Volvo smart seatbelt adjusts itself based on your weight and position for increased safety
Volvo plans to introduce what it calls its 'multi-adaptive safety belt' next year, which will debut in its all-electric 2026 EX60 SUV.
Volvo didn't yet confirm its plans for its futuristic seatbelt beyond the EX60 at the tech's debut at Volvo's Safety Centre in Gothenburg, although officials were very clear that throughout its history, new safety features were quickly spread throughout its lineup.
Frise, a University of Windsor professor of mechanical engineering, who specializes in automotive safety research, says that the company has always had an impressive safety focus, being key in side and curtain airbag development as well.
So how exactly does Volvo's new high-tech smart seatbelt work? It starts by pulling in data from sensors inside and outside the vehicle, including ones that measure passenger weight, size and position on the seat. These inputs are run through a computer, and combined with camera, steering wheel and pedal data. The information comes together to provide a detailed analysis of what the driver is seeing and responding to, and compares it with the potential dangers it sees approaching.
Once a collision occurs, modern seatbelts use what's called 'load limiters' to cap the amount of force the belts put on the body, which, after their initial tightening, then release slightly on each torso to help prevent injuries. Volvo's current seatbelts offer two or three possible 'profiles' or degrees of load-limiting, based on the basic parameters it can currently read and adapt to in a split second.
The upcoming smart belt will raise that to 11 different load-limiting profiles, taking more interior and exterior data into account, and fine-tuning its response to account for different physical characteristics. So a larger and heavier occupant will receive a higher belt-load setting in a serious crash to increase head protection, while a lower speed crash with a smaller person can reduce that belt load setting to minimize the risk to the passenger's ribs.
'We see data as the new safety belt,' said Aders Bell, Volvo's chief engineering and technology officer. 'We've gone from a place where we were in a data desert, to now we're in a data Niagara Falls.'
The adaptive belt provides more tailored protection to the seat occupant, with a wider scale of load-limiting variations — and these can be expanded later or fine-tuned via over-the-air updates.
This will make Volvo's upcoming vehicles, which are capable of more computations and more comprehensive over-the-air updates, even safer, whether through updates to the adaptive belts or with tweaked active crash-prevention features, said Bell.
'This is how we level up on saving lives.'
Volvo arranged a demonstration crash test at the Safety Centre here. It was one of roughly 150 to 200 crashes planned at the facility each year. Digitally, of course, there are many more, with Volvo staff estimating that the latest EX90 was crashed more than 80,000 times virtually.
The two-part crash test demonstrated an EX90 SUV that used its active safety system to brake in time to just kiss (perhaps unexpectedly) the orange nose of another one pointed in the opposite direction. After that, the target car was violently T-boned in the side by a third EX90 at 55 km/h, sending it leaping into the air, and roughly two lanes over.
But the most harrowing part of the tour of Volvo's safety facility was one I couldn't photograph. It's where the company keeps some Volvos involved in severe crashes. The carmaker reports all the drivers survived, and provided the company details of the crashes, all in Sweden, so that the carmaker could study the vehicles and their safety.
The safety systems have been reducing injury rates for decades. The percentage of Volvo owners injured in crashes is down from 10 per cent in the 1970s to just over two per cent between 2010 and 2019. The injury risk for men and women is now evening out. It used to be much higher for women, but an expanding family of crash test dummies and more diverse research has helped change the technologies leading to the improvement, said Åsa Hagland, head of Volvo's Safety Centre.
It's too early to tell if Volvo's adaptive seatbelt, set to arrive in 2026, will become a safety system that is mandated within a decade as the original safety belt was.
'There's no way that other companies are not looking at this,' said Frise. 'So it's very likely that these will start in higher-end vehicles and then gravitate to lower models, and then someone in the regulatory framework will say 'Hey, this is a really good thing,' and make it mandatory.'

How I'd Invest $10,000 Across 3 Canadian Tech Stocks for Profit Potential
Written by Puja Tayal at The Motley Fool Canada In the artificial intelligence (AI) race, while the world is chasing hardware stocks for their exponential cyclical profits, a few software stocks are a good investment for steady profit and free cash flow (FCF) growth. You could diversify your investments across different tech stocks, a few U.S.-based AI stocks like Advanced Micro Devices and Broadcom, and a few Canadian tech stocks. Three Canadian tech stocks to buy for profit potential Canada has some software stocks with a robust balance sheet. They have reached a stage where profits grow at a stable rate. (TSXV:TOI) is a spin-off of Constellation Software, focused on European software companies. It is not directly involved in software services but is a holding company of several mission-critical software companies that operate in niche verticals. It uses the power of compounding to grow its cash flow. Targeting companies that have stable cash flow and using this cash to acquire more such companies at a decent valuation helps it get the desired return on investment. share price surges as new acquisitions increase the enterprise value. The stock has surged 51% year to date. It picked up momentum in September 2022 as it grew its free cash flow (FCF) in the range of 12-42% in the last three years. Although the stock is trading at its all-time high, it is a stock to buy and hold for the long term to enjoy the effect of compounding. Shopify stock Shopify (TSX:SHOP) started as an e-commerce company but later expanded to offline retail. It expanded from catering to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to large enterprises and from North America to International markets. This expansion has helped Shopify normalize seasonality and report a 27% revenue growth even in its seasonally weak first quarter. This is its eighth consecutive quarter of more than 25% pro forma revenue growth. Moreover, the company increased its FCF margin to 15% in the first quarter of 2025 from 12% a year ago. The consistency in revenue and FCF growth makes Shopify a stock to buy ahead of the seasonal rally. Although the stock has surged 58% since April 2025, there is more than 50% upside potential for the holiday season that runs from November to February. Descartes Systems Unlike the above two tech stocks, Descartes Systems (TSX:DSG) stock is trading at a 15% discount from its February peak. The supply chain solutions provider generally sees a rally ahead of the holiday season as logistics demand increases from retailers and e-commerce companies. However, the seasonal rally is delayed because of tariff uncertainty around the August 1st deadline. U.S. president Donald Trump is negotiating tariff deals with key trade partners. Companies and individuals have stalled their purchases and investments until they get a clear view of the tariff situation. Once there is clarity, it could see a surge as companies execute their pending trade. Descartes is witnessing the repeat of the 2018 U.S.-China trade war situation. Throughout 2018, Descartes stock reported tepid growth amidst trade war uncertainty. The stock later jumped 43% in the first five months of 2019, as the dust settled on trade war uncertainty. The company has increased its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) margin to 44% in 2024 from 38% in 2019, driven by e-commerce volumes. It has even cut costs to maintain this margin amidst tariff uncertainty. A good strategy is to buy the dip and hold for the recovery rally. You can keep accumulating this stock on every dip to benefit from its resilient growth. How to invest $10,000 in the above tech stocks You can consider investing $3,000 each in and Descartes Systems for the long term. You can keep $2,000 invested in Shopify for the long term and use the remaining $2,000 for active investing in Shopify: buy the March and April dip, sell the February rally, and benefit from the seasonality. While tech stocks are good for growth, consider diversifying your portfolio in other stocks to balance risk. Donald Trump's key sector tariffs look firm, Mark Carney says, as trade talks could go past Friday's deadline
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney suggested Wednesday that U.S. tariffs on key sectors like autos, steel and aluminum will likely remain, since Donald Trump's White House views them as necessary for the national security of the United States. Two days before Trump's latest deadline to increase tariffs on Canadian goods , Carney told reporters on Parliament Hill that it is possible trade talks between his government and the U.S. administration will drag on past Friday. While Carney called the talks 'constructive' and 'complex,' he said there are certain sectors Trump views as 'strategic' for national security reasons. He named automobiles and steel — significant employers in Ontario — as well as aluminum, pharmaceuticals, lumber, and semiconductors. All those sectors in Canada are either already grappling with significant American tariffs imposed under Trump, or face the possibility of higher duties to export to the U.S. The U.S. also kept 50-per-cent tariffs on steel and aluminum in recent agreements on trade with the European Union and Japan, the same level imposed on the Canadian sectors earlier this year. Asked whether a deal is possible without tariffs on those sectors, Carney said that the United State's 'revealed approach' is to keep some level of import duties in those areas. 'In any broader deal, there are gives and takes, and there's various factors,' Carney said Wednesday. 'But I think we have to recognize that, in the strategic sectors — again, as defined by the United States: what's strategic to them — that they have tariffs.' The head of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, Catherine Cobden, told the Star this week that her sector will push for stronger Canadian counter-tariffs to match Trump's import duties on steel and aluminum if no deal is reached before Friday. Flavio Volpe, the president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association, said he wants tariffs on his sector reduced to zero, citing how the industry is highly integrated across the Canada-U.S. border. Meanwhile, in Washington Wednesday, cabinet minister Dominic LeBlanc was among the senior government officials who travelled to the U.S. capital in search of a deal before Friday. That's when Trump has threatened to increase tariffs on Canadian goods to 35 per cent, as part of his global policy to raise import duties to increase economic activity in the U.S. and promote sectors the White House deems essential to national security. Another example came Wednesday when Trump released a proclamation that made official his previous threat to impose 50 per cent tariffs on imported copper products. The proclamation said the tariffs will kick in just after midnight Friday morning. Trump has also threatened tariffs on pharmaceutical imports that could go as high as 200 per cent. Ahead of Friday's deadline, Canadian business groups and Ontario's envoy to Washington have said Canada must preserve the exemption to Trump's tariffs for goods that comply with 2018's Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). That exemption, in place since March 7, means roughly 86 per cent of Canadian exports to the U.S. could continue to flow tariff-free, according to an estimate from RBC Economics . Error! Ethereum's Ultrasound Money Moment: Why 2025 Is the Year ETH Takes Off
It all started with a single white paper. Back in 2013, Canadian programmer Vitalik Buterin was fascinated by Bitcoin's (BTC) rise. It represented something revolutionary – the first true digital currency with no backing or 'intrinsic value.' However, Buterin spotted a massive gap in the puzzle. Sure, Bitcoin was a fast-rising currency that was shaking up the entire financial world. But there was no infrastructure for people to build the applications we needed – software that could power things like contracts, basic transactions, and much more. That white paper? It described Buterin's vision for the next step in crypto's evolution: Ethereum. You can read the whole thing here. What he outlined was nothing short of revolutionary. Ethereum would represent the base layer of the new internet economy — programmable, yield-bearing, and upgradeable. A complete financial operating system that would connect the disparate outposts in crypto's Wild West-like expansion. In 2015, the Ethereum blockchain went live with Ether (ETH) as its central currency. And over the last 9 years, we've watched Ethereum evolve from an abstract concept to one of crypto's biggest success stories. One Coin to Rule Them All Today, Ether is the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap. It trails only Bitcoin. But unlike Bitcoin, ETH's use goes way beyond simple currency. Nearly every crypto platform, decentralized app, and smart contract runs on Ethereum. Here's a staggering number: As of May 2023, 158 out of the top 200 tokens by market cap live on the Ethereum blockchain. That means Ethereum powers over 75% of all cryptos – from stablecoins and DeFi apps to tokenized assets. This puts Ethereum in a unique position. The blockchain is called the 'fuel' of the digital asset space for good reason – nearly everything crypto-related runs on it. And that powerful reach isn't going unnoticed by institutional traders. Right now, one of Silicon Valley's most legendary contrarian investors is making his biggest bet yet on ETH's breakout. And I want to make sure everyone reading this can get into position as the smart money builds a stake in the next wave of crypto adoption. I've already helped my own readers discover the best crypto investing opportunities right as institutional money starts pouring in. This year alone, we've locked in gains as high as 58% trading Bitcoin ETFs. And I'm watching a whole range of other picks – including Ethereum ETFs and much more – set to benefit from the serious momentum building in cryptos in 2025. Now, I want to give you the full story behind Ethereum's big moment. But first, we need to understand the revolutionary concept that makes Ethereum fundamentally different from every other form of money out there. Sound Money Vs. Ultrasound Money Most currencies fall into two camps – sound and ultrasound. Sound money simply holds its value like gold. When we say a currency is sound, we mean it maintains a fixed or predictable supply. Bitcoin is the perfect example. It has a fixed supply of 21 million coins. That scarcity drives its value as 'digital gold.' ETH works completely differently. This is where ultrasound money comes in. Instead of maintaining a fixed supply, ultrasound money actually shrinks over time. It might sound odd at first, but the mechanics make perfect sense once you understand how Ethereum truly works. The Merge: How Ethereum Became Deflationary On September 15, 2022, Ethereum launched its biggest upgrade ever: the Merge. This wasn't just a technical tweak – it completely reimagined how the network operates. The Merge moved Ethereum from a Proof-of-Work (PoW) model to a more efficient Proof-of-Stake (PoS) system. Bitcoin itself operates on this PoW model. That means miners compete to solve complex mathematical puzzles to validate transactions and add new blocks to the blockchain. Miners are then rewarded with newly minted bitcoins for their efforts. Under PoS, though, the situation changes drastically. Validators (rather than miners) are selected based on the amount of cryptocurrency they hold. They then 'stake' it in the network to validate transactions and create new blocks. Here's the game-changing part for investors… Even before the Merge, Ethereum had a unique feature built into its code – the network burned a portion of transaction fees. That meant the total supply would decrease based on activity. This is why ETH investors started calling it 'ultrasound money.' It was becoming scarcer over time by design. The Merge simply supercharged this scarcity mechanism. Since the Merge, ETH's total supply has been shrinking at about 0.29% per year. So while Bitcoin's supply is fixed, Ethereum's supply actively shrinks and becomes more valuable as network usage climbs. The Merge created the perfect conditions for ETH's massive rise over the last few years. And now we're seeing a dynamic shift between ETH and Bitcoin that could signal a major supply-side breakout for Ethereum in 2025. Ethereum Vs. Bitcoin: 2025 's Biggest Investment Opportunity Ethereum's rise over the last year has been incredible. One of the most traded cryptos on the planet is up 65% over the past 30 days – that's over 159% since its April lows. And it's significantly outpacing Bitcoin in the same period. Historically, Bitcoin and Ethereum moved together. But while we've seen some divergences before, the gap between them is widening – and it's signaling something huge. Here's how the chart works: The ratio divides the price of Ether by the price of Bitcoin. So what we're seeing here is how much Bitcoin it takes to buy 1 Ether. When the ratio rises, it means Ether is outperforming Bitcoin. When it sinks, Ether is underperforming. Looking back, Ether hit several major peaks throughout 2023 and 2024. And it's starting to happen again. Right now, the ratio is flashing a strong bullish signal. The ratio recently closed above the key 0.039 resistance level. And it's holding firmly above the 21-week exponential moving average. For anyone who's interested in going deeper, I actually took a closer look at the ETH vs. BTC divergence in a recent episode of my daily podcast Masters in Trading LIVE. You can watch my full analysis below. Now the move we're seeing right now isn't random. It's a sign of real institutional backing moving the needle on ETH. And the source of that big move? It all comes down to one major catalyst most investors don't even know about. The Peter Thiel Factor Wall Street strategist Tom Lee was recently named chairman of Bitcoin miner BitMine Immersion Technologies (BMNR). This is the same company that just revealed a $250 million private placement specifically to build an Ethereum treasury. Now, that alone would ensure BitMine has one of the largest corporate Ethereum positions on record. But the bigger story is the mega investor pulling the strings behind the scenes – Peter Thiel. Some of you may already be familiar with that name. This is the same contrarian investor who helped launch PayPal, provided Facebook's first major investment, and co-founded Palantir. Thiel has a knack for spotting big changes in the game before the rest of the world even realizes the rules are still being written. So when he places a bet this big, the smart money tends to pay attention. BitMine Immersion now holds approximately $1 billion worth of ETH. And Thiel's 9.1% stake in this project reveals one key takeaway… This isn't speculation. This is institutional validation at the highest level. And it's all happening right as Ethereum goes mainstream … Ethereum ETFs are gaining massive momentum as the digital asset space continues its historic climb. Rising stablecoin adoption is also creating another powerful tailwind. As I mentioned, stablecoins rely heavily on Ethereum's infrastructure. The same goes for traditional financial institutions getting digital asset exposure. Major banks and financial companies are increasingly using Ethereum's network for custody and cross-border payments. And just like BitMine, we're also seeing more corporate treasuries rotate into ETH. They're simply positioning ahead of broader Wall Street adoption. Companies are realizing that holding ETH isn't just about crypto exposure. It's about owning a piece of the infrastructure powering the future of finance. Ethereum is connecting legacy financial institutions with the new programmable money layer of the internet that's being built in real-time. And now this major institutional shift into ETH is setting off a whole tidal wave of opportunities for early investors. So what comes next from here? Why ETH Is Set to Break Out in 2025 There's a slow-burning problem in the global financial system—and it's getting harder to ignore. The U.S. national debt has surged to nearly $36 trillion, climbing at a pace that even seasoned economists are calling unsustainable. At the same time, the value of the dollar is under increasing pressure. It's not collapsing—but it's quietly eroding. Meanwhile, central banks are trapped. They want to cut interest rates to stimulate growth, but every time they ease up, inflation threatens to flare back up. It's a lose-lose scenario: keep rates high and strangle the economy, or cut them and risk another wave of rising prices. The result? Inflation isn't going away. It's proving far more stubborn than most expected — and that has huge implications for investors. That means investors and institutions are actively on the hunt for alternative stores of value that can also generate yield. This is where Ethereum's unique properties become very appealing. ETH offers something no other asset can match. Sound money principles + yield generation + platform utility. It's truly unmatched in the digital asset economy. And it's increasingly competitive with traditional financial instruments. Think of the relationship between Ethereum and Bitcoin like the historical relationship between silver and gold. Ethereum is rapidly becoming the 'digital silver' to Bitcoin's 'digital gold' – but with superior growth and utility as the crypto adoption wave intensifies. Right now, the market cap ratio still generally favors Bitcoin at roughly 15:1. But that dynamic could change dramatically over the next 12 months. The biggest catalysts for ETH — more ETF approvals on the way, treasury adoption, and institutional rotation — are still playing out as I write to you. And the real move is still ahead of us. ETH Volatility on Sale: Why Now Is the Moment to Act Now here's the opportunity that excites me most. The smart money is pricing in cheap volatility for cryptos. And right now, we can use this cheap volatility to our advantage. Think of it as a launching point to get into position well ahead of any potential moves. I'm happy to say that I've been helping my viewers get into position right as this wave takes off. I'm talking about exposure to the best leveraged ETH ETFs out there. Even direct exposure to the asset itself. It's a great time to start building positions as the next wave of crypto adoption takes shape. But the window of opportunity is narrowing. Soon, we'll see even more major ETF approvals that bring billions in institutional capital. We'll witness a flood of traditional financial institutions integrating Ethereum into their operations. We'll watch as ETH reclaims price leadership over Bitcoin and potentially reaches new all-time highs. I'm here to tell you one thing… Before all of these catalysts fully play out, there's still time to position yourself. The Peter Thiel bet isn't just about one investor's conviction. It's a signal that the smartest money in Silicon Valley recognizes Ethereum's big moment. Now is the time to position yourself. Before more ETFs launch, before institutions flood in, and before ETH definitively reclaims leadership in the digital asset space. Just click here to find out all about the winning strategy I've been using to capture crypto's biggest profit opportunities. I'll give you the tools you need to spot the big bets institutional traders are placing on cryptos like ETH right now. And I'll show you exactly what it takes to trade just like the pros in mere days. The ultrasound money revolution is happening right now. The question is whether you'll be part of it.
