Russia's Roscosmos, NASA to hold first in-person talks at heads level since 2018, Russia says

Indian Express28-07-2025
The head of Russian space agency Roscosmos, Dmitry Bakanov, has arrived in Houston for talks with the interim head of NASA, Sean Duffy – the first in-person meeting at the agencies' heads level since 2018, Russian news agencies reported on Tuesday.
Talks between Bakanov, the head of Roscosmos since February, and US Transportation Secretary Duffy, whom President Donald Trump named as NASA's interim head earlier this month, are scheduled for July 31, Russia's TASS state news agency reported.
'The parties plan to discuss ongoing joint projects,' TASS reported, citing a Roscosmos statement.
The space program is one of the few international projects on which the United States and Russia still cooperate closely. Relations in other areas between the two countries have broken down since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
'We plan to discuss the continuation of the cross-flight program, the extension of the International Space Station's operational life, and the work of the Russia-U.S. joint task force on the future safe deorbiting and controlled ocean disposal of the ISS,' TASS cited Bakanov as saying in the Roscosmos statement.
Bakanov met with NASA Associate Administrator for Space Operations Ken Bowersox in April at the Russian-operated Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, according to TASS.
But the last meeting between the heads of Roscosmos and NASA took place in October 2018, when Dmitry Rogozin, then director general of Roscosmos, met NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine in person also at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, according to Russian media.
Bakanov, together with NASA officials, will visit divisions of the Johnson Space Center and Boeing's production facility for talks with the company's space program leadership, RIA agency reported.
On the eve of the launch of NASA's SpaceX Crew-11 flight, scheduled for July 31, Bakanov will meet with the crew of the Crew Dragon spacecraft, which includes Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Platonov, RIA reported.
In the early days after Trump's return to office in January, Russia and the U.S. moved closer to restore relations, but the U.S. president has since grown impatient with Moscow, giving Russia on Monday 10-12 days to make progress toward ending the war in Ukraine.

Trump takes jab at Biden, says his administration prevented Russia-Ukraine war from becoming a WWIII

Washington, Aug 9 (UNI) Taking a jab at his predecessor Joe Biden, US President Donald Trump said that the Russia-Ukraine war could have escalated into a third world war, were it for his administration. He further argued that global tensions peaked when relations between Moscow and Washington hit their lowest point during the Biden administration, reports RT. Since his return to office, Trump has resumed diplomatic ties with Moscow which had been virtually suspended in 2022 during the Biden administration, and has indeed made calls with both Putin and Zelensky to come to a settlement. However, while he shares good ties with the Russian President, his efforts have not yielded much success while his policies have been a lot more anti-Kremlin, weaponising trade in an attempt to get Moscow to stop its attack on Kyiv, targeting both Moscow as well as Russia affiliated nations. Speaking to journalists at the White House on Friday, Trump claimed that, if not for his administration's actions, the Ukraine conflict 'would have ended up being a world war." 'We've brought it down a long way, but when I first came in, I thought, 'Wow, this thing is really bad,'' Trump added. 'Now the only question is: when is it going to be settled? And it could be very soon,' he said. The president again termed the ongoing war 'Biden's war' and criticised what he described as the previous administration's vast military support for Kyiv. 'Through Biden and his people, we're probably in for $350 billion,' he said. Trump has claimed that he aims to recover this sum through a rare earth minerals deal with Ukraine, which he states could refill the US coffers. However, many analysts have called the move a folly, as majority of the minerals lie in areas such as Donetsk and Luhansk – both of which have become a part of Russia. While Washington has echoed Moscow's position on the conflict – terming it as a proxy war against Russia – the Trump administration has continued with its weapons exports to Ukraine, supplying the country with both Patriot missile batteries, as well as Multiple Launch Rocket Systems, artillery systems, and anti-tank munitions. Kremlin officials have stated that securing a peaceful resolution will be the central focus of the bilateral meeting between Trump and Putin. UNI XC ANV GNK

‘His only card': Zelensky says Vladimir Putin ‘trying to sell' Russia-Ukraine ceasefire for a 'price'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday blasted Russian President Vladimir Putin for trying to 'legalise the occupation' of Kyiv's territories as the attempts to reach a peace deal gather pace. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky blasted his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, saying that he wants territorial gains and the legalisation of occupation. (AFP) Zelensky said that the end of the war depends on Russia, and it must end the war it started. 'First and foremost, there must be a just end to the war, and it depends on Russia. It is Russia that must end the war it started,' he said in his address to the Ukrainian people. Zelensky said that Ukraine and its allies have the same understanding of the need for a ceasefire and for the end of the killings. 'Only one actor stands against this, Putin. His only card is the ability to kill, and he is trying to sell the cessation of killings at the highest possible price,' the leader of Ukraine added. Volodymyr Zelensky said that the requirement wasn't a pause, but a real, lasting peace. He called for an immediate ceasefire and said that US President Donald Trump also told him the same thing. 'I have not heard any partners express doubts about America's ability to ensure that the war ends. The President of the United States has the levers and the determination. Ukraine has supported all of President Trump's proposals, starting back in February. Ceasefire, all formats have been supported,' he added. The Ukrainian President blasted his Russian counterpart, saying that he wants territorial gains and the legalisation of occupation. He said that his country won't allow for its second partition, after losing Crimea.

Amid tariff fury, India backs Trump-Putin's planned talks in Alaska

NEW DELHI: Faced with US president Trump's fury over energy imports from Russia, India welcomed the announcement about his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Aug 15, saying it stood ready to back these efforts to end the conflict. Recalling PM Narendra Modi's message to Putin earlier that "this is not an era of war", MEA said in a statement that the meeting holds the promise of bringing to an end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and opening up the prospects for peace. While the Trump-Putin meeting suggests fresh momentum in US President's efforts to broker peace, whether he can get Ukraine to surrender any territory remains debatable. Trump has said that "there will be some swapping of territories, to the betterment of both". Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was quick to reject any ceding of land by his country. For India though, in the present circumstances, the three sides agreeing to a peace deal is the best thing that could happen as it would also turn Trump's secondary sanctions against India groundless. Indian ambassador to the US, Vinay Kwatra, met Senator Lindsey Graham, a lead votary of sanctions against countries doing business with Moscow, and explained to him the Indian perspective on energy security, including increasing energy trade with the US. "India welcomes the understanding reached between the US and the Russian Federation for a meeting in Alaska on 15th Aug 2025," said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, adding that India endorses the upcoming summit meeting and stands ready to support these efforts. Modi had spoken to Putin Friday about deepening ties with Russia and underlined India's "unwavering" support for resolving the conflict through diplomatic and political means.
