or regional adjustments, have not yet been announced. Decathlon Canada indicated further updates will be provided as the closure process continues.
